RUN 2013
Date: 20 March 2007
Site: Salambigar Link, Sg Akar
Hares: Dizzy/Jenny
New Member: Julie
A small but select group of runners set off to the sound of Naj’s pretend horn at 5.15 last Tuesday. I hadn’t been at this site before and had a few problems finding it in the first instance, (and getting my leg over the fence. Long, graceful legs don’t seem to run in my family. If you’ll pardon the pun!) - but here I was sitting with Naj having a chat and waiting for the ladies to come back out of the jungle. Then Trailblazer appeared and said she had heard from the hares and they couldn’t find their way out! However, all was well and eventually Dizzy and Jenny made an appearance.
Every time Alison and I plan to do a hash something always happens and sure enough the fates had been working against us. Alison had a sore leg after a fall at Lucky Gardens and I had this blooming chest infection. However, we needed to do the words and our co-hare Sue was on Pulau Tiga, so gallantly, sore leg and all, Alison set off to do her best.
We would like to report that it was a ‘very nice hash’ with a bit of up, down and across.
The checks were found by Cath, Karen and Clare (twice!)
Dizzy told me that she and Jenny had rec’ced three times for this hash and each time they had come out at a different location! I think it is a blooming miracle that anyone can find their way around in the jungle. It all looks the same to me!
The shout up was a civilized affair with the hares being thanked, no horns to thank because there were no horns. A new member of the Ladies Hash, Julie was presented with the rules of the hash. I can’t remember if there were any announcements! No hash shit was given or received.
The hares provided delicious food for everyone. Thanks for the food and laying the run girls.
Alison and I set off early to pick up the hash signs. That was not quite as easy as it sounds. We had to risk life and limb to rescue them from traffic islands on the highway. My goodness, the traffic travels at the speed of sound down that road!

Well done to Glamour and Veronica. They completed the run, found all the checks and left the paper in impeccable order so that the rest of us could enjoy it too. Furthermore, hashers came out within about 10 minutes of each other which is another sign of a well laid run (and good checks—ed). And the third is that I found my first check after three years of hashing, so very well done hares.
Front runners set off at a fine pace as usual but were well stumped at the first check. I arrived to find a gaggle of clucking hens all standing around vacantly and asking each other where the check was. No no no.
Girls this is not the idea, it will not be found that way. A further stroll in any direction is all it takes. Sue Johnson got us going again, down hill all the way and along a bit to second check. Don't know who found that one.(Sorry to whoever it was. I know the thrill it would give you to see your name in print, well, I do now.) Past some thorny things and some bushy things, both with rather nice leaves, and also some of those razor leaves that I always think would make a rather good ash tray - Ahh times gone past me thinks…
Anyway I picked some up and spent the rest of the run being scratched to death, and goodness knows why I bothered as they are still in Fiona's boot, (she's Heather's car).
Third check was over the stream and on a bit and boy, was that an achievement to find, an incredibly difficult check I might say. (Except for the two seniors who actually spotted the footprints….. And the artificial implants! - ED) A gentle trot by a stream is always a rather pleasant thing to do, (especially when you are in the lead,) even if it does come to an end when the paper stops.
Fourth check was a bit of a give away, as an indiscrete five bar gate had been erected across a rather obvious trail. A bit of a clue I felt. Needless to say, fourth check was also found by me.
The shout up was at Mandy's with excellent food to feed the hungry hens. Judging by the amount of jacket potatoes the 5000 were obviously expected but I thought we made a very respectable dint.
Well done hares and thanks.
(The advice of taking a phone is to be heeded as yours truly being backhorn was not too much of a help as got hopelessly lost at first check and could not hear nor find the pack—this is where calling is important for those who have gone off checking—I should have tied Jenny’s hand to mine so we would be checking together—another hint for checking always go in pairs. As I did not have my phone for the first time ever! I was determined not to live up to my hashhandle again—I followed the stream for a while and found some old paper and came out just before the 1st runner came out. I came out by the power substation where we last started the hash from.– Ed)

