RUN NO. 2071

DATE: 29 APRIL 2008
SITE: Bukit Serdang, Kota Batu—Yacht Club end
HENS: 37
HARES:Dizzy
FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Tina I

Hash night and the real race is on, trying to get out the door with dogs or kids escapaing and making sure I have enough cash for coupons, oh guess, I should take some water. Destination Kota Batu, not sure which end but try to keep one eye out for the dazzling signage whilst negotiating Kijangs and Lexus’s and hundreds of school children with the other eye. (Don’t’ they know its Tuesday?)
The road seemed to go on long enough for me to think, have I missed it, but then there was the welcoming group of cars and fellow hashers collecting on the side of the road. Adrenalin of course is already pumping by now as the front runners head off, over a stick bridge and up. I headed the back side. Ha ha and did my best to walk and talk. There was a lot of up and a lot of steps.

Stairway to heaven was a song which comes to mind, with a few down bits to break it up, oh and a very large beetle. We had to stop and admire whilst catching our breath, which was then taken away by the view WOW so stunning.
Not only did we have fabulous views to admire but also an abundance of pitcher plants, to ooohh and aaarh over, what a treat.

As we continued on our merry way, sweating and puffing, plantings of passion fruit in the jungle gave us more to wonder and talk about. A few hens had turned back somewhere about here as we still had a long way to go, but there was so much more to see. On on

First check came and went, apparently with slight confusion, back on paper and more fantastic views over the Brunei River and Kampong with butterflies and swallows to complete the scene. Apparently we were on a lollypop with some going one way and some doing the other, but all met up on the stick but, I guess.
Heading down now and just amazed at all the pitcher plants and even say baby ones, so cute!! Mosque call now fills the twilight air, as well as the smell of wild vanilla orchids and the promise of a good shout up at Dizzies, hurried the last hens out of the jungle and over the stick bridge.

Thank you hares for laying such an interesting run, the Kota Batu views and pitcher plants were really amazing and the hills are a good challenge for the old bods.
Sorry, I missed the shout up, but I am sure it all went down a treat. On on Tracey.

P.S. Thank you for the great chow from Ricky’s restaurant and the singing practice went on ……….

RUN NO. 2070

DATE: 22 April 2008
SITE: Diplo (ANZAC run)
HARES: Madmarg/Heather S/Linda G/Cath C
HENS: 41 CHICKS: 2

Well, last weeks run turned out to be a bit of a surprise for some people. In hindsight the first indication was when i passed Glamour and Veronica returning back to base having not been able to find first check. I should have realised that something was up then but at that point i was still trying to catch up with the front runners and my focus was on the first of far too many hills looming up infront of me. And there were many of them, slippery and steep; and streams too wide to jump with no bridge available. Three checks, both back and forward, but the back wasn't back enough for me to even hear the callers, even though i was passed at one stage by panting streaks of lightening. And... what a surprise to end up at Subok.

It should be noted that being last on such occasions has the huge advantage of not having to wait for all the walkie talkies who delay the return of the bus, (and that i was being a very conciencious back horn and not just slow!)

The onon looked like a fair without the rides. Scantilly clad women in various states of undress, shouting and laughter and music, ice cream vans selling fish and chips and girls shouting 'free t shits, come get one'.

At the shout up we had more fair ground antics, starting with two visitors and then an outstanding jewellery exhibition hosted by Veronica to celebrate 1000 runs, a truly glitzy occasion. More jewellery ensued with a gift from the Aussie Hi Com of entwined flags, Brunei and Australia, a symbol of the close International Hashing Bondage developed by some of us on our recent trip to Perth. The merriment continued to increase with the arrival of the latest Hash Group, soon to appear infront of Simon Cowal, our very own Tripple Severn Girls - "yes let's hear it for the 777" - with antics galore to relate from their recent trip to Mens Hash on the island of Moon, including singing and dancing a la Can Can. And after that there was no stopping some. Ghetto blaster at the ready Carol managed to be both conductor and sometime lead singer in yet another soon to be famous Hash Group, as yet unnamed, with a corageously wobbly rendition of a very well known Queen song, but i am damed if i recognised it. So keep practicing girls.

A big thanks to Hares for an excellent A - B run. Good fish and chips with coleslaw and Anzac biscuits from the ANZAC girls.

RUN NO. 2069

DATE: 14 April 2008
SITE: Spg 378 Sg Akar (Opp Rubbish Dump)
HARES: Jane W/Sarah H
FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Mad Marg
HENS: 39 CHICKS: 1

Shortly after arriving at the site and parking my car, the tent arrived. It was decided that it was impossible to drive the truck up the steep hill as cars were parked on the side of the hill so the tent was set up at the usual area.

Once the hens had recovered after walking up the steep slope to the starting point, the hens set off at 5.15pm lead by front horn Carol. It was the usual trail in, but then within a short distance we turned left and were heading down the side of the steep hill. First check was two thirds of the way down the hill and it didn't take to long before the check was found by Sarah C who called the on on paper. We continued to the bottom of the valley, crossed a small stream and headed along a nice trail that I hadn't been on, before heading down into the valley again, with the support of a rope from the top of the hill. We continued along the unfamiliar trail until we got onto a well defined path. At this stage it took me a few minutes to realize where we were, actually on the Subok Ridge, we had a few steps to climb first then we were on to a nice easy trail with great views!

In the distance I could see Nancy walking further along the ridge and I was hoping that our trail would soon turn right and down the hill otherwise we were in for a very long run. It did say in the words to bring a touch! As it turned out, Nancy had missed the turn off and was called back and was soon back on paper. At the bottom of the hill we headed to the right, crossed a steam and continued along a winding trail though the jungle, climbing over a few trees that had come down in a storm and as well as the occasional muddy patch. We climbed the hill joining the main trail again and followed this until we reached the ridge, turned right and re-joined the in trail and then it was a short trot down the hill and back to the hash site. We were out just before it got dark and I have no idea who found second or third checks.

It was still very warm by the time the shout up started. The shout up was orderly but Kathy Knell was named for the hashit for forgetting to sign out. Lucky for her she had left early to go home—but watch out Kathy for next week.

The main event for the evening was the official naming of Nellie. Apparently in Perth they kept asking her if she had a hash handle—to which she kept replying “not yet” - so hence she is to be known from this day forward as NOT YET TINA TURNER.

Thank you hares for a great run and for the nectar juice and samoosas.

On On!

RUN No. 2068

DATE: 8 April 2008
SITE: Lucky Gardens
HARES: Trailblazer/Cheryl/Alison T
Hens:41 Chicks: 3
Front Horn: Lee
Back Horn: Alison

The hens gathered at an old favorite site of Lucky Gardens –don’t think we’ve been here since the New Year. Thanks goes to the Hares for laying an ‘emergency run’. The hare line is still a bit thin, so if you can lay a run please sign up! As we were waiting for the horn to sound the tent arrived and promptly got stuck on the muddy verge to the site. A few strong hashers gave the truck a good shove to get it moving again.

As the horn sounded we were off - some a little faster than others. We skirted left around the edge of a small ‘lake’ and then 1st check was called. Hens wandered this way and that ‘checking’, ‘checking’ to no avail. Just as we thought we need to check further a field the ‘on back’ was called by Sue Johnson - an advantage to arriving late to the hash! With the pack turned around we set off again - up, up we went to the top of the ridge. Back horn informed me that if I could make it up this hill I’d be fine to go right round. I had planned to do a short hash as I was recovering from a chest infection but these words spurred me on to go right around. I am very glad I did as the run was superb, a bit of something for everyone. Stunning views greeted us as we reached the top of the hill and a small plantation of sago (so Heather informed me). The only distraction being the squeaky windmills - next time we’re up here maybe we should bring some WD40! No-one was sure what the windmills were for maybe for irrigation or to scare off the birds.

Along the ridge we all trooped until 2nd check was called again the hens were running around checking back and forth not sure which way to go. Eventually the on paper was called by Magic. Back down into the valley we went and crossed a small muddy stream. Tina I commented that it wouldn’t be a hash without going though water. Fortunately this was only a quick paddle and we were up again. The paths became easier and were on good terrain for the FRB’s. Just as hens were looking for the homeward straight 3rd check was found by Trisha and it was plain sailing on the out trail to the road and the hash site.

An entertaining on on with JM’s Sarah and Nellie. New guests were to be welcomed but they had already left to go to the Nature Society meeting. We welcomed 2 new members into the fold Boel and Julie. Birthday wishes were sung in true hash style to Never Wrong and Madam Sin. The Ladies hash representatives gave us a quick run down on the Interhash in Perth and encouraged all to register for the 2010 Interhash to be held in Kuching. Brunei was well represented in Perth and it was interesting to note that the average age on the interhash was 52, makes me a young whippersnapper then.

RUN NO. 2067

DATE: 1 APRIL 2008
SITE: Menteri Dam, Salambigar - Menteri Link
HARES: Sarong/Never Wrong
FRONT HORN: Anna S
BACK HORN: Trailblazer
HENS: 38 CHICKS: 1

We arrived at the site with hens parking along the highway having been warned that the boom gate would be down although no one knew at what time. As good hashers, all who had park beyond the boom gate moved their car in case they got shut in - hence no tent had been ordered as the truck may not have been able to go through.

As it was a new site, the horn sounded at 5.15 and we tracked along some barren land and was soon into the jungle. Once in pretty wide trails followed and we could see it would be great running for the FRBs. Not far in we met Pee Wee who was already heading back as she had tripped and hurt her hand. We went up and up and 1st check was found by Magic Roundabout, keen as mustard after World Interhash in Perth that had no jungle like Brunei.

