RUN NO. 2292 DIPLO 24JUL2012

RUN NO. 2292
DATE: 24 JUL 2012
SITE: DIPLO
HARES: ALISON/SUE

Well it was an eventful night for a non-event. We all arrived at the trusty old Diplo site ready to set off. Hannah got blessed with the front horn, and her virginal front horm blower status would never be the same again! Young Nicky was given the back horn, and although less virginal in her experience, still entusiastic was she. So we were off, and made a quick turn left, coming in the way we usually go out. It was great! We all stumble across Glamour warning us of an impending check, and we very quickly discovered she was right!!!! Fancy that. First check. So off we disperse like little energetic ever ready bunnies, scurrying through the jungle seeking the bright beacon of the thin white paper trail we had lost. The back horn caught up with the check, as did everyone else of course, and we looked, and looked and looked. Finally after much searching there was a very distance cal that possibly sounded like “ooooon paaaaaaper....” we ran after the distant sound, caught the caller and charged ahead once more. The paper found was long! It was bright white! It followed a trail, all we needed to start charging ahead through the Borneo jungle once more!

However as the paper got thinner and thinner we started mumbling about how “old” the paper looked. How this paper was not entirely “fresh” in fact we soon discovered it was indeed used goods from a hash gone by and we were lead up the garden path without a paddle! Back to check one we all went. The search continued, however at 6:00pm the skies looked dim and the time ahead looked long, so the call was made to abandon the hash and return to where it all started for the good old Shout Out! We had plenty to celebrate, the one person who had in fact completed the hash that evening was the hare of the night, Alison. The run just happened to be her 1000th run so big congrats for that achievemnt and she was joined by Glamour in the celebrations as Glamour completed her 1,100th run! Amazing feats. Followed by amazing feasts. Thanks to Alison and Sue for laying the hash and stumping us all, and all the ladies for doing what they do best.

Next weeks hash is at Subok 339, and the Shout Out address is to be adviced but will be very close to the hash. See you all there!!!

RUN NO. 2291 DADAP - 17 JUL 2012

RUN NO. 2291
DATE: 17 JULY
SITE: DADAP
HARES: PEEWEE/TRAILBLAZER/SUE-ANNE
FRONT HORN: Madmarg  BACK HORN: Squeak

It was looking like this week’s hash would be a repeat of last week with pouring rain most of Monday night and all Tuesday morning, but luckily the skies had brightened a little by 5.15. On Monday night I got a text from my co-hare to say she had been down with something-itis since Saturday and wouldn’t make the hash. With the GM also away, having a great time in Puerto Galera, it looked like I was a one woman band tonight – run the shout up, write the words for next week and collect the signs. A text came from our hare, Trailblazer to say “first check paper is timetable” (why is it the last 2 weeks’ hares have had difficulty using the YELLOW paper they were given for first check?) and “enjoy the waters”, which could have meant enjoy the beautiful waterfall vistas or have fun wading through thigh deep, swollen rivers! Only time would tell.

The horn sounded on the dot of 5.15 and about 15 runners ventured into the jungle. We turned right off the road up a clay trail where someone had been busy cutting the long grass, to make easy going for all of us hens. We soon emerged onto open terrain, where I met Glamour on her way back. She said she didn’t get to first check, so it must have been a good way in. We passed through a bamboo grove and the trail had lots of very big dried leaves and trippy bits for quite a while.

Clearly these English teachers don’t know left from right. Just behind me I hear the call “Thorns on the right” (Squeak), followed shortly by “You mean left” (Rozi)! First check was found quickly and was called through with a rather strangled sounding horn. Soon after, I thought somebody had had a serious fall, not far behind me, but it turned out to be a tree crashing onto the track and down a nearby bank – luckily, no one was hurt.

After a very slippery, tricky descent off a ridge, we get to our first stream. Up the other side, Linzi tries a bit of stunt work, hanging from a tree limb when she slipped. We then headed on right to another wee ridge with streams on both sides. This then led down a very treacherous slope to our first waterfall. Along a bit further, we come to a rope to help us down a much gentler slope – I was thinking, why didn’t they put that rope further back, where I had much more trouble scrambling down in the slippery conditions?

Soon we came to another longer, gently sloping waterfall, where Linzi and I stopped for a much needed rest, while the whereabouts of the on paper for second check was found – well I needed a rest, even if my much younger, fitter niece didn’t. After that, the trails seemed easier going, although Linzi managed to nearly disappear in deep water on one of the river crossings. Much of the rest remains a blur to me, trying to keep up with my co-hen, There were a few more river crossings, more bamboo and another beautiful waterfall. It was a good workout for me, but I was pleased to be out. Thank you hares, for a very scenic run.

Then time for the shout up and I find out we have not only a virgin hare but a virgin hasher all in one (Trailblazer’s daughter, Sue-Anne). “She made me come”, she says. Anyway, thanks for helping out – we hope you enjoyed it. My fellow hens were kind to me this week, compared to the noisy rabble of last week’s shout up, so running the proceedings was a cinch. Satu Lagi informed us she would be away for the next month, so any hares needed to text  or email  her to confirm the on site for the tent in plenty of time. Erin said to make sure the words were sent to henswords and not Anna’s email address, otherwise she would not get them. Thanks for coming to the fore and doing a great job of the words.
Then came calls for the hashit. Karlene was expecting to get her dues for carelessly leaving her hash shoes behind at Serasa. During the shout up, another contender emerged, when a mobile phone was heard ringing the guilty verdict before the owner even had a chance to defend herself – aka Mad Marg. With both the previous hashit holders (Hash Hound & Sarah) in absentia, a large bottle of water was found to do the deed. It was very well taken by both hens and Karlene, who had stripped down to the bare minimum, even took great delight when she found it was warm water and proceeded to take a shower. It was soon time for makan and we all enjoyed the great varieties of food brought by everyone. The only glitch – Mad Marg forgot to bring the plates from last week. Not a problem. All and sundry quickly found a serviette, piece of foil, lid or container to help out and eating that wonderful pasta of Pee Wee’s with our hands didn’t matter a bit. All in all, another great night.