RUN NO. 2011
6 MARCH 2007

HARES: Trailblazer/Tina/Judy
FRONT HORN: Readymix

It’s me again!! Sorry. Late arrival due to ‘contact time’ aka ‘boring waste of time meeting’. Just in time to see the pack head off uphill past the huts and outbuildings of the Lo estate!
As per, the “Three Hashketeers” Madam Sin, Jan M and I headed off following paper, uphill following the rest, who this week, were following….. - paper! Shock! Horror! Lots of trips and cut bits to clamber over as we headed through the bracken with side views of the Singapore Army Camp.
Approaching the top, we could hear lots of shouts and laughing. No. it wasn’t the pack but a group of young foreign workers having an impromptu game of football at their building site. Polite greetings were exchanged. They were ‘malu’ (shy) but informed us a) where the paper was, and b) the way to cut out to J Muara. But being ‘malas’ (lazy) we wished them ‘Selamat tinggal’and returned the way we came.
As we tripped downhill, we were overtaken by the pack which had completed the lollipop and were rushing homeward down the stick! First check was found by Vania and 2nd by Karen P – well done ladies. Mandie noted that the paper was extra big this week and it was very much appreciated because of her short-sightedness!!
A sedate group amassed under the tent for gossip and refreshments. Thanks to front horn Readymix and back Jane W. Many thanks also to the hares, Judy Tina and Yann for a short run and delicious satay. Special thanks to Judy who laid the out trail so expertly. Awards went to Sarah B for 50 runs and greetings were extended to birthday girls Naj and Cath – and so the night progressed. On On!

5.13, and Carol and Running Bare went off for a quick recce. Easily finding paper they tooted us off and hared off in the direction of the road, followed at a more leisurely pace by the pack, followed at an even more sedate stroll by Jan M, Madam Sin and yours truly. After admonishing the security for having lights on in the day, we have since heard the self same lights go off at 8pm!! (a strange insight into power wastage - perhaps we should have informed David Bellamy, we limboed under the barrier and up the old road. Soon we came upon 2 fairly inexperienced hashers who called back “There’s no paper ahead” so they quite correctly joined us on the shredded paper leading clearly up the hill in a leftwards fashion.
It wasn’t long before we heard a lot of huffing and puffing, as well as strange calls and hoots from hashers and horns. What WAS happening? The whole pack then trundled past us mumbling and muttering. Rosemary commented that she had almost been at the top, returned to start and then back up the trail again (a sort of masochistic snakes and ladders I think!) Was it a repeat of last year’s Chinese yew Years Run which got stuffed up by front runners ‘off’ paper. Or was it a misguided New Zealand run, ‘Baa! Baa!’ Get it? The blind leading the blind!! I don’t know what went wrong as the new paper was clear for all to see. But… there were hashers and callers everywhere. Mad Marg was at the bottom of the clearing, on her mobile, trying to contact her mates who had crossed the clearing and headed up the hill, with nary a piece of paper within 400m!Tis Alice was horning from a check on a stick! We heard some strange comments like – “It doesn’t matter if there is no paper we will get there anyway!” Honestly Ladies. I don’t like to carp and moan but… a lot of work is put into laying a run, and it’s not fair to assume the paper will go the same way as last time. Keep your eyes peeled and if there is NO paper or only OLD paper, you are seriously off, so DON’T follow it!! And… learn the rules about calling, important for everyone’s safety.
Luckily, everyone rejoined the lovely clear trail, which I heard continued, and had been strimmed to aid our way. And over to Nellie, who had a VERY successful run, finding 2 checks I hear. (so Nellie promised.. So she can write bout her glory of finding one ... No two ... checks in her 10 years of runnint - but she was so excited about her Myanmar (Burma for the colonials) sojourn with John that she must have run out of time and henswords did not get a peep out of her except whether she should or could take her lap top to Myanmar. Yours truly was on holiday mood as well relaxing at the spit with The yacht club and did not get her message till boarding time! Perhaps she had intended sending me a write up in between transit time in Bangkok!
Third check was found by Karen Mc. The hens were out in good time ready for the CNY on on the Orientals had put on. Tina was busy homecooking the veggies and traditional CNY fayre. The roasted chickens and duck went down a treat as did the Yee Shang as the Hens wished in a prosperous "Pig" year. Thanks ladies. On on!