Tango found 2nd check but turned back as she had seen trees with 2 balls hanging and was not sure if it was an apparition (was Greg in town?) She reckoned she had seen this twice and called it a day. However, Cannibal and Magic have since confirmed that they were no more than ant nests!

We were rewarded with a fantastic view at the top of the ridge and certainly worth a "Kodak moment". We saw the Menteri Golf Club and right across to Brunei Bay....... a sight not seen on the Ladies Hash.....

The sojourn to Perth had certainly sharpened Running Bare's skills in checking and she was rewarded by finding third check. The trails were well maintained (by the villagers, so we learned) and even had ropes along the sides of most inclines. Periodically there were signs with names and mobile numbers in case anyone needed assistance. And as we reached the top of the last hill a sign in malay gave encouragement and expressed that should you be tired, take a breather, have a rest before carrying on.

Shout up by JM Sarah B assisted by GM Ellin started orderly and Legally Blonde had a birthday card that sang given to her. Hashshit changed hands as Heather S's mobile rang during the shout up. Delicious curry puffs and a variety of dips were served up by the hares on a makeshift table and so the night went on. Thank you hares.

SITE: 23 Jalan Aman, off Jln Muara, Kg Sg Tilong
HENS: 24 CHICKS: 2
HARES:Trailblazer/Tina L FRONT HORN: Legolass (visiting from Hong Kong)
BACK HORN: Ah Struth

A small group of hens who were not lucky enough to be away on holidays gathered at the site on a clear night with no storm clouds brewing. As the hares had not given us any hints on the run we did not know what to expect.

We headed off across the road and into the jungle. We proceeded along through bracken fern and came to some muddy water to wade through to ensure that nobody ended up with clean shoes. We scrambled along through low hanging branches, one time when it is an advantage to be short or to be politically correct (vertically challenged.)  plenty of trips and some thorns.

First check was reached and found quickly but I cannot tell you who by then we turned left through more jungle. We head along for about 15 mins towards the road and just when I thought we heading back in again we were back at the site.

The hares gathered back and shared tales of their adventures in Perth.
The shout up was commenced and two first time guests were introduced Nicky who lived in Brunei for 3 years and never did a hash then Colleen a visitor from Canada.
Legolass who is visiting from Hong Kong and kindly volunteered to be front horn was given a down down. We look forward to seeing her again in May when she returns for the Nash Hash with other Hong Kong hashers. Hashing must be a very civilised there because she tells me if you get lost you simply catch a taxi back.
The Hares provided chicken salad and Easter eggs. Thank you hares.
Everyone enjoyed the rest of the evening.

RUN NO. 2065

Date: 18 Mar 2008
HARES: Tango/Amanda S & guest hare Peter Packer
SITE: Morley Movers
HENS: 30+ CHICKS: 4
FRONT HORN: Carol (with apprentice Lauren) BACK HORN: Madmarg (with a mission)

A pleasant evening was promised and the hens were all rearing to go with a motley array of green attire as we set off up the usual climb up towards the water tower to start the “St Patrick’s Day” run. The climb continued on and on and on (yes, the words did say “some climbing”) but the run had been worded as 45 minutes for FRBs and 1hr 15 for the walkie-talkies. We were told to look out for Shamrocks on the way.

Soon the familiar stream, and we had to get our feet wet. First check (back, was called) as we ducked down the valley aided by a rope. Back horn was worried about Pee Wee who had not been seen after running off checking. Back horn waited, called and honked for a while but Pee Wee was nowhere to be seen. A quick call to Smurf by Trailblazer soon confirmed Pee Wee was safe back by the site. Apparently while Pee Wee was checking, had cut the paper and found her way out with Smurf.

Lots of thorns around, thru pretty trails and the constant sound of waterfalls and flowing streams could be heard as we wound our way through. Second check was quickly found (by whom I do not know, and due to lack of time (as I am rushing to get this off to Words before taking off to Perth World Interhash) have not checked with the hens to see who found the checks. If I had left writing this till I got back on Monday evening, I am sure Ah Struth would have texted me a few times by then! Not taking the risk of trying to find an internet café while in Perth, I thought I had better do this early morning report.

Screeches could be heard ahead by a stream as Peter Packer(PP) was sighted. Few hens posed for photos, and as we had to make sure PP got home Sid relieved Madmarg for a while and slung PP over her shoulders. Discussions followed as to whether we could actually take a real person out thus, but concluded that it would be difficult. Alison and Cheryl were having a little rest as we came across them, but alas PP was no help looking under the weather and deflated probably still hung over from St Patricks Day celebrations.

We were soon out on the clearing after another climb up to the ridge. A good run – thank you hares and PP, and we were all out in the light and trotted off to Tango’s house for the on on.

Shout up was orderly, with Pee Wee and Amanda S awarded with pewter goblets for their 50 run achievements. Those finding Shamrocks were given gifts by the hares. JM Nellie was keen to give the hashit out and Hashit was given to Alice in wonderland and Trish for failing to sign out. Alice in Wonderland tried to plead her innocence as she was busy paying out money. (Advice – for any one, sign out first before anything else once you come out of the jungle: actually, was Alice in the jungle?) Trish, had signed off on Alison on the line below (maybe glasses are in order….. or would that be admitting age is catching up…. Ha ha. Blame in on your new job – too much computer work and looking at the screen day in and day out)

Delicious Vegetarian Irish Stew prepared by the hares was served with bread – thank you ladies., another enjoyable evening as the food was washed down with G & Ts. On on Trailblazer

HENS: 39 CHICKS: 4

It was a lovely evening for a hash – not too wet - not too hot – to coin the words of Goldilocks - it was just right!

With the horn blowing we all set off for a run on one of our more favourite sites. We were not to be disappointed as we headed up and down and up and down………and up and down ! To say the terrain was undulating would be an understatement. However we were to be rewarded with beautiful meandering trails and a lot of pretty streams to cross.
First check was found by Heather L who is an inspiration to us all as she managed to get to first check first and is with child [congratulations by the way! Look forward to seeing baby L on a run soon!]

Despite the heavy evenings rains we have been having it wasn’t too muddy on the trail although there were a few slippery bits and Dizzy did a good attempt at arse ski-ing at one point which I believe was worthy of at least a 9.8.

The run was going very smoothly and 2nd check was found by readymix. There were a few steep ledges in the bracken to negotiate and I shouted to Tina to warn her as she has a propensity for Hash Stunts. Thankfully she has improved on her Hashing Technique and a crisis was averted!

3rd check was found by our own Back Horn Jane – well done you – a Walkie Talkie finding a check – you go girl! Then some FRB’s overtook us and shouted that we needed to go faster as we were only half way through the run. We were nearly 50mins into the run - silence prevailed as someone reminded us that there had been no timings on the words! It was of course a Hash Rumour! We were out in 1hr 15 – just right!

The shout up was Hash Orderly and 3 first time guests were introduced. Jenny and Kerry from Downunder [to be noted - Kerry downed her liquid in one go – we have high expectations for you Kerry!] and Julie from France. A big Hash welcome to you all!
Tango nearly got Hash Shit for not informing her guest of Hash Protocol – but it turned out to be a dud ads can! Lucky! However Hash Shit was given to Dizzy and Nellie. Bini Hutan claimed her Hash Shit offence given by Nellie wasn’t valid as her new shoes had broken this week. Dizzy apparently got it for no other reason than being Dizzy and for foolishly admiring the Hash Shit bag! Having no extra clothes did not deter them as they bravely stripped off and took the Hash Shit! Well done girls!

Readymix celebrated her birthday – although she wasn’t sharing the exact age – but she looks well for being a year older whatever the age. She was presented with a lovely cake which we all enjoyed later.

As it was Diplo we all brought Dips and Dippers. What a great idea! What a feast – such lovely dips – could we have Hash Domestic Goddess section to the words to print the recipes we have enjoyed?
A lovely run – thank you ladies!!

BACK HORN: Sarong

The sky threatened to open up although it had already bucketed down the previous evening and earlier in the day; however it stayed away for the rest of the evening.
I was running late, and after signing in and proceeded down towards a very wet in-trail. We were met by Bettina and Bini Hutan heading back “exclaiming that it was too wet and slippery.” Besides, I believe Bini Hutan had new shoes! (And got the hashit for it. Bettina also got it for telling so no one was spared. Trish was very quick to get rid of the hashit and gave both Bettina and Bini Hutan warm foot washes.)

We went thru some muddy tracks and watery holes, including smelly ones and once in the jungle were heading down some very slippery slip sliding slopes. First check caught everyone together and indeed was a side-way back check found by Sarong.
Pitcher plants dotted most of the way as we found ourselves thru more wet crossings and pretty waterfalls. 2nd check was found by Alison, although my detective work did not disclose the finder of 3rd check. The view of the skyline was fantastic and bits of Bandar Seri Begawan could be seen as we went along a ridge.

Running Bare was practicing some skills in making sure snakes and such like scattered as she approached with loud claps for the forthcoming World Interhash at Perth. Some thought they should be turning around as the promise of a short run was indicated but the run seemed to continue on, and on we soon suspected that it could be an A to B – this proved true as we got to the top of the ridge and a sign that said “way out or you could do the Tasek loop should you need a longer run”.
As we headed to the bottom of Bukit Salilah adjacent to The Sheraton Hotel, a debate was going on as to how the run was described as short. It was soon clear that it was a misinterpretation of “not a long run”. The run had indeed not been described as “short”. Although it was a small group, the hares that met us were pleased that most had gone round, and the bus that was to transfer the hens back to Subok 67 made two trips.

The shout up was very orderly and soon we were tucking into Soto (a local soup) with a topping choice of beef, chix or veggies. A pleasant change and many thanks to the hares for providing the chow. Trish celebrated her birthday with a cake and as usual the hard core hens carried on till late in the evening.