On on, Sue

RUN NO. 2290 - DIPLO - 10JUL2012

RUN NO.2290
DATE: 10 JUL 2012
SITE: DIPLO (A TO B)
HARES: Fertile Myrtle/Madmarg/Legally Blonde
FRONT HORN: Satu Lagi  BACK HORN: Sue

Oh…. how we wish we could stay dry every Tuesday – weather wise that is and not related to blues or greens. I had every intention of doing so last week on the wettest Tuesday we have seen in months and planned to assist Smurf with the very important little jobs around the tent ~ happy thoughts. But my plans were quickly squashed by the JMs who kindly volunteered me as front horn. And when I thought it couldn’t get worse, we were also warned of “creepy crawlies” about. Thankfully ones to collect for prizes. There’s a good incentive…here we go… another wet run, just make sure no one tells my Mum what I really do at the hash!

Seven of us brave hashers were waved off by the ones who chose to stay dry or more the ones not chosen as the rain gods’ sacrifice. My earlier fears of hashing in the rain were made worse by the state of the paper which looked liked they were laid two months ago. Even Mad Marg’s paper in the bushes did not fare well.
Up the top ridge we went. Too wet to run so we stay together and by the time Kathryn was greeted by a baby croc on a log , there was only five of us left – moi, Kathryn, Hana, JM Sue and her niece Linzi – why on the wettest of runs there is always a brave guest – Anna Morley will never forget her first run at Subok. Come to think of it I always find myself on the wettest ones! True hashers get wet – fair weather hashers smartly stay dry – some in more ways than others!
Here’s a bad joke:

Q: What do pantyliners and fair weather hashers have in common?

A: Both stay dry and odor-free on active wet days
Further we go and we come across a drenched first check guarded by a mighty green frog who becomes Hana’s companion. Back check found by Sue and we trundged up a side slope. A familiar up trail we turned left and eventulally we’re back on the original main trail – sneaky one hares and a handy detour had it not been raining crocs and frogs!

On we go, ever further from the tent - which is probably now filling up with more dry hashers exchanging laughs, probably having some nuts and some even sneaking in an early green or blue or two. Meanwhile where they were supposed to be, we get to a T and we turn right to go further into the depths of Diplo. We take a left turn and meet a mighy big ugly spider. He’s way too scary to ride with me so Hana kindly takes him. And we also find 2nd check. True hashers Hana and Kathryn go forward and Sue goes back to find the on paper again.

We have a croc, frog and spider and we now waiting for a snake or Gruffalo to appear. Instead its another spider claimed by Linzi. And we also get to the final check. Kathryn and Hana go bounding back down a trail behind and I go on ahead finding a baby dino on the way – have we reached Jurrasic Diplo?! I go up a very steep hill and find the paper – ON, ON, ON, ON, ON PAPER.

Kathryn asked me if I could smell “the dump” which had me confused for a few seconds! But in this case THE dump was a good smell to have as we were getting closer to the out. Rumour was that this was an A to B and we were getting closer to B.

The trails started looking familiar and fresh paper started appearing – thank you lovely hares. Up past a fallen tree and I knew were were 5 mins from the out and true enough we get to the opening and out at the water towers but without first jumping when we saw the snake on the log! WE MADE IT and it was still light!!! And despite the rain it was actually SO FUN (esp for you M.S). 

Ride back on the roomy bus back to the tent – probably the only good thing there was only 5 of us on the run! Quick change and we have the shout-up. Down-down to the hares, Mad Marg, Fertile Myrtle and Legally Blonde. Followed by a farewell to Fertile Myrtle who is returning to New Zealand and leaves us after 178 runs and that’s with four pregnancies thrown in! Also hash welcome to JM Sue’s niece Linzi.

Thanks to hares for refreshments and to Fertile Myrtle for hummous and the best vegetable curry. And Mad Margz’s chocolate fudge cake is always a treat that even a non-hasher was trying to sneak a bite!

Now time for the hardcore to get comfortable and and exchange epic tales from our youth. And a good night it was especially with stories inspired by “Fifty Shades of Grey”. Now haven’t I got you all perked up and wishing you sometimes stayed later?!
On On…

RUN NO.2289 JLN BERAKAS 3 JUL 2012

RUN NO. 2289
DATE: 3 JULY 2012
SITE: JLN BERAKAS
HARES: Briony/Psycho/Rozi + (mismanagement)

Front Horn: Fertile Myrtle; but not needed as there were no horns and she didn’t find the only check anyway

Back Horn: ?

After arriving at the Hash site to find it had been moved due to a jungle fire I followed Sid and Gung ho onto Briony’s house. Very impressed there was a hash at all, we prepared to run who knows where.
The horn went, or someone said lets go (as the horns were left at home due to the last minute hash site change) and off we went down the road. I expected to head into the jungle to the left but no headed right down the road. I was running with a visiting squash coach (Jaz), who was here for activities week with JIS. It was a real shame she missed getting into the beautiful jungle, but she didn’t seem to mind at all.
The run went down the road, next to the motorway, in through an industrial estate and back along the road/ Simpang back to Briony’s.
The committee were adamant there was a check but since focus and concentration are not my most valued traits I went off paper and followed the road home (making Madam Sin’s back breaking stone placing effort a complete waste of time). Apparently where we were to turn was well marked, and it may very well have been, but I’m not so sharp at noticing things like turns on runs, so I added some extra hills and distance to my run.

All in all it was great to get out and do a run and well done to the hares and committee for putting together a very last minute run. It was Gung ho’s last run and she received an award for (this time) completing 100 runs. There were quite a few guests, and I think everyone had a lovely evening. The Afghan food was beautiful, thank you so much I really enjoyed it.

I would just like to say thank you for all the wonderful hash’s, I will really miss hash and the jungle, it’s my final hash, so I hope you enjoy my last run and have a great night. ON ON!

RUN NO. 2288-DIPLO 26 JUN 2012

RUN NO. 2288
DATE: 26 JUN 2012
SITE: DIPLO
HARES: Alison/Sue/Cheryl
FRONT HORN: Hash Hound   BACK HORN: Mani Mouse

It was a good day for a run, it didn’t rain, perhaps dry feet by the end?