RUN NO. 2009
Date: 20 February 2007
Site: Km 22.5 coastal highway
Hares: Jan M/Never Wrong
Front Horn: Carol
Back Horn: Ah Struth
1st time guest: Julia
As I drove past the site in the opposite direction, the worry of getting to the site played on my confidence as I had thought I had worked out how to get there not from my usual starting location. After going off two exits and still finding myself going towards Gadong and Muara on the wrong highway, a quick call back to site was needed to give some last minute instructions for the run in case I was late for the start of the run.
To my relief I got there in time to do a few chores and the announcement. The run had been published as "all can go round" so the hens that gathered were raring to go waiting for the fronthorn to start them off. Soon we all took off down the ankle breaking stoney rocky slope towards the beach. Having past some staff quarters, heavy machinery idling we turned right and went along the beach for a while. The landscape on the right had dramatically changed since our last visit to the site and some grass planting and terracing had taken place with not a tree in sight. I noticed a few fishermen at the breakwater trying their hand getting some dinner. Soon the hens had come to a halt as they had struck a ravine, so “checking from here” was heard.
Yours truly was right at the back having started late as usual and on hearing the call amongst the milling of the other hens starting checking at the back and soon found the on “back” following the old trek where we once could drive along albeit more safely with a 4WD vehicle. We soon veered left up the newly planted sloping “lawn” to find ourselves along the mentioned culvert and soon second check was called.
Some braved climbing a bit further up and 2nd check on “forward” was called by yours truly “again” from where the storm drain used to be lined with bushes but now showing bare concrete and broken paths. As we gingerly crossed over the old storm drain and back on to more flat area where one could see recent tracks of huge machineries we soon caught sight of the workmen huts and were soon up the small incline of ankle breaking terrain again back to the tent. The sand had slowed the fast runners and good checks kept us all together and we were all out within the hour.
We welcomed first time guest Julia - a new teacher at ISB. After the shout-up we were treated to delicious “chilli” and vegetarian lasagna homemade by the hares which we thoroughly enjoyed accompanied by bread rolls.
The rain that had stayed off soon arrived and the few diehards stayed till about 9 pm apparently thro some quite stormy rain which we discovered had brought down some trees and lamp posts on the highway when we drove past to go home. Apparently few that had left earlier were caught up at the highway as the trees was right across and they had to wait till it was cleared. I think those who stayed behind had the better option albeit a bit wet and cold! The local rag had reported next morning that one of the buses that we passed parked along the highway had been hit but luckily with little damage and no passengers on board. Thanks hares for a great run and grub.

What’s this??? A barrier across our wonderful Rimba site? Not another site lost, how disappointing, but we were pleasantly surprised by our elegantly decorated underground Den of Lust with hearts and gossamer swags. Oh forget the glamour… we were off at our appointed time onto the black hard land and on into the ever diminishing vegetation. Hornies Karen and Carol took the honkers and we were off. A little climb on hands and knees to get up and in. Around and around, up and down, checking from where??? Checking ahead??? Checking from back??? Now how could that be? Oh for goodness sake Chickies, how are the walkies and talkies ever supposed to figure out which way you had gone? “Checking from here” ONLY if you are standing ON the check please Chicks. Don't forget to lay it through from the check.
Pretty scenery and still some pitcher plants left. Slippy slidey, icky sticky, now was that a hill on the way out or was that a….. great hill. A good workout for the quickies and a lovely walk for the walkies and talkies.
On On with lots of announcements and a lucky draw of Valentine’s Day gifts (thank you generous hares) Hashit finally changed hands, Magi your Valentine’s Day outfit was just asking to be dampened……. buuuuuuuut forgetting to take the hashit bucket home may be cause for another dunking. Yummy cakes for afters, thanks again to our hares.
This weeks run is a walk in the park… well almost finished park we think. Hopefully no ropes will be required and should see you back on site for another trot if you so feel inclined.