RUN NO. 2062

DATE: 26 FEB 2008
SITE: Diplo
HARES: Anna S/Diana S FRONT HORN: Pee Wee
BACK HORN: Trailblazer
HENS: 40 CHICKS: 1

Here we were again, at one of our very favourite hashing sites. JM Sarah was searching for horny volunteers. An extra incentive this week – NEW HORNS! Procured from a bike shop in the Philippines by Trailblazer, how exciting! Pee Wee had really done lasting damage the week previously so this was somehow inevitable. Magic took the front horn – and with her a protégée, and Trailblazer the back horn. So at 5.15, and a toot of the new horn, off we went.

Into the middle and down, despite the rain at the weekend, it wasn’t actually too slippery. We followed the trail along, crossing the stream, all very familiar, when the familiarity hit me like a wet fish. We were heading towards Indonesia Hill – the steepest and meanest hill at Diplo (not counting Markucing if you go up the back way). Up and up and up…………..and up and up and up…………..and up! As we should have known, a check was looming, just down the other side of the hill to the right. I rather stupidly checked ahead, knowing full well it would be on back, and found myself back at the bottom of the valley. Magic lost her protégée, who decided she would rather ‘just have a run’. Well it would be lovely if we could all just do that every week, but then there wouldn’t be a Hash would there? And actually, front horn often has a hell of a lot of running to do – especially catching up after making sure paper is laid through on checks. AND you have the right to yell “Horn coming through” and the rest of the hens will scatter in your wake! So come on ladies, if you want a good run, have a go at front horn – there are many willing to instruct you in a bit of basic hash craft!

As I predicted, the check was on back. So up I trudged, thankfully Trailblazer had waited to call me through with the back horn. I don’t think I caught up in time to see second check, so well done to whoever found it! We were getting some good running in here. And I did manage to catch up by third check, which was again on back. However as the on paper was called, everyone followed the call and got to the paper, and left poor Legally Blonde holding the paper back on the check, unable to hear what was going on. I went back and called her through, or it would have been a long night for her! The rest of the hash was lovely, some good little inclines and great running trails, good for stretching the legs! One last killer of a rise up on out, and a quick trot across the sand and back to sign out.

The shout up commenced, (virgin) hares were down downed for a great run. No new members this week, and no real call for the Hashit. Everyone was behaving. Makan followed, provided by the hares. Best makan we have had for ages. A delectable selection of pates and dips and salad, alongside fresh baguettes. So good that several of us have felt inspired to try making them ourselves this week, just ask Madam Delia Sin. The night then continued into the usual camaraderie and conviviality, under the darkening skies…….On on!

RUN NO. 2061

DATE: 19 February 2008
SITE: Spg 102, Jalan Dadap
HARES: Readymix/Trailblazer
HENS: 40
FRONT HORN: Pee Wee
BACK HORN: Ah Struth
CELEBRATION: Readymix 300 runs

Arriving just in time, I headed off behind Carol, Running Bare in bright orange and Pee Wee who was today’s front horn.

After so many days of rain it was surprisingly dry as we started our run.
Initially I was a bit worried about the local dogs barking and running after us.
This we soon forgot after taking in the spectacular views!

I was excited as I had never ran in this area before!
10 minutes in to the run Carol says; “probably a check coming up”, and there it was!
Early I thought, but Pee Wee found it quickly and we moved in, through the scratchy bracken.

Running Bare was dressed in her VERY orange shorts and wished she had worn something LONGER!

The scenery was fantastic and we felt like explorers.

Magic and Tia Maria were on the ball and found 2nd check!

After a lot of up & down, up & down and more up up & down I realised that this was a proper hash, this is what it’s all about!

At this point we WERE mountaineers.

Pee Wee was on top form and found 3rd check but then her horn broke, knob fell off…………………

Pee Wee was very upset!

The last bit was just beautiful, great running and then a water fall to top it off!

We came out after 45 minutes and headed to Ready Mix for the shout up.

We were all wearing red and gold with a few variations, all for the special celebration of Chinese New Year!

The hares were celebrated for their Very challenging run and we heard fireworks in the back ground.

Hash shit was wanted to be given to Trish for driving the wrong way but as Tango had all the necessities it was not handed out this evening.

Ready Mix’s food came from the Chinese hashers and it was delicious.

Cocktails were served by the very charming Wilhelmina from Down under and Tiffany from Thailand.

The drama of the evening was grief given by drivers complaining over our parking!! How dare they?

Thank you hares for my best run yet and for a delicious spread!! Anna

FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Naj
HENS: 44 CHICKS: 1
NEW MEMBERS: TANIA C/MARIA T

It was a cool evening after several days and the whole morning’s rain, a wet run was possible but as the afternoon fined up, a great run set by our most experienced hares with an accumulated total of 1100 runs, became a reality.

I was running late due to some traffic jam on Jalan Muara and after signing in headed up the hill towards the water tower on the usual in at 5.30pm.
Bettina and I noticed some stray paper at the fork of a trail and concluded that must have been first check laid back – apparently found by Alison and Cheryl. We then headed down towards the stream and thru lots of trips and the usual thorny trails we wound our way around. We were pleased to soon catch up with the rest of the runners.

2nd check, back again was called, and found by Alison and Naj (self confessed “Nag”). The waterfalls and gentle cascades were both soothing to the ears and our heels as the day was indeed becoming increasingly hot and balmy.
Magic Roundabout did not miss a trick this time and found 3rd check. Apparently there was a 4th but whether it was found or by whom I did not manage to find out. However, we were soon out – yours truly in half an hour and I guess for the rest of the pack within 45 minutes from the start. We were all out before it got dark.
We quickly changed and a photo shoot with our Founders Day gear ensued as we milled around and socialized while Smurf raced into the distance to the beach to collect our fish and chips tea.

The shout up progressed with the usual order and two new members welcomed. The hares were congratulated for their run achievements. As we were in the middle of Chinese New Year celebrations, crackers and fireworks could be heard in the distance and some even sounded really close. Alas, when hashit was thrown at Naj for parking her car in a way blocking public access, our own fireworks went on display! After an exchange of choice speeches, screeches from tyres and the driver with honking of the horn saw a car leaving the site and disappearing into the distance….. never to return? The hens thought they were attending a children’s matinee!

With the drama over for the evening, and the announcement of more Chinese New Year celebrations for the following week with the run at Jalan Dadap and the on on at GM Readymix. The theme was to be gold and red in line with the celebrations. May be we will see more fireworks then!

Thank you hares for a great run and good chow! On on. Trailblazer

DATE: 5 FEBRUARY 2008

FRONT HORN: Pee Wee
BACK HORN: Alice in Wonderland

In the hours before sunset the adventure began. Tango, while attempting a particularly tricky short cutting manoeuvre managed to lodge her 4WD over a deep drain. Nothing shifts a jeep with one wheel hanging over a chasm, but not to worry, from a neighbouring simpang Cannibal ‘flew’ in to the rescue with a strong jack and a piece of wood. It’s amazing how many new skills he has perfected while waiting for his plane to arrive! In a flash of highly tuned skill, order was restored. Thank you.

The hens clucked in happiness and soon Pee Wee led us down from Bini Hutan’s garden into the jungle. Already we, (Madam Sin, Jan M and I) were at the back and contemplating THAT big hill. But no, the trail turned right and down following the old riverbed. We took a quick detour to see the moonscape below and were shocked to see the destruction and demolition of so many pretty runs! And to what purpose, I ask? Back to the trail, over a lovely old bridge and out onto a new construction road. We could see the paper going right into the jungle, and we could hear hens everywhere. Soon we could see them milling about everywhere too. A few headed off checking afar, especially up a particularly nasty hill. Jane, as it turned out, was oh so close, but…… the on was called and down they all came. Alas! Magic had got it wrong and picked up the very trail she had come in on!! She headed home! The rest, clucked and fussed until Captainess Sparrow, looking up to the ridge said, “Ahoy my hearties!! I know that there tree!!” so off they all puffed, back from where Jane so cruelly came. The run was ‘on’ again.

I must confess that the rest is conjecture as we headed back for the beer! Rumour had it that the trail wound up and down past trees and stuff, out and across another road, down into the ‘hutan’ again, down a precipice – how did they do that? Abseiling of course!! And then confusion as paper had been moved. However, help was at hand. This time Juergen came to the rescue and all was well. Everyone soon followed Tango out as she arrived out with third check in her arms!! What some people do to assure themselves of hashit!

Nellie led an instructive shout up – leaving people clear about the whys and wherefores of the hash. Hares were thanked for delicious makan. Pee Wee and Tis Alice for the horns, and Jessica, on becoming a new member, showed us how to down down. Hashit was awarded to Tango as a reward for all her hard work, and Madam Sin for allowing her SMS to buzz!! From there on the night grew fuzzy, not with warm feely things, but due to ice cold wet ones!

1. Tango would pass her driving test. TRUE/FALSE
2. Magic would pass her navigation test at the Brownies. TRUE/FALSE
3. Jane was ‘robbed’ of first check glory. TRUE/FALSE
4. There were ‘men’ on the hash. TRUE/FALSE

RUN NO. 2058

DATE: 29 JANUARY 2008
SITE: Rimba
HARES: Miss Espania, Naj and A’Struth
FRONT HORN: Heather S
BACK HORN: Trailblazer

It was a clear day, no sign of rain, unlike 3 weeks ago, when the whole Rimba area got flooded and we were confined to Naj’s car park.

Getting to the hash was already a story on its own. I tried to leave early from work, just to get stuck at one of the traffic lights in Gadong for over 5 minutes. Finally getting onto the highway, I got stuck in a traffic jam. Wondering what it was all about, only saw some glass on the street and 4 cars parked nearby, but of course everyone had to stop and looook!!!!!!