We got there nice and early, I even had time to empty out the girls before heading into the jungle. While waiting for the horn to go off, there was a hubbub of stinging insects on the ridge path of the run. Murmurs of concern were going through the group. Just before the horn was about to blow, the formal announcement was raised by Hash Cash and Satu Lagi that the hares sent words that while laying the run they got stung after second check, no idea what the stinging insects might be, there is a short cut we could all take to avoid the stinging insects and a sigh of relief went through the group.
Hash Hound took the front horn and Mani Mouse took back. The horn blew and we all ran in and turned left, only to realized paper was on the right. Oops. Down down down the hill, not ten minutes into the run we already had to live with wet socks and shoes thanks to the stream we had to cross by wading in it. Lots of ups and downs and all around the hillocks of Diplo, a call of checking rang through the trees.

People went everywhere looking for the on paper, some went deeper, some went up, some went back, and some stayed put, catching our breath and a drink and hopefully someone will shout ‘On paper!’ and we could continue.

Five minutes went by, nothing. Ten minutes went by, nothing. Caught fragments of conversations like, ‘Where’s the horn?’ and ‘It’s a committee run, it’s expected the hares would be sneaky’ and ‘How long do we wait before we give up and turn back?’ (Ok, that was me, a question asked out of curiosity) The front runners with energizer like bunny energy ran back and forth – and they found nothing.

It was quarter to six when the shout came through. We walked, marched and ran. No clue who found first check and who found the on paper and can’t remember what the terrain was like on the way to second check. Don’t know who found second check either and who found the on paper as we all went zooming through.

Until we reached another stream to cross… this part I remember, Call Girl went all athletic and did the long jump and landed with dry feet on the other side of the bank, where as those of us with vertically challenged lower appendages had to wade through the water - again.

Probably more hills and the thought of where the hell is the supposed short cut ran through our minds, and when trudging uphill, all of the sudden there was a white sheet of paper that says, ‘Short cut this way, turn left!’ Yay!! Legally Blond who was in front of me was all gung ho and turned right! Gasp! A brave soul that one.

On the short cut trail the hares left a helpful message of ‘OUT’ and arrows pointing the way. I don’t know about you but it was a very long short cut. Oxymoron somewhere…

Back at the tent, seemed like everybody decided to take the short cut, and you could see Madam Sin was ready with the first aid box, just in case.

And after signing out we get to collect presents. Lovely large umbrellas with the H3 logo printed on.

At shout up, prizes were given out for laying the most runs to Mad Marg and Sarong, Trail Blazer and Satu Lagi came in second. Ryvita and Squeak respectively got prizes for being front horn and back horn the most.

There was a man by the name of Martin in the midst who supplied cool 70’s and 80’s music throughout the night, so he was excused for being present. I heard some girls only left at midnight from boogie-ing in the jungle. A big thank you to the committee for the yummy food, prizes and gifts. And Sue told a joke that got everyone rolling on the floor laughing, that’s a ROFL for the night.

RUN NO. 2287
DATE: 19 JUN 2012
SITE: SERASA
HARES: Possum/Satu Lagi

The hash was saved by the good deeds of our trusty hares, always willing to volunteer and help out when needed. – thank you. The hens gathered on a lovely fine day at Serasa Yacht club and although there were to be no checks, Call Girl and Nicki stepped up to be horns for the evening. I can’t say exactly where the paper led everyone, because Cheryl and myself chose to walk straight up to the end of the spit and back. We saw a few bits of paper along the way, but were too busy talking to notice. The steady wind made it very refreshing. We met Sticky Rice on the way back doing a second circuit – well done you!

Possum put out nibbles for all when we got back and quite a few cooled off in the pool. There were several down downs for people after the hares were thanked. First time guest, Amanda, a veteran hasher from the Korean hash, was taking time out to explore hashing in other parts. Duchess celebrated her 1200th run, very pleased with herself that she could have a Tiger because Glamour was driver for the night. Gloria was farewelled after only 17 runs. She is heading back to Peru for a while, but since this was her third time in Brunei, we might well see her back again sometime. The June birthdays were celebrated with the usual cupcakes. The hashit was given to Gloria for signing in and out at the same time. The shout up ended with a great joke from Dizzy. Thank you hares for the delicious chicken, tofu and rice.

RUN NO. 2286
DATE: 12 JUN 2012
SITE: TUNGKU BEACH
HARES: Never Wrong/Debra
FRONT HORN: Hash Hound  BACK HORN: Sue

After the sad loss of yet another of our beautiful hash sites the hares, Never Wrong and Debbie, moved the run from DST to Tungku Beach, for an exercise of the Achilles tendons on sand. A little bumpy on the way to the site which I believed scared a couple of runners off, but the ‘Beast’ made it and didn’t get stuck in mud or sand so all was well.  Our numbers were depleted by some dressed-up dry affair. Off the small husk of bunnies went in chase of the hares into the sandy walkways.  Mostly dry but a few calf-high ponds to encounter. No nasty hills to slow the front runners down but they did make good going on the dry sand.

Hornies Yvette and Sue took care of the pack and an enjoyable run brought walkers and runners happy and contented back to the On On site. There were no first time guests or returners, announcements or awards to shorten the proceedings. Although the hashit was aired, no one got wet, that is except the swimming bunnies. The hares provided healthy, tasty and filling nourishment, Thank You hares, and a few down downs were had to quench the thirst.  So again, a good night in the H3 world was had.