RUN NO. 2007
Date: 6 February 2007
Site: Lucky Gardens
Hare: Juergen
Front Horn: Kirstie (now known as “Tiger Bum”
Back Horn: Trailblazer
We started off from a new location for me, LBT Electro Platers at Lucky Gardens. Down the street we went, scrambled over a bulldozed site, and right away came to a steep hill we were promised in the summary of today’s run. After that it was a dry and easy-going path to 1st check. At the check there were several possible trails, but the on paper was found fairly quickly at the top of the hill by one of the frontrunners (later I found out it was Carol, * see below for how I know that).
A short time after, the paper seemed to run out. “Not again!” the hens were moaning, remembering the hash of two weeks’ ago. Some thought that at 1st check we had actually found a different check and were going the wrong way around. Anyway, while we were debating and looking around for paper, someone found more paper on ahead, so off we raced again. Through the scenic jungle, across a bridge, and then we came to a big hill (wait a minute, wait a minute…… didn’t we read somewhere about hills “at the beginning only?”)
At that point the pack got a little separated. I could hear lots of shouting ahead. So there were either lots of checks or exciting things happening in front (I heard later there were “4 or 5 checks.” We arrived at the big open construction clearing and were faced with – guess what – another hill. But that was it, we were out.
At the shout up, we said goodbye to Kirstie, who’s been a faithful and avid hasher, but who’s going home (far, far away – the Hebrides or some such remote place.) Tiger beer and bottoms were discussed, a laminated souvenir of her hash days was presented, and a down down was drunk in her honour.
*The finder of 1st check, Carol, was rewarded by our Honorary Hare Juergen with a pair of skimpy, lacy, sexy, red knickers. She promptly tried them on and modelled them for us and the camera (outside her clothes, I hasten to add, in case anyone reading this will think the Ladies Hash is losing its normally high moral standards!!)
Juergen also spoiled us all by presenting each of us with a little heart. And, to the ladies’ delighted whistles, he did a mini strip tease while he tried on his brand new Ladies Hash hare t-shirt! Thanks to Juergen for the run, the hearts, and the delicious shwarma that followed.

30 January 2007
Site: Kg Mata-Mata
Hares: Madmarg/Kiera
Front Horn: Karen P
Back Horn: Jane
Special Awards: Jan Murphy - 100 runs Sarah H & Karen P - 50 runs
We started in Mata-Mata on time, 5.15 pm and went following the frontrunners into the jungle. We expected a run up the pylon track, but after a short distance we turned right. First it seemed very snug, we had good running-trails, just a bit slippery, but lead in fantastic landscape with big ferns and rare plants. We crossed the stream many times, I stopped counting and I’m not sure, whether it was the same one or different streams each time.
The 1st check was found by Magic Roundabout and was far enough to get the feet wet and muddy. Impressive lush vegetation all the way up and down along the stream made the time to the 2nd check go by quickly. Again it was found by Magic Roundabout. Marvellous, at the last steep hill we were supported by a rope, and climbed up to have a beautiful view over Mata-Mata and the newly built bungalows. Soon we reached the on on-site and were ready for the shout-up.
Down down was given to the hares Madmarg and Kiera. Thank you for the great run!!!• Sarah & Karen P was called up for their 50 runs. Not forgetting Jan Murphy, she got a down-down for her 100 runs, Carol celebrated her birthday. And…..Very sad for all of us, Rosemarie has to go back to U.K. She received a warm fare-well with a down-down. Hope she will be back soon!!
Thanks to the Front-Horn Karen and the Back-Horn Jane. Last but not least, thanks for the revival drinks, the delicious samosas and the cake we all enjoyed.
Speakers corner Diana: “It was wet, slippery and I love the mud!”
Sue: “At least it wasn’t raining.”
Elaine: “Jürgen was so kind to pick up the signs.”
Nellie: “I tried to limp to the 1st check but failed, I think I missed a lovely run.”
Sarah Hill: “Mud, mud glorious mud!!!!”
Karen Palmer. “Opps lost the squidger off the Front-Horn!”
Carol: “Had a bit of a swim.”
Karen McFarlone: “Lovely water and mud to play in.”
Running Bare:” It was scratchy, should wear long trousers.”
Madam Sin: “Should have brought flippers and a snorkel.”
Ah Strewth: “Very enjoyable- very varied – in the jungle – on top of the hill!”
Trailblazer: “More up than down and very wet.”
Kirstie: “Lucky I know how to swim.”
Claire: “Lived up to Hash name, spent a reasonable amount of time on my bottom!!”
Sarah(Bailey): “Very muddy and a lot of streams – good workout!”
Magic Roundabout: “Great run. A cunning start up the pylon-trail, only to have a sharp right turn into the jungle. Wet, muddy, slippery. We crossed 10 streams one time, or one stream 10 times? 1st check, 2nd check was found by yours truly(Me!!!!) An exiting and rare event. 3rd check was found by Claire. A rope was provided at one of the very steep parts, thank you hares, but what about the last bit, my fingernails will never be the same.”
Jan Murphy: “Magnificient views of “Kampong Desperate”!
Great journalism by Gaby. Still some of Mata-Mata left.”