When I finally arrived at the site, I saw everyone heading off into the jungle.

After rushing to sign in, I started off following yellow paper. Along the road it went, nearly missing the turn into the jungle. As it was fairly good running trails, I was able to join the other hens at first check. Lucky for me it was a back - check found by trailblazer - actually I think it was Alison and Cheryl. (At least I saw her heading off in that direction). So, from being one of the last ones to arrive, I saw myself in the front, but of course not for long.

Further we went through different vegetation, some areas with ferns, some with shrubs, some looking almost like European woods, a few ups and down, but not too strenuous. Second check was a back - check again, not sure, who found it!? Thereafter I lost track of any other checks. I still remember plenty of trips on the trail, some thorns (not too many), some logs and trees blocking the path. We came out after appr. 50 minutes, having had a good workout.

It took a while until everybody was ready for the shout-up; also it was getting quite dark. The hares would get the usual down-down. We had one new guest, Charlotte, who had to leave early. Hopefully she will return next week.

As it was Carol’s Birthday, there was a lot of singing and chanting and finally the “Birthday Song”.

Next we had sad news, Miss Espania, is leaving us. She will stay on in Brunei, but has decided to stop hashing for a while.

No hashit was awarded tonite. Thanks to the hares for the delicious samosas and Mandarin Oranges.

RUN 2057

DATE: 22 Jan 2008
SITE: Upper Diplo HENS: 40 Guests: 2
HARES: Alison/Sue/Cheryl
FRONT HORN: Ready Mix
BACK HORN: Sarah C

Well after playing 18 holes of golf that morning I was pooped so decided I would only walk and take it easy today. Arriving at the site I noticed that the numbers were down and was wondered if it was because of the earlier downpour—not that we had it at Rimba. Personally I love hashing after rain as the jungle is always fresh and smells sweet and the streams are flowing and as well, Diplo is my favourite hash spot.

We set off up the hill this time (which is usually the way we come out) and the trail followed a scenic ridge with glimpses of a distant view. The first check was called right down in the valley. Hmmm! I was sure the “on paper” would continue down the hill as continuing along the same path would take us too far from Diplo itself (that is if we were to come out at the usual place). I committed myself and took the plunge (and unfortunately gave others the benefit of my limited experience and encouraged them to follow). We slid down the hill swinging off trees only to find Carol with a clump of wet check paper in her hand going back up the hill to compare pieces of the check paper with some possible “on paper” she had found. Sure enough Carol started calling ‘ON ON paper” and back up the hill I staggered—feeling embarrassed about the wrong advice I had so willingly given.

We kept going on and on along the ridge and I thought this is a little strange. When are we going to turn back again towards Diplo? I was walking with Madmarg and Debbie and Madmarg soon confessed that she had heard a whisper that it was an A to B. What a treat!. We plodded on but got further behind so I have no idea who found the next checks but was mesmerized by the beautiful jungle and the glimpses of the view. Madmarg said we would join up with her run from the previous week and I started recognizing parts of that run. The mist kept rolling in and out and whilst I likened it to going to heaven Mad Marg suggested it was like the movie “Gorillas in the Mist” and suggested we may find a gorilla around the next corner. Eventually we came out at the Subok water tower (spg 378) and as we were the last 3 out of the jungle the bus had left but we were greeted by the welcome sight of a 4 wheel drive vehicle driven by Alison with Sue beside her. On arriving back at the shout up site I noted that this was the first time I had hashed at Diplo and kept my feet dry.

Back at the sight there were murmurings that no one could read the words as the print was too small. I agreed and made a mental note to fix in future.
The main event of the night was that Alison was celebrating her 800 runs. WOW!!! CONGRATULATIONS ALISON, WELL DONE! You were obviously a “whipper snapper’ when you first came to Brunei.

The shout up went off well this week and in what seemed a little rehearsed the hashit was given to 3 willing members. It was finally settled on Sarah Hill for licking food off her copy of the hash words—I think!.
We were then treated to some delicious soup and some tiny chocolate muffins—great stuff thank you ladies.

RUN 2056

Date: 15 Jan 2008
Hares : Madmarg/Linda
Site: Subok 378
Front Horn : Pee Wee
Back Horn: Naj

Well, this week’s run certainly started on a better note than the last! Not a rain cloud in sight and already 4.30pm Tuesday afternoon and it found me hot footing it out of RIPAS Hospital car park only to draw to a snail’s pace by the general mayhem of zillions of workers all trying to get home at exactly the same time down one very narrow exit road… oh the joys of driving in Brunei.

Not to worry its Tuesday, it’s hash nite, it’s gossip catch up nite and once it’s over the week seems to miraculously go quicker!! Don’t ask me to explain it; it’s just a miracle of life!!

The hens collected on this fine Tuesday afternoon at the bottom of the hated water tower hill so it was going to be up, up and in at the start for definite but what else did the run hold for us, leave it to luck, read the words or ask about. I decided to check out the words which sounded pretty positive until Ah Struth decided to fill us in with what she’d heard from the hare. We should be thankful for these little snippets of info but sometimes its better not knowing and today was one of those times. Madmarg says “Short but horrendous!!” Ah Struth tells us Oh dear and to think today I have no choice but to go round… I have to write the words unfortunately. Could I pass this responsibility to a co-hare? Which promptly reminded me where the hell are my 2 friends when I need them? One severe headache was keeping one away but what about the other, thank the whatever as with a few minutes to spare I spotted Sue’s jeep pull into the site.

5.15 and the hens at different rates of progress attacked the up of the water tower hill could this be the hill mentioned on the words and the rest of the run is downhill?? Could I be being very optimistic, several hens decided I was being far too optimistic and probably a bit unbalanced it was probable the altitude getting to me. Front Horn and the front runners lead us all the way up to the start of the grassy bank and on into the jungle apparently having been proceeded by back horn, is this the correct way of the hash? Was someone going to get the hashit? We all had to wait and see!!

The run led on along the familiar ridge trail bearing left down a slight incline and then sharply banking down to the right of the ridge at a fern bank. We believe now that this is where front horn Pee Wee Claire and Tango Mandy S went wrong with the call of CHECKING being heard, instead they sprinted for out… no not on Subok but at Diplo well done ladies for running your own version of the run. The rest of us although I believe we lost back horn as well at some stage of the run so the rest of the hens minus horns carried on in true tradition to find the on paper which was neatly found by Sarah as the call went up ON BACK we traversed the ridge to drop down very steeply to the left.

It was down, down and more down for several minutes as we all negotiated the tangle of roots, trips and slippery surfaces on our way down to the tranquility of a valley not often seen. We then slipped and struggled our way along the banks of the rivers/streams to a point of crossing and the call for 2nd check. Most of the hens were over the stream searching forward so off I went on back up calling checking in a hope I could be right especially considering the hare’s message from the words of one hill up and one hill down maybe this was going to be the uphill and out. Low and behold I was right. After calling the hens back to paper the hill, and what a hill it was, was vanquished by all as we reappeared on the ridge just leaving a gentle stroll out to the water tower again and the eskies.

A lovely, enjoyable, short but still challenging run well done to the hares, one of whom we found out later was a virgin hare well done Linda.

The two lost souls were picked up from diplo, by a kind chariot I think driven by Carol, I did think having rides from chariots was hashitable but someone smiled on the two poor souls as the hashit was widely spread around the hens during the shout up but never came to lie upon them. The shout up proceeded and had a few high and low points if you want details you just should have been there. 3 guests were introduced sorry I can't remember all their names although I do remember 2 were JIS teachers (1 of whom is called Jill I know that because she's my son's teacher) and one a parent of kids at JIS married to a loan service guy, see I was paying some attention to the shout up and not just dobbing people in it for the hashit, Tina was introduced as a new member, great to see new faces, lets hope they all come back.
The hashit having been with several people was finally awarded or was it accepted by Sarah (JM) and Smurf well taken ladies in the true spirit of the hash.

The shout up was followed by the delicious food kindly supplied by the hares thanks again ladies while the food was chewed over so were many discussions on the pros and cons of the new ideas introduced by the new mismanagement, comments are always listened to keep them coming, at least they stirred the hash up!!

Front Horn: Jan Murphy

Back Horn: Jan Murphy

Hens: 28 Chicks: 1

Another memorable Hash night!

With a heavy down pour at 4.30pm it was always going to be a very wet Hash. The Hares had put a lot of effort in to making a new trail tonight but to no avail as there was no run due to the very heavy rain that continued for quite some time. It would be the first time I can recall that we have never done a run in the jungle due to the weather conditions. It ended up that a few crazy hares were lead around the Rimba compound by Jan Murphy. They were brave people to run in the heavy rain as there were thunderstorms around ….. Quite scary! It was the first time that Jan had been the front horn and back horn on the same night.

We all gathered under Naj’s garage basement - the safest place until the power went off so we headed to the other side of Rimba to Ruth’s basement. Everyone was in high spirits at the shout up and we bid farewell to Karen who is off to NZ, and thanked the hares for the food. Legally Blond got her first warning about talking during the shout up so beware, if you talk during the shout up it will be a Hashit offence, which I must remember as well.

Not long after the shout was over the drains started to over flow at the basement entrance and the garage started to fill up with water. Naj was trying to get us altogether for a few photos and she talked Phil, Ruth’s other half into taking a few photos before he headed out for the night. We took a bit of time getting organized and by then Phil had to stand on the chair to avoid getting his trousers and shoes wet! The water was coming in quite rapidly by then and at the end of the photo session a few ladies carried Phil to his car. Lucky Boy! So again we moved, back over to Naj’s basement to dryer land……where we ended the evening - what a wet wet wet night.