RUN NO. 2285 MENTERI LINK 5JUN2012

RUN NO. 2285
DATE: 5 JUN 2012
SITE: MENTERI LINK
HARES: GI JANE/HOTLIPS

The Tale of the great Mentiri water pipes run and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (QDJ) Shout Up
GI Jane and Hot Lips outdid themselves setting this week’s hash trail.  Well done ladies.  We are much obliged.  What a lush bit of jungle it was too.  Too bad it was nearly all uphill, eh?  Or so it seemed.  It was a cracker!  Simply sublime in terms of vegetative cover, couldn’t get enough of the place.  With four checks, they kept us on our toes, or shall I say more correctly, the three clever lasses who found the paper on each occasion (well done Boel for finding the first check, Yann for finding number two (a sneaky back check it was too) and Carol who found checks three and four, you clever girl!).  I found myself wondering whether the Queen might have found a check had she been alongside us.  She’s one cracking lass you know, so I wouldn’t put it past her.  In fact, I wouldn’t put anything past her, she is one right top lass.  Fertile Myrtle found the dog lead Cheryl asked us to watch out for, right at the top of the last hill before we exited the jungle and after a dozen gals strode right past it.  Isn’t it funny how sometimes others see things you can’t?  I say it’s her highly honed ‘mom radar’ that shone through, what with those four boys to keep her on her toes and in a perpetual state of high alert.  We’re gonna miss ya gal.

Alas, before you knew it, everyone was roadside signing back in and gulping back H20 and 100in anticipation of the evening’s festivities just up the road at Karen’s place because tonight was the big night to pay homage to Her Royal Majesty, the Queen of England, that’s right, Elizabeth II who has been on that throne now for 60 years.  Congratulations yourRoyal Highness and many happy returns of the day to you!  Imagine that, putting up with Phillip for, er I mean overseeing her queendom all those years (don’t go getting all PC now Deb, alright I won’t just, I’ll stop it right now). That reminds me, once when speaking on British food, the Prince remarked, “British food is something like a small child. When it’s good it’s very, very good; when it’s bad, it’s absolutely awful”.Positively smashing SOH on that chap, just smashing, oh and we’ll be having loads of the former and none of the latter food-wise tonight as you will soon see.  Though with news just in, we all wish the Prince well as he is in hospital, poor chap, well not poor exactly, but you know what I mean.  Gee, English can be a rather tricky language at times, as we found out a bit later on the night in the A-Z quiz, but I am getting ahead of myself.

Anyhoosers, there we were fresh out of the jungle and in just minutes we were down the road for the big shebang shout up at Hot Lip’s place (thank you hostess with the moistest!) and being greeted with a lurvely cocktail and all too.It went straight to our heads so we staggered to our chairs (proudly bearing our posh goody bags filled with nice prezzies, thanks Amanda and all you other lovely gals involved in providing that treat) and sought a good view of that table full of yummy scrumpdillyiciousfood that so many nice ladies worked tirelessly to prepare for our grateful tummies.  Yum-yum and another yum, and another rum or was it gin, or I forget, is someone getting sozzled already, they just gots here and already Bettina is Kathryn? – oh dear!%$#!.  Sober up darlin’, right, now where was I?  Oh yeah, it was hard to concentrate once we were called to order, what with all that food right behind the speakers, and all those sparkly outfits.
There sure were some glam outfits on the night.  Bling galore too, some of us were positively blinded by the bling.  It was hard to believe any of these gals had just been hashing a mere few minutes beforehand.  Jan was truly royal in red, Nicky so regal in blue and Clare in the sparkliest patriotic number of all.  Simply gorgeous ladies.  There were more tiaras than you could shake a stick at too, it were one posh do alright.

The dress competition is certainly hotting up at these themed shout ups or haven’t you noticed?Brilliant to behold.Oh and there was marvelous classy British music playing in the background and we could enjoy the wonderful themed decorations including fancy napkins and a near life size portrait of the Queen surrounded by Union Jacks (though technically they are only called Union Jacks when flown aboard ships – yes ma’am).

So there was the lovely Amanda handing out the keepsake white FCO tote bags with a right jolly big UK flag on them complements of Sunny and the British High Comm (thanks so much!), with such nice goodies inside including a red, white and blue lollipop and a fancy schmancyboxed mug commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  Cool logo on it and all.  Just terrific.Thank you, thank you, thank you to all you generous and kindhearted ladies who donated to the kitty to have those made.  We shall enjoy those for many moons to come and toast to your good health each time, we promise.  Bottoms up.

There were prizes and more prizes too.  Those lucky gals who won were thrilled beyond measure.  Eastern Promise, who also looked ab fab on the night,  hit pay dirt by winning a Hello magazine.  It couldn’t have gone to anyone more ecstatic.   Some lucky ducks got a second QDJ mug.  There was even a clever A-Z quiz from Smurf who managed to drag out of us the most obscure royal connections for each letter going.  We learned what a dorgi (a cross between a corgi and dachshund, a special breed created only by the Queen) and a zaza (herfavourite daily tipple).  Things started to get a bit funny when  ‘Y’ was for“Yorkshire pudding”?!  I’m not sure how much Yorkshire Pudding her Majesty ingests each year, but I’ll bet it’s not a lot what with all that swan on her plate and all.  Why that Y word I wondered, why indeed.  Oh and we had to move swiftly along at F, because some gals only know one word that begins with the letter ‘F’ and they sure seem to like to shout it out a lot, like at the top of their lungs.  (What would the neighbours think?)  Then there was C for Charles, but no one said Camilla, which was only right and proper since this was the Queen’s nightanyhoosers.  Oh, a zaza is made of Dubonnet and gin (which was created to ward off malaria for French Foreign Legionnaires in N. Africa – you read it here first) and a favourite of her mum’s and Queen Victoria’s as well apparently, who knew?).  Well done all around for all the brilliant A-Z terms called out on the night.  What clever lot of lasses to be sure.