Special Awards: Black Beauty 200 runs.
The very popular Simpang 370-86 was host to this weeks hash, and as a new comer, it certainly was nice to know which way to get to the start location. Many thanks to Sigi for the fine hospitality, we left her comfortable alfresco area and departed through the back gate to the jungle.
What a lovely run, well established paths and paper clearly marking the trails, the first check was far enough into the jungle to be sufficiently warmed up and ready for exercise, we traveled up through the grass and located check number one, it was hard to hear the hens calling the checking for the noise of the heavy duty machinery in operation nearby, we headed up to the ridge line and hit, by surprise what looked like a desert, and the destruction of such beautiful jungle gave way to fallen trees, erosion and read clay piled high, such a sad sight to be had, we climbed our way down the vacant land across the construction site trail and up quickly back up the other side into the jungle.
There was a few bridges to climb across clear streams, check number 2 proved to be a little more of a challenge to locate, with hens going in all directions before finally the ON ON was heard up ahead. Back on the trail again we headed for the next check, I could hear the sound of cars whizzing by and was surprised to see the Mentiri road so close to our path.
The paper abruptly ended before check 3 and the lead pack knew something was not right, it was not long before the pack was all back together and agreed to follow Heather out of the jungle as no paper could be found.
A communication break down resulted in a few hens remaining in the jungle after dark, but thanks to the help of a few, all came out a little weary and ready for the shout up.
Thanks to Sigi, Bettina & Gaby for the scrumptious food- especially the meat loaf that was brought in from Germany!

RUN NO. 2004 - 2000TH CELEBRATION
Run No: 2004
Site: Diplo
Hares: Elaine & Black Beauty
Front Horn: Carol
Back Horn: Dizzy
For the celebrations of our 2000th run, members of all other hashes were invited and some of us brought guests along. Arriving quite late, as usual, there was a big mixed crowd waiting, ready to shoot off into the jungle.
At 5.15pm sharp the horn tooted and on we went following printed paper. As usual for Diplo, we climbed down one of the very steep hills into the nice lush vegetation. When we crossed a big log I knew it was the way to one of the small waterfalls. Until first check it was good running trails, just a bit slippery here and there after all the rain. And then came first check and that never ending hill, up and up and up…… But after walking and puffing heavily we made it and then it went downhill and down and down…..
Don’t ask about the other checks, no clue who actually found them and the whereabouts. Anyway the rest of the run was led through fantastic landscape, we enjoyed the meandering streams (sorry had to look this word up in the dictionary, Elaine) and the lush vegetation, but missed the pitcher plants. Surprisingly we reached the end of the jungle just below the Malaysian High Commissioner’s Residence. Thank you Elaine and Black Beauty, it was a really great run.
It took a while until everybody was ready for the shout-up. What a night of down-downs! After a down- down for the hares, Glamour, one of the co-founders of our hash was called up and Ready Mix was telling us a bit about the start of the hash, not forgetting that Glamour got a down- down. Next, our two JM’s, Naj and Ready Mix, called all the GM’s and JM’s from all the other Brunei Hashes up on stage, who received a warm welcome with a down- down. Maggie and Running Bare celebrated their 100th runs, Carol and Dizzy were front and back horn, Running Bare found first check, a few jokes went through the air and finally Running Bare got rid of her hashit. All in all it was a great and memorable run and evening.