RUN NO. 2054

DATE: 1 January 2008
SITE: Lucky Gardens
HARES: Jane Woolley/Angela
FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Trailblazer
HENS: 26 Guests: 2

The front horn blasted off at 5.13pm for the start of the New Years run.
We sloshed through the mud where the tent was set up and some strolled while others ran full of energy—obviously keen to sweat out all that over indulgence from the last week and New Year’s Eve!!

After a few streams and waddling across gingerly in our hash shoes on slippery logs! we passed Glamour who found the first check but Ah Struth was unaware of this as she ran off up the hill with Naj looking for the first check. Late starters Julie-ann and Rosie ran past us all trying to catch up with the FRBs (Front Running B……..s).
Ah Struth was missing in action so we called her back and it was on on paper again.
Madmarg was behind us talking but she soon disappeared also—she knew where the short cut was and took a leftie and was back at the tent all clean and pristine by the time we straggled out.

We went uphill and down dale on a well worn track except when yours truly managed to find the only bit of slippery mud and down I went!!! Well mud is good for your complexion, don't know about you’re a…...e though!!!
Second check found by front horn Carol.

Thought we were on our way out at 6.15pm but we were led up the Lucky Garden path by the false sign with the word OUT and the arrow sign. It was dark by now so our torches were needed. Voices from the tent could be heard so knew the end was near.
JM Sarah back from holidays presided over the shout up and thanked the hares for setting the run and introduced two returning hashers, Kate and Fiona. Returning hasher Fiona was given a down down and sculled it in one hit like a true hasher.
Thanks to the hares for the Gin and Tonics and delicious samosas.
It was a great run to ease us into the new year.

No hashit this week. Next week is Karen McFarlane’s last run before returning the NZs workforce!!

RUN NO. 2053
DATE: 25 DECEMBER 2007
SITE: Serasa Yacht Club (Christmas Day)
HARES: Emergency Committee
FRONT HORN: Glamour
BACK HORN: Readymix
HENS: 11 Hens 4 Roosters

Well it was a motley group of 11 very merry and slightly intoxicated hens and 4 guests that congregated in the pool at the Yacht Club for the Christmas day run.
After many champagnes and the sumptuous feast put on by Reggie and the merry band at the Yacht Club my major concern was that I may sink if I got into the pool or even worse could be embarrass myself as I was rescued by people who were even more merry than myself. After seriously considering the fact that the pool was only shoulder deep I decided I would take the plunge . And what a “bevy of beauty” we were as we floated around in our cozies with drinks held high.

At 5.15 the horn promptly sounded and we all quickly emerged from the pool to grab our shoes (no spikes needed today). With the promise of a fairly short run the front horn was given to Glamour and the back horn to Readymix.

We set off the around the swimming pool and quickly came upon the first check which was found in an instant by Trailblazer. Around to the other side of the pool Naj found the next check. I think the whole run was completed in 10 mins and even after copious quantities of wine and champagne we agreed we need more. Yes More!!!!!!!

The call was made to run to the end of the point, (don't know what it is called) so we all agreed and took off down the road. I started running but found that after a few meters the champagne got the better of me and I slowed to a walk. The road and parks on the side of the road were full of picnickers and motorists and I found this interesting as I had not been down this road before and have always wondered why there is so much traffic continually going past the Yacht Club. The run could have been scenic and interesting except for the amazing amounts of rubbish that was littered everywhere. The nice part was that many of the people we passed were yelling out “Merry Christmas” which was a nice twist.

The shout up then followed with 4 guests, (being all spouses) being introduced and given a down down —my husband being one. “Tell us why you are here” asked readymix and he answers “because I do as I am told”. HHHMMMM! The all enjoyed a cooling green beverage for the down down followed by another swim.

Jan Murphy admitted that she forgot to bring the hashit so willingly claimed that she should be awarded it a second week in a row for this oversight.
We all adjourned to pool again and a few more beverages were consumed before adjourning to the next party. Ah Struth ON ON

DATE: 18 DEC 2007
SITE: Morley Movers
HARES: Mardmarg & Never Wrong
FRONT HORN: Misfit (returning hasher)
BACK HORN: Ah Struth
HENS: 26 Hens 5 Chicks

There I was once again caught up in the usual slow driving competition . There was a procession of square box type cars that closely resembled potting sheds on wheels—the type we find in the back yard of your grandparents house.

Anyway it was to be Madmarg’s 250th run so it was a run not be missed.– unlike the run of the previous weeks which had everyone talking for its tropical downpour and treacherous slippery slopes.

I was given the job of backhorn so took off up the hill toward the reservoir and into the jungle. Only about 10 mins later when we came to an abrupt halt with much fussing and concern. A biggish fat green snake had coiled itself in the middle of the track and was not going to budge even though 30 women were yelling and gesticulating at close proximity. I had seen this type of snake before and felt sure it was a pit viper—and confirmed it later after checking on the internet.
I was getting concerned that we were spending too much time here as it was overcast and daylight hours would be short. Eventually after much deliberating about alternate routes around the snake, it was on on again. I was with Naj towards the back when she heard the first check being called and she took off to the right along a track. I thought this path was a dead give away as quite a bit of bracken fern had been cut that day and sure enough Naj was soon calling the On On paper.
With the absence of the front horn I stood on the paper and tooted my horn for all it was worth until the front runners caught up. I was told by Readymix to wait for Magic Roundabout as she had gone off a long way ahead looking for the paper. I was nearly ready to give up when magic appeared and we carried on together for the rest of the run.

I believe that Norma found the second check but by now was too far back to be sure. It was a welcome sight to see the road up ahead after a fairly short run we emerged from the jungle as it looked as it was about to rain and so it did.

The shoutup was lively and we toasted Madmarg and Neverwrong for the great run and also celebrated Mad Margs 250th run and returning hasher and front runner Misfit. (Trailblazer tried to give the hashit back to MadMarg as she had a blonde or "red" hair moment as she had told one of the hashers that the run was at Mata-Mata, instead of oh, where was it Marg she was setting the run herself? Well they all sound the same and start with M& M - but the jury voted! and Jan M got the hashit for the ultimate hash sin of forgetting to sign out.)

Delicious Pizzas arrived by a poor unfortunate pizza delivery boy who was swamped by the semi naked and smelly ladies. The rain continued to fall which created a nice ambience as we solved the worlds problems under the tent. On On (Scribe: Struth)

RUN NO. 2051

DATE: 11 Dec 2007
SITE: Subok 67
HARES: Trailblazer/Trish
FRONT HORN: Kathy
BACK HORN: Karen Mc
HENS: 21

There was a small gathering tonight as most hashers had headed off for the Christmas Break.

The horn went and off the ladies headed in to the jungle. I was still getting my footwear sorted out as I had left my good shoes behind, but in hindsight it was Just as well with all the mud, glorious mud we were going to encounter along the trail!

I ended up at the back of the pack until I reached first check when at this point a few hens decided to turn back what a wise decision that was. First check was found by Tango down the ridge. The rest of the ladies continued down the hill and across some flat land when Amanda decided to take a slightly different route and landed in the mud up to her knees which would have been a good camera moment. At this point everyone was in good spirit and we were on a very nice trail headed now down the valley when the wind started to pick up and then within minutes the heavens opened and it started to rain …..Rain …. Then it pored down!

We were just over half way at this point so there was no going back. We continued along the trail which was fine until we started to go up the first hill which was very slippery and that when Nancy lost her footing and started sliding down the bank, she was very lucky there were a few trees around that stopped her going to the bottom of the valley. Between Alice in Wonderland, Nancy and myself we were covered from front to back in mud with all the slip sliding up and down the hills. Towards the end of the run Trish & Karen came in looking for us - what a relief to know we were nearly out of the jungle in one piece. . It was a marathon mud hash. Thank you hares for a memorable run.

*The less adventurous hashers gathered huddled under umbrellas hoping our cars would not get bogged and planned our best routes home in case of flooding. All the while the hares were looking for lights hoping hashers would be out soon.
The hashit went to Trailblazer and Trish for forgetting a H3 sign last week. And a double for Trailblazer and Alice in Wonderland for leaving their towels in the jungle.

BACK HORN: Alice in Wonderland

We all wondered if the run was safe as we heard Dizzy was somehow involved in laying the run, but on the other hand Sarong was there to oversee matters. So we all started eagerly as front horn was sounded at 5.15 in between maneuvering cars so that the truck that had arrived with the tent could go thru.
We soon found ourselves going up, up and up and 1st check back was called. The next two checks were found quickly forward but the last check had everyone checking for a good 20 minutes. Alas, it was a back check and once found we were all soon on the way again. We found Glamour ahead near the last hill, well done, she has managed to go round.

As promised it was a bit of up and bit of down and some around!!
Pussy Pelmet ran thru the jungle with the bells jingling, this being her last run and week in the “Abode of Peace” - all the best Karen & Roger as they settle back in their home in the UK. I am sure you will remember us on those cold Tuesday evenings.

Alice in Wonderland introduced herself as Hash Cash so everyone will know who to pay their subs and claim for their payments!

Madmarg and Legally Blonde were busy talking (in the front row) and the JMs and the coup gave Madmarg no mercy as she graciously took the hashit gingerly vowing to give it away the following week.

Thanks to hares for providing the chilli, as there was a shortage of utensils, some primitive leaning was implemented and very interesting to see what you can do with a few plastic cups.