There weren’t too many announcement, but Sunny reminded all Brits of the Street Party (picnic/garden party) taking place on the 16th at the High Comm’s residence in Kota Batu for which one needs to send an expression of interest to the email address on the FCO website (and have it acknowledged presumably) to attend.  So maybe it will be round two, or even three, there in terms of the QDJ for some of the ladies.  Then Carolyn invited everyone round to hers for lunch on Friday the 15th at midday.  Lovely, much obliged.
After the fun prize draw and quiz were over it was time to tuck I and jolly fine fest it was too.  There were gourmet salads, fingers sandwiches, mini homemade quiches, coronation chicken, little sausages, liver pate (as reported by the carnivores anyhoosers, not this veggie) and water crackers, homemade scones with jam and cream, tasty trifle and Delia’s whisky cake (ok, so I took some liberties with the recipe and trebled the amount of liquid ingredients called for – oops!).  It was all terribly British, or shall I say, incredibly tasty, delectably fine fare, it was more than that, it was very, very good indeed.  Positively delectable.  Rah-ther!  So GI Jane, Hotlips, Amanda, Smurf, Sunny and all the rest of you lot in the UK

posse, thank you ever so much for all your terrific organisational skills, all your hard work, being all around wonderful gals and for the absolutely S-P-L-E-N-D-I-D (read with a posh British accent please) evening that washad by all that was definitely fit for a queen.  We’ll all get to run off some of those extra calories at the next hash which is at Tungku Beach.  Be there or don’t be a beach babe.  Later dudettes.

RUN NO. 2284 DIPLO 29 MAY 12

RUN NO. 2284
DATE: 29 MAY 2012
SITE: DIPLO
HARES: SARONG/TRAILBLAZER/ZUR
Front Horn – Satu Lagi

Back Horn – Squeak
How refreshing for me to recollect with a clear head the events of last night, as thanks to Daughter no 2’s French exam I left the hash site early to conjugate verbs and split infinitives, which makes a change from the splitting headache my poor body has become accustomed to on a Wednesday morning.

At the sound of the horn, the front runners sprinted off, with Satu Lagi ably hooting all the way as we all sallied forth wondering what might befall us in the delicious deepness of Diplo. The odd flash of cerise and turquoise lycra contrasted with the many hues of green and brown which we would have paid more attention to had we known that Sarong’s alter ego, Dr Irene, was going to set us a horticultural challenge at the shout up!

We soon came to first check, which turned out to be a back check and was found in short order by Melissa, I think, possibly due to a rogue strip of yellow paper along the trail which gave a lucky clue.

Although I always imagine I am going around in circles at Diplo, we seemed to be following some newly cut paths which were a little arduous for the taller hashers due to low hanging gnarly branches which appeared too serpent like for comfort in the half light of the Bruneian evening. However, one of the more vertically challenged amongst us, Satu Lagi, ended up to her waist in muddy water whilst negotiating a stream but resolutely held her horn above the water and hashed onwards, whilst the community spirited Mad Margz quickly rerouted the trail for the rest of us so that we could avoid the same fate.

There was another near shocking incident as we were gingerly crossing a very slippery log above a murky stream, no doubt populated with several nasty killing creatures. One of the branches being used for balance above snapped and fell in to what suddenly seemed like a raging torrent below, leaving one lady hasher almost in need of smelling salts at the shock, although like a real trooper, she made it across and harried forth, as any good hasher does.

Second check was found with the normal efficiency one would expect from this fabulous bunch of hens and ultimately we came across the racing snakes that are Madam Sin and Smurf who, in the absence of Ryvita, had taken up the reins as front runners and, apparently, sprinted round once and come back in for all the stragglers, demonstrating an athletic prowess that most of us could not even aspire to.

The last path provided a nice opportunity to run out smoothly into the half light of Diplo, which Cheryl quite rightly said during the shout up should be re-named “Sarong” after all the runs the good Dr. has laid for us there.

The shout up was rather rowdy at times and as usual I was unfairly targeted by the JMs for the hashit as I did not speak a single word (a few sentences, but not a single word!) and Mad Margz came to my defence and deflected the JM’s challenge. I’ve always admired the kiwis….

There was one guest, a Brit and a friend of Sunny’s who arrived in Brunei a few months ago and two new hashers were inaugurated – Clare Reid and Sunny.

We celebrated Sarong’s incredible achievement of completing over 400 runs and she let us know that she will invest in a GPS device so we can look forward to ever more challenging runs!

Thereafter the rowdiest group of hashers attempted to sing “Come on Irene [sic]” (Dexy’s MR - which really gave their age away) and “I’ve got you Babe” - Sonny and Cher, surely they weren’t old enough to remember that one? Oops, I forgot I was one of them, and yes, they were old enough!

The delightful food of the evening was served by Dave, yes ladies, there was a man amongst us, and actually a mini-man as well because Django also put in a guest appearance (surely the coolest name in Brunei). The boys served the most delicious curry and although by that time it was dark and I couldn’t really see what I was eating, it tasted very yummy.
Thanks so much to Sarong ,Trailblazer and Zu for a very good run, and a memorable shout up with delicious curries.

RUN NO. 2283 LOWER DIPLO 22MAY2012

RUN NO.2283
DATE:  22 MAY 2012
SITE: LOWER DIPLO - Geriatrics and Caregivers Run
HARES: SID/G I JANE/GUNG HO

Leaving all trials and tribulations of the week behind us, we made our way to lower diplo following the well-placed signs for our next hash run in full anticipation of the challenges and thrills ahead. Cars parked at the road side, we all gathered in a rather private tent obscured by tall bushes, a short distance from the main road to be informed that there were two runs , a short geriatric trail marked by a sequence of loo roll papers and fresh long pieces of white paper for the more enthusiastic hashers who preferred the long forest trail. The front horn sounded and off we went armed only with our bare essentials. Signs galore warning "slippery footpaths" etc were aplenty.

We started off on the tarmac and followed a short run on the road to veer into a grassy path between a big ditch and someone’s house fence. A few minutes later the run split into two, the loo roll trail continued to the left on some comfortable tiled paths....understandably so and well thought of......and the longer trail followed a run through some bushes onto a main road. It was very tempting to follow the loo roll trail, but as hashers hungry for some real adventures we took the long forest trail constantly looking for long strips of paper left by the hares.

After another short run on the road, we took a steep descent into the beginning of the forest by treading onto soft slippery ground mostly covered by moist brown leaves. Then into the thick of of it all......long grass on either side of a gently upsloping path again covered with mainly moist brown leaves, requiring subtle balancing in order to avoid slipping into a fall!