As I drove down the simpang which we fondly used to call kampong Melbourne, and came to the now fading sign in huge letters , “Slow Children Playing” I was reminded of all the old hashers who once live in the simpang: Jill Betts, Rhonda Mclean, Pam Gough, to name a few. Where are they now? And how grown up those children must be! Just as I was awakening from my trip down memory lane, who should I see but the grand dame of hashing herself; no other than Gina Constance . Was my mind playing tricks on me? I certainly am aging, but not that quickly, surely! No, Gina was real and she was back with us for the night, and, as usual, leading the pack.
We headed off down the simpang and over the rough road, past the menagerie of barking hounds to the escarpment, which took us into the jungle. Now at this point, there seemed to be a confusion of various types of paper. Not to worry, we carried on slipping and sliding ‘till checking from here was heard.
I went down a path to the right of the trail and found lots of paper, so called the on.
Many others followed and off we set to the waterfall and camp site.
At this point it got very confusing as we seemed to be on at least three different runs, all with lots of paper. After going up and down several different hashes we made an executive decision at quarter to six to head out, due to impending darkness. By quarter past six we were out and the rest of the hash followed within the hour. Those who completed the run said that it was very nice, so well done to the hares.
The shout up saw down downs for guests, honest hashers, hares and the hashit for Vania. Mad Margaret did a roaring trade in washer woman shoes and the technical side of tonights run was discussed. Thank you to the hares for the yummy laksa.

First run of the year at Diplo, ready to run off the roast turkey, those turkey sandwiches and turkey curry and raring to gae. Looking around for some other front runners I was a little worried that I would be running alone...but how wrong was I. We headed off in the usual direction and doon the path where Kirsty usually slips up on her backside (but not today!), doon and round a bit and then a little bit further, and was soon faced with first check. And you guessed it..it was a back check found very quickly by Tiga. Jane was backhorn and beat me to it as she sounded the on on. Quickly gathering up the paper and laying it through, managed to catch up with the others ready for the second check.
We did a bit of up and a bit of down and across many a burn (with wet feet very early on) until we reached second check. Another back check which was guaranteed because Mad Marg and Tiga had gone together to check ahead. This too was found quite quickly by Elaine and again Jane on back horn beat me to it. Onward and upward, the hash took us to parts of Diplo not ventured for a while. We ran along a ridge and took a right turn which sent us all the way doon to the bottom, some of the others said I'll wait here, just in case it was a sneaky check half way doon the hill, but the paper carried on and on, all of the way and out into an opening and soon the others followed. A clearing in the wids, with the highway in sight at one end.
Some of the intrepid hashers ventured up and down the clearing looking for obvious paths in..towards the highway was a no gae even with lots of mysterious doggy prints, trailblazer followed the clearing far and beyond..no sign frae her. Cud it be another back check, had anyone looked?...or could it be straight ahead in the depths of the jungle. Good job Bini Hutan was out looking as we heard the on on call straight ahead only a few metres up the hill. Up through quite thick jungle we ventured, which soon took us up and out to the back of the clearing where the Hash tent was. The hens pretty much kept together and all were out quite early. We were heavily rewarded at the end of the shout upwith entertainment by Smurf (with yummy prizes) and fantastic home made soup and homemade shortbread.

Hares:Jane
Front Horn: Trish

Runners: 27 hens + 1 chick
The usual long drive after coming off Jalan Muara and over lots of “sleeping policemen” the usual site at the top of the hill was dotted with cars.
We had been warned of a slipper beginning if it had rained—but no rain so far that day. A steady climb up along the waterline that flowed from the top and we gingerly clambered over slipper rocks, some with running water which was soothing to our quickly heated feet.
First check was found ahead by Jenny and the small pack carried on again up through some pretty trails. Once at the top the view was rewarding as we surveyed Serasa for some recognisable landmarks. The 4.30 p.m. ferry from Labuan was spotted so we were up there around 5.45 p.m.!!
Second check took a while to find as it was a sneaky back check which was found by our JM Readymix, as though she was last in was first out. One of the bonuses of being at the end of the pack, as yours truly was 2nd out followed soon by the rest. The track back was down, down, and down and we could soon hear the buzz of those who had taken a short option and was back at the site.
We had been in on the out before and I must say the way round this time was much more easier to the top that the daunting sight of the up, up, and up you see as you start off.
At the shoutup Bini Hutan was welcomed back to the hash after being away since August, and new member Kiera welcomed.
Jane treated us to yummy Indian fare, vegetarian dhal, curry puffs, rotis and rice.
Hashers were reminded of the actual 2000th run next week to bring a plate and dress in pink or purple or both for the on on at DST.—Trailblazer