The horn sounded and off we headed down the road, it didn’t seem very long before we came to the first check.  I went checking on ahead, then re-evaluated turned a 180 and went checking back, convinced by Alice in Wonderland to head forward again off I went checking yet again, it was naturally called ON BACK!  Check found by Cheryl & Alison. (Cheryl called the back horn thru—wow we got there before the front runners—what a cheeky check, but being experienced hashers, Alison and Cheryl knew there was no other way!!. Ed) Hey I needed the extra distance and luckily there was no climbing involved!
On up we went, and up, and up.  As the hill got higher the chatting became quite limited, any remaining breath was used for the usual questions “who laid this?”, “did it say it was a short run?”, “do we believe these particular hares would lay a short run?”, “is their and our opinion on a short run the same?”, and on up we kept going and panting.
Once we reached the ridge the views of Serasa and the port were fantastic, the hill was strangely forgotten (amazing how that happens), and breath and banter returned.  After that all I can remember is the lovely tootle downwards and chatter, chatter, chatter.
Mud, thorns, hills and the weekly catch up chatter, what more could anyone ask for!
Thank you very much for a fantastic run, and no it wasn’t too long.
As for who found the checks, I have no idea I was to busy coping with the hill at the beginning and everything there after is a bit hazy.
(Next check was found by Sarah B (our new JM) ed.)
Welcome to the new committee, Nellie and Sarah well done on your first true hash shout up of the new hashing year, I just sorry I couldn’t be there for it but I’m sure it went well.  Good luck for the coming year, and give as good as you get!

Our Founders Day Run. The big event of the year. Our last run of the year! Next week a new hashing year begins, with a new committee.
We all gathered at the Royal Brunei Yacht Club under grey skies, to sign in. The tent was up, and decorations laid out for the night’s festivities.
It was to be a run with a difference, befitting our last run for the year. , no one wanted to be lost in the jungle. Our first clue was laid out for us at the sign in board. NO PAPER! We had to follow clues and work for our dinner.
A cryptic turn south which had some of the hares a bit puzzled, but turned out to be easy, just follow the front runners, if they were wrong, we all were wrong, then we were each given a plastic bag and had to collect rubbish, one plastic bottle, one can etc, an easy task as these items were in abundance before moving on to the next clue involving dragon boats, we passed that test then around the lollipop and a sprint home, keeping an eye out for a survivor and a sunset, both easily spotted then back to the yacht club to look for a tree with purple and pink flowers. All done, then a quick shower and all the beach belles gathered for the evening’s entertainment.

Prizes were given for best beach girls, taken by Alison and Cheryl. No contest, who could beat the frilly knickers, shower caps, rugs, sustenance and wind break that one must need for a day at the beach in Brighton.
We then had the year’s awards. Guess who got the perpetual trophy for most hashsits of the year, Linda G, again no contest. Longest run, shortest run, most runs, taken by Yann and Mad Marg. We welcomed a returning hasher from Singapore, Vigi who came just for Founders day.

After a sumptuous al fresco dinner the final work of the evening. The changeover of old committee to new committee, and a thank you to the old girls for a year’s hard work. At this stage we realized that our old J.M, Naj was not going to go quietly and a bit of push and pull ensued before the microphone was relinquished and our new J.M.s Nellie and Sarah B. could take over. Sorry Naj, we have enjoyed hassling you all year.
After the changeover the fun could begin with D.J. Martin at the controls.
A bit of “limbo some more” started the party and got the ball rolling, then it was dancing, swimming, dancing, swimming for the rest of the evening. Some of the swimming was involuntary!

A lovely Founders Day. Thank you committee.

BACK HORN: JANE (WITH ASSISTANCE FROM TRAILBLAZER)

For some reason, many of us gathered early for this run; the impending excitement was just too much, we were chomping at the bit. After several pleas for a front horn were unsuccessful, I volunteered giving Carol and Mad Marg a rest. 5.15 on the dot, I sounded it and off we ran, down the road and right at the bottom whereupon we headed into the jungle. The track in was wet and swampy, and a lot of pieces of bamboo on the ground made this all the more difficult, as we slid and tripped our way in. The paper led us up into familiar territory, and after a bit of a run, we met the first check. I stood calling as Running Bare and Kathie went to the left and Lee and Carol went off to the right. This left everyone else to check back. I was calling for a long time, wondering what was happening, only to realise the check had been called on back, but sadly the sound of diggers and lorries and other means of jungle destruction obscured the calling. So as front horn I quickly became back horn, Jane thankfully did a sterling job in my place.

The on paper led us up a fairly steep track and through more jungle, this was quite good for running. And everyone had been bunched together by the first check, which is always good. Second check was called and laid through before I got there. We then came out onto more open ground, again good for running. Across and up a bank and onto a path, pretty much at the end of which was 3rd check. A bit of confusion ensued, before it was called on ahead. This took us into the jungle again, which was incredibly trippy, for another 10 minutes or so then up a fairly steep bank by a barbed wire fence, then we came out onto wasteland again. Ahead was a decent expanse of water, and I arrived just in time to see Carol, Running Bare, Trish and Kathie disappearing into a boat. Yes, a BOAT! A quick shufty around the water and it became clear that there was really no way around on foot, so Lee appeared out of the dark and we waited for the next boat trip. The two trusty boat men steadied the boat for us and in we hopped for a very pleasant little taxi across the water.

Upon exiting the taxi, and narrowly avoiding a ‘one foot land – one foot boat’ disaster, we set off for the run in. Again over more wasteland before back via a bit of jungle. A good chance to stretch the legs before the descent back to the house. Everyone came out in good time – a sure sign of a good run! The hares looked after us with some delightful punch, followed by lasagne and a vegetarian pasta dish, with fresh bread and a green salad. Yum! The shout up was routine, hares thanked, horns thanked, Happy Birthday sang, announcements made. And so another happy evening’s hashing was concluded, later by some than others, under the darkened Brunei skies, leaving us all to ponder our outfits for next week’s founders’ day beach party at Serasa, on on!

RUN 2046

DATE: 6 NOVEMBER 2007
SITE: Spg 702 Kota Batu
HARES: Sarong/Ah Struth/Carol
FRONT HORN: Kathy Knell in training under Pussy Pelmet
BACK HORN: Trailblazer

The Hens gathered in the car park of the palatial house at the top of Simpang 702. After a few words exchanged in Malay with the builders it was established we were OK to leave our cars for the duration of the run. The horn sounded at 5.15pm and we set off behind the mansion to find the in-trail, much to the bemusement of our generous builders - they must have wondered what we were all doing! After a steep and slippery climb up into the jungle the pack were on their way. A number of hens decided that this run was going to be a little too adventurous, as we’d had plently of rain during the afternoon leaving the trails extremely wet, muddy and slippery. For the hens that continued we had a fantastic run/walk taking in the beautiful jungle sites along the way.

As we negotiated our way along the slippery narrow paths, taking care not to fall over, the sound of ‘checking from here’ was heard. Jane found the on paper and the hens were called on-back. More precarious paths and plenty of up, up and a bit of down – it’s a good work out for the buttocks and thighs.

Second Check was found at the bottom of the slope to the river and the on-paper called by Helena. As we all cross the river the beautiful waterfall could be seen. Yet more up hill taking in the as we ascended. The huge trees reminded me of the major oak in Sherwood Forest where Robin Hood and his Merry Men were supposed to have hidden! If trees could talk I bet they could tell a good tale. Back up on to the ridge and on-on we went. Time was ticking by and third check was found by Angela. As darkness fell we picked our way through the trail hoping to find the out paper. Just as the noise in the Jungle was becoming deafening – some sort of cricket like insect I am told! The end was in sight. We made our way back down the slippery, muddy, wet path and out!

After the hens were all accounted for, we continued the shout-up at Dizzy’s place just down the road. A warm shower awaited – maybe we could organize this luxury at every hash! After thanking the hares for a great run we then wished our GM happy birthday. Dizzy nearly got a hashit for bringing a man to the hash…..until we realized it was ‘guy’. The Brownies had made him for Bonfire Night and a ceremonial burning took place as we all enjoyed the wonderful food provided by Sarong and Co.
(Cheryl and Alison had reported that they had spotted an animal larger than a rat on the way back on the in/out trail before 1st check. They have since confirmed that it was a moon rat they had sighted. Despite coming out in the dark, all made good time to get to Dizzy’s for on on. Tks for use of your abode! ED)

RUN 2045

DATE: 30 OCTOBER
SITE: Jln Jerudong
HARES: Pee Wee/Trailblazer/Tango
FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Alice in Wonderland
HENS: 37 CHICKS: 1

This weeks run was a later start than normal and in new territory and so it was difficult to guess how long it would take to get to the hash site.  Going via the coastal road seemed to be no problem but those taking Jln Telenai were stuck in traffic for nearly an hour, almost being late for the run.  .  The horn sounded a little after 6 (with Carol being front horn and Alice in Wonderland taking the back horn) and the group of hens soon split, with the front runners at quite a good pace.  To the main road and left and then up the next simpang took us to some pretty spooky areas.  We watched out for ghosts and ghouls in the deserted bungalow and mansion and followed the paper towards the shooting range and jungle area.

First check was positioned behind a tree and all front runners went off checking into the depths of the jungle.  With torches on, the hens slowly checked each trail, only to hear a back call by Sarah to the paper on a mud trail.  Careful to pick up all the paper and lay it through, the front runners were soon at the back of the group catching up with the others.  The mud trail was beautifully lit with candles, glowing a soft orange in the night.  Just as I reached the check, the call from the on paper could be heard in the distance by Trish, following more golden candles.  This trail took us to the start of another simpang, which we followed to the main road and then on back to Nellie’s house.

At the end of the run, the hens soon transformed themselves into a variety of ghouls, monsters, devils and witches.  Once the potatoes arrived, there was as usual a noisy shout up (with the assistance of the laughing pumpkin) and photo opportunity in and around the Halloween décor of the patio and garden.  Best dress ups were awarded to Dizzy, Carol, Rosie and Julie-Anne and Trailblazer went trick or treating.  The scary hens put on a fine spread of hot potatoes, grated cheese, baked beans and salad to end the evening.