The path then turned steeper, with more clearing on either side, not any less slippery than before. It then changed into what was to be a long steep uphill climb, which seemed to take forever. But it was worth it because at the top, we were invited to help ourselves to a token from a bowl full of tiny sweets strategically placed along the path. Yes that was a great boost after a hypoglycaemia-inducing climb. Then came a gentle downhill run, providing release for tired muscles ,a chance to catch our breaths and taking a few sips of water to quench our thirst from heavy sweating during the upward climb. We then found ourselves deep inside forestland, following paths up and down, surrounded by sounds and songs only the creatures of the forests could make. And dare we say it ? Did anyone notice the elves of the tropical rain forests shyly spying on us?

The cries for “checking” could be heard from some distance at various points during the run. Later there were a few streams of cold water and mud to cross .Through a lot of squelch!...splash!....ouch!..... we carried on our trail up and down some more hills.

After 5575 steps recorded on my pedometer and around 2.5 Km, we followed one last steep but short climb and made it through the exit filled with a huge breath of relief as we walked back to our tent where we were fussed over by a trio of geriatrics in long skirts and pinnies proudly flaunting their heavy bosoms. Oh my..........! Talking about bouncing like balloons!

Hard work done, we sat down for the on on. GM thanked the geriatrics trio that somehow managed to lay the hash run. Anyway, token prizes were collected by Sticky Rice ( incontinence diapers) and Nikki ( a soft cushion for piles). Debra won a special kind of underpants with a curious pocket at the mid-front, for correctly suggesting that the purpose of the little pocket is for storing condoms.

We were delighted by the presence of an ex-hasher’s daughter as our guest who had joined us for the run. Eastern Promise & Madmarg (and Dizzy who was still in China) were congratulated for their efforts at the Great Wall Marathon in Beijing the week before. A good event to "tick off" but no record to break due to number of participants.

For the hashits, we initially had three proposed candidates. There were two people noted to have forgotten to sign in and out and also our geriatric trio started the on on without realising that Sarong and Buster the hash dog had not returned to the hash tent. But the trio was spared their punishment as GM heard a text messaging tone on someone’s mobile phone going off and insisted that the person concerned declare herself. In the end, ridden with guilt our lovely Briony stood up to face the whoosh!.... of a bucket load of cold water! Then more announcements and a geriatric joke ensued before we all finally settled down to bread and pumpkin soup.

Well done hashers! Till the next run.....

On on!  Zur

HARES: MadMarg/Eastern Promise

The run was crazy man…found, lost, found, found, lost, found!!

Well what an exciting run that was…we arrived after searching for the Hash sign…some met in the middle of the road and had debates about where? When? how? We took off up a steep run, and off into the lovely Brunei jungle….soon the pack merged and the sounds of “checking” chorused out into the afternoon breezes. Could we find that b…. check? We hunted, we searched, we swore, we analysed, we held long confabs out of that dirty moonscape of mud…20 plus minutes later after Gi Jane, Sid and Squeak had already crossed the little river and bridge and had a good reccy, and then Satu Lagi found the on on paper to the left of the normal trail and we all took off! Past a new iban camp and some poor guys cooking their tea, then onto the road for a little road run and then back up into the forest for another long up…Second check found quickly and third check had them down in the creek and hunting again! Considerable chatter and dissection of run, as appropriate on the signout board… Sneaky laying girls!

Everyone out, great run. On on and Bollywood theme at Glamours for her 79th birthday.

Thank you’s to front horn Mrs Pingu, Squeak back horn.

First time guest Wilma, Scots via NZ. She even wore Indian clobber!

Notices from GI Jane (Music society do on Friday night) Lovely joke by Briony. Then the highlight, was a well taken heckled chapatti demo by Gopah using atta flour. Thanks to Sheila (Glamour’s daughter) and Glamour for the fine Indian food and posh setting.

Gals looked great in their fine clothes.. Glamour promised a big party for her 80 next year…watch this space!

DATE: 8 MAY 2012

HARES: MELISSA/RYVITA/HASHHOUND

It is usually raining when we hash here, so maybe tonight we will be lucky and it will stay dry!
I arrived to the hash and unloaded the hash shop etc. I  then parked my car; I thought I had a good parking space but Smurf suggested that I move my car, which I did. The horn was sounded and off the ladies went. I was a bit late going in, so teamed up with Sally to walk the hash tonight. Sally was recovering from her half marathon in Kota Kinabalu at the weekend in which she came 3rd and Marcela 9th in the 10km with Kathryn 8th. Well-done ladies. Back to the run. We followed paper that lead us to the steps heading up the hill, and then we got on a nice short trail before we had another hill to tackle which was a bit slippery going up.  We were on a good trail that lead us down the hill through the orchard, and then back in to the jungle were the trail took us in a loop around the outskirts of the dam. When we reached to the edge of the water, Melissa was rowing
back in the boat to take the next lot of ladies across the water though a few ladies decided to swim!  I thought about it and so did Maria but not for long; in the end we decided to stay dry while Claire just jumped into the water and swam across followed by Anna. Once we were back in the jungle again following the paper trail, we soon reached a down slope were we had rope to assist us. Then we were out on to the muddy area and back to the site. There were  plenty of mosquitoes out tonight; so pleased I wore long sleeve top!
It was a great run/walk
At the shout up there were three new guests: Yara from Russia, Rachel, Nicky from UK. No calls for the hashit this week…
Congratulations to Possum in completing 250 walks.
The rain held off until the end of the shout up and poured down in true Morley Movers hash site style!!

Well! After sitting in traffic on Jalan Jerudong for nearly an hour I realised I was an ASS (assuming there’d be a sign on Jalan Jerudong) and made the call to Marg and Cath who sent me off to Jalan Tutong. At 6pm, just before Sleazy Gardens, I drove past Ryvita who looked pretty fresh still, offered her a lift which she declined and found a park.

Once she and Yvette (Hash Hound) were hosed down, they joined me at a table and told me about the run. ‘Very muddy, Maria (Satu Lagi) found the first check, Boel the second, 45 minutes for the front runners’, and Ryvita said that she’d overbalanced on a log and fallen into water up to her armpits. No wonder she looked clean. Satu Lagi observed that if it’d been she who’d fallen in, she would have disappeared from view.