RUN NO. 2044

DATE: 23 OCTOBER 2007
SITE: Diplo
HARES: Readymix and Jenni
FRONT HORN: Mad Marg
BACK HORN: Alice in Wonderland
HENS: 44 CHICKS: 2

We all gathered at what must be one of, if not the, most popular hashing sights in Brunei-Muara. Yes, we were at our lovely, trusty, if somewhat weather beaten of late, Diplo. Mad Marg sounded the horn at 5.15 and off we went, into the middle one of the 3 main entrances/exits. This took us down a fair bit, over some very trippy bits, we were also slightly hampered by the culmination of the recent wet weather, which has made some of the trails very difficult to stay upright on. We carried along and found ourselves going up what I think was Indonesia Hill, a check was found at the top – how kind of our Hares – Pussy Pelmet and myself were half way up the hill and decided that we were not going to rush anywhere, but we did make the correct decision to descend. The on-paper was found back, by I cannot remember who. (Tango confirmed that it was Legally Blond)

We continued through the jungle, some decent running trails here for a while, until we reached the second check, whereupon the terrain was awash with tree falls. I went back, but there was nothing to be found, and sure enough the paper was found on-ahead. However, getting there was no easy task. It was clearly called, but we couldn’t see a way through. Eventually we scrambled under trees and branches and had to shimmy across a log, before getting thigh deep in water and back onto dry land. We followed the trail back up a hill, across and down, and before long we found ourselves at the third check. Knowing this was not a long run, we were fairly certain where the check would be, and we were right, on ahead – to which Tango got first. All that was left was a bit of a flat trail before coming up the hill and on out.

As the Hens gathered under a darkening sky, Naj ably led the shout up. The Hares were duly thanked for a short but intense run (I do like those kinds of runs). As were the Horns, Mad Marg and Alice in Wonderland as front and back respectively. The Pulau Tiga committee were very kindly thanked also. Lost towels failed to be claimed, a few announcements were made, and the evening progressed into night, with the usual camaraderie and conviviality, and the usual clutch of Hens! - Pee Wee
(As for words can't think of much other than Cath Doolan found 1st check me 3rd,. I fell backwards into the stream, saw Kay had done the same, lots of water to cross about 40min run  looked like there was good grub, but I left early and was called a BOF( Boring old fart—Tango)

(Thank you hares for the homemade spring rolls and Jumbo seafood and vegetarian pizzas to follow. The birthday cake for Jenni’s 50th birthday was delicious not to mention the inches added to our waistline.
A belated Thank you for the stand-in committee while we were all away at Pulau Tiga. ED)

RUN NO. 2043
DATE: 16 OCT 2007
SITE: DST
HARES: Nellie/Alice & helpers
FRONT HORN: Irene
BACK HORN: Cheryl
HENS: 18

Due to Hari Raya break and Pulau Tiga’s trip, only a handful of us turned up for the run. As far as I can recall this is the smallest clutch. Most of us were earlier than usual.

I arrived at the site at around 5.00 pm and noticed that all the volunteers - the stand-in JM, Judy the survivor, San San; the softies and bins maiden have arrived. The site was properly setup and Jenny; the Hash Cash with her sign in board displayed. Everyone there was waiting eagerly to receive the hens and counting them one by one – 6 then here come Cheryl, Cath, Amanda and then Sarong.
I could see a few cars parked, one of them is Glamour, Veronica Lai sitting on her chair with a sore ankle, sharing with us her shopping experience in Kuala Lumpur and how she got her sore ankle - too much shopping and walking in Kuala Lumpur.
I took the horns from the JM’s basket and Irene volunteered as front horn and Cheryl who was so eager to be the back horn. Irene, Sarong was so eager to run that she sounded the horn at 5:11 pm. She took us down the road near the Power Station and JIS and the first check was called by Cath (Legally Blonde) and Amanda. Knowing that it was a back check, Alison quickly walked towards the power line on the right and called through. Meanwhile, Amanda was very pleased that she got to the first check far ahead of us. Before long, Alison reached the second check and started calling, “Checking from here”. Before that Sarong has been busy racing up and down the hill along the power line towards the left for she was very sure that the hares would bring us to the top of the ridge overlooking the beautiful sea and the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

We were quite reluctant to walk through the puddle of water where the second check was. We were scattered all over and busy checking and before long Sarong sounded the horn and called “On Paper”. We run back and started to climb the little steep hill to the top of the ridge. Once on top of the hill, the scenery was breathtaking with the sun setting and overlooking to the sea, we saw a ship with its beautiful white sail in the middle of the South China Sea. The bracken was serene and golden from the sunrays, and with a slight cool breeze, it turned out to be a rather romantic and enjoyable stroll for the Hens to cherish.
The trail brought us back to the power line and then towards the left that led us to a tarmac road. All of us were out by 6.15 pm. Later we all sat in a small circle and our stand-in JM, Judy the survivor took her command. All went on so smoothly and food was served, courtesy of Alice and Nellie. We talked about dogs and cats. Nellie wanted to know what made a dog vicious. Is it the breed or the master or the environment? But we did not find an answer for her and at 7.30pm we deserted the place and not a trace of our presence was left behind except for some pieces of melting ice.

(The rest of us had a wonderful 4 days 3 nights of hashing experience. The longest apart from the Ballbreaker which had only 3 takers of 16+ km took the front runners 2 hours 9 minutes—Would you blame anyone when these mad men(note—men) started the run at 6.30 a.m.!!! The other longish run gave the World Interhashers a good warm up of around 9.5 km. Karen Palmer was awarded a hash handle of Pussy Pelmet and Roger for his Hashing posterity named Pelmet Peeper. A great time was had by all and lots of elbow bending to go with it. You should see now see the many youthful svelte like figures of all who imbibed in the mud bath with more elbow bending exercises not to mention the aqua aerobics or was it synchronized floating.
Viv thought she would put in some secret training to show the older hashers up but arrived at the ferry terminal with a crutch—alas she had sprained her ankle while at the gym—so she tells us. Equipped with painkillers she hobbled to the Island and by the 2nd evening was already dancing without the crutches—assisted by more elbow bending. I am sure she was glad she did not cancel her trip. On on till the next tour to Pulau Tiga. Thanks to the great committee. ED

RUN NO. 2042

BACK HORN: Discarded

They are Hashers they true blue
They are Hashers true and true
They are Peace-Co so they say
Tried to go to heaven but they went the wrong way! ! ! !

I arrived at the site with ice, pleased with myself as I was early for once. After chit -chatting with Espania and San san and signing in, soon it was time to go in and the horn went. Instead of the usual dashing in by the front runners, Hens gathered round Readymix’s car who was talking to a man. Very quickly a few of us joined in. “No you cannot go through the building site, I have no insurance cover for anybody who might be injured or any damage to the property on the site,” the man was adamantly saying. There was a lot of truth in what he was saying, but the run had already been set, the Hares were still in and Glamour had already gone in.
As the man walked away there seemed to be some confusion, some of the Hares started to run in as they did not quite understand what the man had said. Stop” Readymix called out let’s move to Tungku beach she suggested. A few of us who understood what was going on began to load our cars with the Hash property, Smurf suggested that we go to DST, as it was safer than Tungku beach. By then some of the hens had already run off towards Tungku beach leaving their cars behind.

It took a while to call everyone back to Km 22.5 Coastal Highway and collect their cars to go to DST. I arrived first with one of the guests, but got a bit worried that I had gone to the wrong place since Naj had been saying that we were going to DST near her house. I thought she probably meant Rimba. So I rang Smurf who was still at Km 22.5 waiting for Glamour and the Hares, to confirm that I was at the right site. Soon after me and the guest Trailblazer arrived on the new site then Alison and Cheryl, followed by Sarong. “Let’s have a live run, any one with paper?’ Alison suggested. Sarong who probably is a girl guide produced a roll of toilet paper, and off Alison and Cheryl went laying the run with “Toilet Paper.” through the trails where Alice and I had done the recce for our run. So when everyone arrived at the new site they all followed the Toilet paper. How convenient!

Very exiting indeed and what an experience! Poor Glamour she must have wondered why no one else followed her, let alone the Hares who might have thought that everyone “went the wrong way.” (GM Trailblazer had phone contact with Glamour and verified that she was out)No, in fact, they were going “through and through.” The run went very smoothly with no more mishap, and I am sure everyone enjoyed themselves. Thank you to everyone for their co-operation and Cheryl and Alison for quickly rescuing the situation.

Selamat Hari Raya! especially to our Muslim friends. I hope everyone enjoyed the celebrations over the long weekend.

RUN NO. 2041

RUN NO. 2041
DATE: 2 October
SITE: Subok 378
HARES:Jane/Julia/Angela/Sarah H
44 Hens/2 chicks

After a certain amount of car manoevering and hens attempting to park on the very steep hill slope and once the hens had rested after the walk up the hill to the site, the hens set off at 5 15. Carol on front horn, led the ladies round Nellie's car (which she didn't have time to move and which later flashed its lights angrily after it was moved by Dizzy) and Alice took the back horn which NO other hen had volunteered to do. Our JM " Naj the Nag", commented loudly on the fact that it was a bit of a worry that if no one wanted to do back horn, who would volunteer to take on responsibilities on the committee in November??

So the hens set off up a slippery bank and disappeared into the jungle. Soon the hares appeared in an excited mood having spotted a cat like creature which they could not identify. Indeed Sarah said it was the first animal she had actually seen in all her hashing days. However, Miss Attenborough Woolley later did some research and believes it was a bear cat. The other hens did not have the pleasure of seeing the creature, but were treated to a pretty tough run that "included a bit of everything"; lots of jungle, hills, swamp and a fallen tree to climb over. As it grew darker a mist came in and settled over the area (or was it the Haze? or smoke from the dump?)

Karen (P.P.Palmer) found not one, but 2 checks, namely the 1st and 3rd, and Carol found the 2nd. Many hens came out in the dark , but agreed it was a good run. Once again hares were worried that Linda was still in the jungle as she had yet to sign out. However, her daughter revealed that she had actually GONE HOME! This after having signed in TWO guests. So she remains the holder of the hash shit and it appears she will far out strip Dizzy in the stakes for a Founders day presentation.

Once we had ascertained her whereabouts the shout up proceeded. The hares were toasted and a guest from Poland welcomed. We were then treated to scrumptious rolls by the hares and some nice cold beverages were consumed until the usual site clearers packed up at around 1130.

RUN NO. 2040

DATE: 25 Sep 2007
SITE: Diplo
HARES: Alison/Cheryl/Sue
FRONT HORN: Mad Marg
BACK HORN: Julia
HENS: 40 CHICKS: 1 (who left early)
The hens assembled on a dry afternoon at the edge of Diplo. I was greeted by Dizzy, returned from her holiday, with some choices of words and a declaration that she had no hash shoes. Need we say more!
We set off at the sound of the horn and went in along Bill’s ridge. There were lots of logs to trip over which we each did in turn and then we went off to the left of the ridge, weaving down along a less familiar trail. We found some boggy patches and the odd challenging bridge around the time of the first check. This was found by Running Bare who checked back and over the river. We were in a valley at this point not far from the dual carriageway and the hum of traffic. It was very pleasant going along beside the running water. Not for long though, we soon had to face the challenge of the big hill.
We were taken up there at 2nd check which was found by front runner Carol. Up and up we went until nearly at the top (which is now covered with fallen trees) we went around the summit and joined more familiar trails heading back towards the ridge at the start. Not so quickly though, we had to head out along the short cut route for walkie talkies and we were soon down again in the thick of the Diplo trails. So many routes are now covered by fallen trees that we were constantly ducking under and watching our heads. I was now chatting with ex student Serene and have no idea where the 3rd check was exactly but it was found by Legally Blond going right and over the river. Before long we were down beside the creek and heading out up and up we went to reach the much needed 100 Plus.
Various achievements were celebrated at the shout up. The Hares were thanked for their excellent run (including Molly who was spotted as we went in). Smurf was awarded a verbal prize for the excellent way in which she put together a worksheet from pieces of hash paper. Bettina and Jane celebrated birthdays this month (both are still over 18) and Dizzy wanted a beer to celebrate something or other (not given!). Sarong hoped to be reunited with a lost bum bag (no such luck) and a “stolen water bottle” was returned to Legally Blond to go back to the swimming pool. Mad Marg is selling Christmas cards (a calendar will appear shortly) and Smurf hopes that we will all celebrate with the St Andrews Society at the ball in October. There are still places to be filled for Pulau Tiga. The merry making closed and we all enjoyed the lovely chilli, bread and salad prepared by the hares. Many thanks.

RUN NO. 2039

DATE: 18 Sep 2007
SITE: Tanjung Bunut Kanan
HARES: Legally Blond & Mad Marg
FRONT HORN: Claire
BACK HORN: Struth
HENS: 40
CHICKS: 8
CELEBRATION: 150 RUNS: Legally Blond

As I tried to find a suitable parking spot, having arrived too late to nab a park inside the “Salziela Garden Estate” (or Sleazy gardens for short), I realised we had been here a year or so ago, but it turned out the trails were quite different. The on site was rather more impressive than the usual, with swimming pool and extensive entertaining area.

Claire was rearing to go when she sounded the horn at 5.13pm, by my watch anyway. We soon got onto a long dirt trail of red clay which became more and more like a 4WD track by the time first check was called. Glamour had been off checking and Carol thought it must be a back check because there were only 4 pieces of paper on the check. Sure enough, the back check was found by Karen and we headed on down a lovely jungle trail which followed a ridge and opened out onto a nice viewpoint.

Just as we got to the bottom of the hill, the call of “checking ahead” was heard. There were trails left and right as you hit a stream and I could already hear people checking across the stream. I checked left, but of course, the on paper was found right by Sarah. After a nice cool stream crossing, there was a muddier section. Amanda was doing her best to trip up in some vines and wondered what lurked in the muddy waters just as she stepped into a knee deep muddy hole.

Shrieks were heard ahead and just as I came to a fairly steep down bit, Karen had twisted her ankle and was being helped along by several fellow hashers. After a boggy bit and a log crossing, the trail became easier, following the stream and going through a bamboo grove. It was starting to get rather gloomy under the trees and it was only 6.10pm. More bog and scrambly bits, but the mud was nicely washed off in a lovely clear, deep pool. Amanda declared this must surely be the last stream to cross, but we waded our way through at least 3 more.

I was too far back for third check and could only hear the horn in the distance, but apparently Irene did a great job of calling everyone through. After an open bit and some more bamboo, the trail led us on out through fern to the sound of swamp hens, then back onto the road at a large culvert.

We all congregated back at Cath’s place, some taking a cooling dip in the pool, some entering the fashion stakes (Naj and Running Bare) and others just trying to wash off the mud. The bar was well stocked with G & T’s and once Karen got her foot strapped with ice, it was time for the shout up. The hares were duly thanked for a great run in new territory. First time guests were called up (but actually all 3 had hashed once or twice before) – Jane, Alison from the US embassy and Cathy, who works in the army. Legally Blond was given her down down for 150 runs, Naj gave a parking demo on how not to leave your rear end sticking out, Smurf tried to sell the last places for the Tiga hash and tickets for the St Andrew’s ball and Mad Marg enthusiastically tried to sell her wares from the hash shop. Thank you to the hares for the lovely samosa’s and chocolate cake. Naj insisted on a photo shoot and then everyone was left to relax for the rest of the evening.

RUN NO. 2038

Date: 11th Sept 2007
Site: Mata Mata
Front Horn: Sarong
Back Horn: Jenny
First Time Guests: Three

There was a bit of confusion as to where the Hash site was, as a few of us went around the roundabout at Mata Mata a few times looking for a second sign, as the small sign was upside down but it was soon sorted. Thanks to Naj for putting the big H3 sign to the end of the road.
It was a nice cool evening, which is a bonus when we have a very adventurous Hash ahead of us. The pack set off in good spirits, I went 100 metre along the trail then turned back as I had forgotten to sign IN, a hashitable offence!! I eventually caught up to the back of the pack and then it wasn't long before I could hear “Checking from here!” It took some time before the first check was called by Sue, a back check. We continued winding our way through the jungle for a while until we got to the first waterfall which slowed everyone up; with a nice rope to support us go down the hill. Once at the bottom we got back on to a nice running trail before getting our feet wet a few times crossing back and forth through the streams.

Second check was called, not sure who found it, but a few of us kept going in the wrong direction as we checked. We then got back on to a nice trail for a while before third check was called. Ready Mix had seen a trail across the stream and it paid off as she found the check. We then worked our way steadily up the side of the hill with once again the support of rope to pull us up, but there were still a few more hills in store of us. It felt like we were climbing Mt Kinabalu, it was one of those hills that kept going up, up, up, up! Eventually we made it to the top for which we were rewarded with a lovely view looking back on the canopy of the jungle.

We had one more check and by this time darkness was slowly setting in, Jan found fourth check and then wasn't long before we were out. It was a very enjoyable run so Thank You Sid and Hubby for showing us the two waterfalls that Ah Struth and I have wanting to find for ages. Thanks for the great Kebabs!
PS: missed on last weeks words: Naj must be thanked for the time and effort she put into the book markers presented to the cast and crew.

A large cast gathered at the main Bollywood site in Brunei. The two directors prepared to instruct actors thru stage directions cunningly concealed on long paper strips. It was obvious that the main director had a strong interest in the environment as actors were guided by use of recycled paper which would soon break down under the elements. The scenery made great use of natural assets available on site, incorporating rivers and stream crossings, unnaturally high hills and sufficient mud to keep the audience intrigued. Natural props were favoured with the occasional log being available to help performers avoid getting their costumes wet. The wardrobe department were particularly appreciative of this.

The plot followed the usual Bollywood line with extras and stars all following the hash trail until a check was reached. It was at that point that the audience could distinguish the leading roles from the rest of the cast as their performance enabled them to stand out. The first performer to reach these heady heights of success was Tiga who located and called first check with considerable aplomb. The next to offer a stirling performance was Rosie who located second check on the far side of a raging torrent and made the most of this filming opportunity by wading across the deepest part to call the check. The camera crew got some very good shots of that. The third cameo was performed by Sid who following advice from Mad Marg found the third check. Interestingly Mad Marg chose not to act on this occasion, but to direct through use of the front horn. Her performance was such that audiences hope that she will continue to provide this skill.

Trailblazer also chose a directing role and assiduously used the back horn to support stage directions from Mad Marg. Keen to develop talents in the masses, Trailblazer took Julia as understudy.

After the hash crew and cast had a celebration film launching As only Bollywood performers can. Black Beauty and Sarong were thanked for their original and thoughtful plot twists in the story line, particularly during scenes involving checks. The food provided was outstanding and the chorus girls looked beautiful in their colourful Bollywood garb. (Cowgirl did not want to be left out and was party to the catering – Thanks ladies for some delicious food. Ed)
Survivor was a gracious hostess and was both complimented and complemented by her leading man when he arrived late in the evening. Naj received an award for 400 performances while Annick made a guest appearance after a long time out of the industry. Naj must be thanked for the time and effort she put into the bookmarks presented to cast and crew.

And so the curtain fell on another very special Brunei hashing event, performed Bollywood style.