Just before the shout up, Cath (Legally Blonde) passed out presents to everyone, fantastic 2 bottle coolie bags, thankyou Cath.

As it was the ANZAC run, the Kiwi and Aussie flags were proudly displayed, Jan (Possum) spoke of the ANZACs and why we remember them so respectfully and gratefully. Catherine read the dedication and we observed a minute’s silence before Jan read out a moving poem. To finish off the ANZAC remembrance, the Australians and Kiwis loudly and gustily sang their respective national anthems. It’s good how the words come back.

We welcomed two guests, one German and one British and a short time later, two more emerged from the jungle with Zuriana and Irene (Sarong). We welcomed them too, one Irish, one Australian.

Announcements were: Serunai Singers and the Red Dress run.

At the end, I asked who was responsible for the shout up starting before the last runners were out of the jungle. Bad idea. The hares will be on my tail now.. omg they are so going to get me.

It was a humid afternoon last Tuesday as we congregated at Mrs. Pingu’s Mansion for our weekly run/walk/talk.  The mansion was already done up ready for a great British On On and the dragons on flags were flying high from the camelbaks of many of the runners.

Ryvita lead the pack, with front horn as the girls took off up a quick trek across cleared grounds and then up into the forest towards the ridge and lots of ups and downs.   It threatened rain, but just spat a little.  The ground was wet on the way in down the first muddy slope to a creek, we met up with Glamour and Duchess, who were contemplating the muddy slide!

Lots of new ground cut through in and around the farms and a quick road walk back for a festive on on…
The girls led the shout up with a rousing chorus of all things great and English…the spice girls! And prizes of Wine gums for dragons found were dolled out.

The English quiz with more prizes made lots of sexual innuendos and good laughs.

RUN NO. 2278 DIPLO 17 APR 12

RUN NO. 2278
DATE: 17 APR 2012
SITE: DIPLO
HARES: Sarong/Mani Mouse/Gloria

The wild thunderstorm of the previous evening was the main topic of conversation as an eager group of lady hashers gathered last Tuesday evening. Some commented that they hadn't experienced banging like that in years.

There was a faint odour of bad eggs in the air, which I think was the detritus from the kids hash a couple of days earlier at which many, many eggs were smashed... or maybe it was just the left over whiff of the kids! The eagle eyed amongst us may have seen egg shells everywhere and I was secretly a bit more scared than usual, thinking what a lovely meal a slimy raw egg might be for one of our slithery friends.

And so off we went like racing snakes (one or two hens anyway), squelching through the boggy sand before entering the leafy green jungle and scrambling down, down, down into another Tuesday night adventure - what would Diplo deliver to us this evening?

First check was found quickly and we all piled onwards, still full of energy which soon dissipated for some, as a huge hill loomed ahead and we started trekking upwards, a few of us stopping halfway up, suddenly desirous of taking in the view ... nothing to do with running out of breath. We conquered it little by little and finally everyone felt victorious on top .... exactly what makes life fun.

Second check came soon afterwards and then a third but they were both pretty straightforward and we continued up and down the trippy trails once more, traversing some streams en route. One log bridge in particular was a bit wobbly and I nearly tipped into the murky water of the stream and it wouldn't have been for the first time. It was a lovely run, with I think some new paths cut. The final hill was a challenge and thus there was much relief when we emerged through the ferny bracken to enjoy the vestiges of light shining warmly upon our ruddy complexions - mine at least!

There was a cordial shout up and the first timers behaved impeccably, sticking to all the rules, having been well briefed, so no risk of a hashit there. Thus the JM and GM were forced to fabricate a story about someone talking but to no avail! Suddenly a mobile phone ring blared out from the jungle quiet. The JM and GM thought things were looking up for a hashit extravaganza an almost started to prepare the icy water but no, it was a mercy call from Trailblazer who had become lost in the darkest depths of Diplo, so Hash Hound  and Sarong (and maybe others, I'm not sure as I was too busy talking!) sallied forth and Trailblazer emerged not too much later still with plenty of time to enjoy the blue and green hues of the rainforest at dusk, or at least in the esky.

There was also a celebration of April birthdays, Madam Sin's being particularly memorable thanks to DST's promotional generosity and we then settled down to a delicious selection of curries which I had intended to skip but after a couple of blues, they seemed all the more tempting and I ended up making the right decision - the food was delectable!

Thanks so much to the hares for an exhilarating run and gorgeous food.  on on Anna M.

This was a special run in remembrance of a fellow hasher whose life was plucked tragically by an irresponsible driver. But we move on and remember the good times. The day itself was pleasant, no rain, no blistering sun just wonderfully congenial for our run. The run, a five kilometer run, had all the ingredients that made it very doable especially - NO CHECKS!!! Whooo hooo - clear all the way.

We scrambled on in a relaxed, unconcerned manner when the horn went off heralding that the run had begun. Ah, was it because we would not have to worry about anything because it promised to be a straight forward run? Hmmmm. It turned out to be not so straightforward after all because there were still some small hills to climb, some long stretches of trails that needed negotiating because we had to walk along slopes and thus maintain our balance and ensure that we did not twist an ankle. We strolled along, some chatting, some dreaming, and some running- as usual. Finally, all of us returned in good time, hungry and ready for the feast awaiting us.

The shout up began with the GMs thanking front horn ( Karen?), back horn (Naj) and the hares- Heather, Marcela, and Madam Sin. We had a guest, Sunny, from England as well. Debora read a moving memorial poem for Lee. Then it was time for Fish and chips and camaraderie to end the lovely evening. On on.

What a lovely evening! No rain and a great run. What more could a hasher want.
The evening started well and it was good to see a few hashers on their return from the holidays. The trails were of a typical hash with a few ups and downs and with a few good cheeky checks thrown in. Glad that Mad Margz phone (lost on laying the trail) was found too. Thank you girls for a great hash. The samosas were yummy too!

This weeks hash is our memorial run for our greatly missed honorary member Lee Roadrunner Jefford. We planned this with her very much in our thoughts as 370 has still fortunately some of her favourite trails.

Lee was an avid book lover and loved poems and rhymes so we have dedicated this little ditty to her.

HERE WE GO ROUND THE HASH

This is the way we lay the hash, lay the hash, lay the hash,
This is the way we lay the hash on a hot and humid Tuesday.

This is the way we follow the paper, follow the paper, follow the paper,
This is the way we follow the paper on a hot and humid Tuesday.

On and on we cross the streams, cross the streams, cross the streams,
On and on we cross the streams on a hot and humid Tuesday.

Then we go running up the hills ,down the hills, up the hills,
Then we go running up the hills on a hot and humid Tuesday.

This is the way we finish the hash, finish the hash, finish the hash,
This is the way we finish the hash with a blue or greeny cold one.

RUN NO. 2275
DATE: 27 MAR 2012
SITE: MENTERI LINK
HARES: GI Jane/Sid
FRONT HORN: Fertile Myrtle BACK HORN: Erin/Alice in Wonderland

A rather grey day out on the Mentiri highway. Perhaps the burst of rain not long before the horn blew contributed to the low turnout or perhaps hens were still on holiday, but the keen souls who did turn up eagerly awaited their chance to ascend into the depths of the Salimbigar jungle. Actually it turned out to be more the heights of the jungle, as after we had waded through the bracken to the left of the waterpipes, the trail began to climb. First check was soon found by the eagle eyes of Mad Margz and the hens continued to toil ever upwards. Second check proved rather more elusive and after much calling, clucking and wagging of tail feathers, Ready Mix finally discovered the on-trail up the hill and over a ridge. The by now widely scattered Hens struggled up any way they could (in some cases making their own trail through the undergrowth) to get back on paper. The trail carried on (and often up. Note: It is a weird phenomenon that runs in this area always seem to contain more up trail than down trail.) through some lovely areas of jungle. A third check was found by Fertile Myrtle and knowing the end was not too far away the hens ran, strolled, and stumbled down the final path coming out of the bracken next to the starting point.

Most hens gradually trundled down the road to GI Jane’s new abode at Simpang 420 on Jalan Muara but final numbers at the shout up were probably only about 20-25. A decision was unanimously made to have a ‘sitting meeting’ so hens gathered in a circle, relaxed in their chairs, drinks in hands, with the familiar background sounds of can tabs being pulled and peanut shells being cracked. There was one first time guest, Heather (what a lovely name!), from Scotland who is directing a visiting theatre company working at ISB. Never Wrong was piled with praises and heartily applauded for her achievement of her 350 runs award. There was one lot of hash shit given out, and Smurf updated us on Magic Roundabout’s latest adventures since leaving Brunei. By now the aroma of hot soup was pervading the night air and hungry hens lined up for their piping hot bowl of lentil soup and delicious brown bread. As the stars twinkled far above, happy hens slowly folded their chairs and wended their way home.

30 hens and 3 chicks

A fine afternoon with the usual clucking as hens gathered at the tent waiting for the horn to set us off on the run. We headed into the jungle by climbing the muddy hill complete with its many excavations. The in trail was on the right and we soon came across the coloured 1st check paper. Passing the site of the old gardens we turned right onto the main ridge and went up and down along this for quite a while. The hares were kind to us and we did not have to go down into the valley and up again, we took the path left and went out into more open ground along the fence (of what may be the Brunei secret service – who knows!). After walking down and over drains we headed up again and returned to the tree cover. We were now on the opposite ridge and continued all the way along to the end, reaching the junction with the path that goes down to the end of Spg 542. At this point we turned left onto the path that leads to the lake. However before we reached it were turned right and joined the track that goes out to Spg 542. A new area of trees had been cut down just before we arrived at the road. What could they be planning there? Thanks hares for the conveniently placed logs at the exit that saved us sinking into the mud. We returned along the road to the tent.

The shout up was a little quieter than usual with many hens away for the holidays. There were no first time guests, no awards and no new members. However Cow Girl was back with us and we did have 2 dogs on the run. Announcements included information about fund raising for an injured H4 hasher, Terry, who needs to be evacuated to the UK for further treatment following a head injury. A T shirt is being sold at $25 to raise money. Please see Mad Marg to order one or pass to her any donations you would like to make. Other fund raising events will follow. Mad Marg was the honoured hash member who received the hash hit this week when her phone went off during the shout up. She has Nancy to thank for that (and golf) who should actually know better!

As usual I came straight from work and heard the horn when I parked my car.

After quickly signing in, I rushed to catch up with the other hens, which was not easy as it went up the first steep hill. Reaching the top of the hill we turned right on to one of the main trails of this area.

So along I went on the ridge for a while until there was a left turn going down towards the river and soon I found the blue paper indicating the first check.

Crossing the river we turned right and “OH NO” they made us climb that damn hill!!!! Finally after huffing and puffing I made it to the top, where we turned left again. At least now it was going down the hill and not the other way around. We crossed the log which has mushrooms (some of you might call them fungi) growing on it, just beautiful!

At some stage we turned to the right, going further down until we reached the tip of the swamp, crossing some deep water hole and reached a field. The hens were still scattered in the area checking for the “on” paper. Finally someone called and there we went, back into the jungle.

“Oh No” not another hill to climb, but at least it wasn’t as steep as the previous one. Reaching the top of the ridge, soon we were back down the hill, which we first climbed up.

Thank you hares for this great run.

Sorry, I had to leave right after the run, but here are some notes from my co-hare Eastern Promise:

The Shout up was at Jane’s house across the other side of Jalan Muara and everyone was asked to wear something green, as we celebrated St Patrick’s Day. A lot of hens took an effort and dressed up; some of them looked really nice. Prizes were given to runners finding shamrocks in the jungle.

Jane was given a hash handle and from now on is called “Sticky Rice”.

Finally Satu Lagi and Annabel were given the hashit for indicating the wrong hash site.

The food afterwards was not to be missed. Thanks a lot to the hares for the yummy feast and fruits afterwards!