Driving to the Jerudong area at an early stage of the afternoon, I noticed more and more clouds building up.
Lucky for all of us, the weather was with us when we went off at 5.15pm sharp. Bini Hutan and myself were last in, but caught up with the rest of the group shortly. We past a lake to our right and walked through some open areas and grassy trails, then passed a road and further up it went into pine forest areas, which almost looked like European forests. We went along nice trails and arrived at first check soon after. As Ready Mix announced beforehand, a circle was laid, so everyone new the exact point.
On we went through the forest, at some stage we heard hens shouting for more checks, but were too far behind to even getting involved in the checking. Next we got into the Bukit Shabandar area, familiar to most of us, the ups and downs.
As earlier promised, after climbing a very steep and long hill, we were rewarded with a scenic view of the Empire Hotel, the South China Sea and many of the Shabandar hills.
After enjoying the splendid view for a while and at the same time catching our breath, the trail went downhill through ferns and shrubs (yes, we saw some of the fantastic looking pitcher plants), which at some stage joined up with the in-trail; we were out after a good one-hour exercise.
Once out, we were given a yellow cap, thanks to Ready Mix. (And the Ladies Hash for sponsoring the embroidery).
Food was available plentiful, as everyone brought a plate along, thanks to all, and also thanks for all the “Mixes”, they were great.

I didn’t really want to be at the Boxing Day Hash. After a huge curry lunch followed by a few puds (and Christmas Cake!) and more than one glass of bubbly, I was in no condition to Hash! However, my fellow hare, Alison, had SMS’d from the
1. Go to the hash
2. Pick up the signs
3. Write the words
So I turned up with a humungous hangover.
As the horn sounded we left Sigi’s garden and headed off into the jungle at 370. After the initial horrible hill we were on to familiar paths. I had a lovely chat with the rest of the walkie talkies and took no notice of checks or other such conventions. Elaine found all three checks, well done!
My headache started to get better, although it was replaced with indigestion! Take my advice and NEVER eat Christmas cake before a hash!
We did an almost complete circuit of the 370/Sungai Hanching path before cutting down through the jungle, over a sandy area, up another hill which was accessed over a log which had giant ants patrolling it! Thanks to Sonia at this point who bravely brushed the ants off the log with a leaf! I hate ants! I think I am allergic to their nasty stings!
Then it was up, up, up. Thanks again to Sonia, who should really be called Hawkeye and not Gordon, as she spotted all the paper for me!
Shortly after that we were out.
A grand hash, well done Sigi (aka Bini Hutan) and Bettina.
At the shout up Sigi and Bettina were thanked for laying the hash and providing such a splendid setting for the on-on. We then welcomed first time guests, Gaba, from
Photos were then taken of all the hashers by Honorary Ladies Hasher, Jurgen.
Now, this was already a lovely celebration but it turned into a fantastic night with the arrival of the scrumptious food. Sigi and Bettina had prepared for us - roast turkey with potato dumplings and gravy, spiced red cabbage and stuffing. Yum! This was followed by a fruity pudding with vanilla custard or crème anglais if you want to be posh!
Just when you thought the night could not get any better, Santa Claus and a very sexy Elf (don’t know which was which!!) distributed Christmas presents. You could even request the size you desired and whether batteries were necessary!
After much hilarity, Santa found one more gift at the bottom of the sack and decided to give it to Jurgen. Bettina, who was sitting beside me nearly had a fit as she knew what the gift was! Jurgen removed the paper and found a red g-string, which he bravely modelled!
What a man!
Then the singing began, perhaps not as we know it! Heather knows alternate words to Christmas songs and even a few in Latin! It was very entertaining. (By the way Serunai Singers are always looking for new recruits. See me later!)
I left about 9 so I don’t know how the evening finished. I just know I had a lovely time and want to thank Sigi, Bettina and Jurgen for a night to remember.

Run 1997 - Hanching Baru, Jalan Maura
Front Horn: Carol
Back Horn: Never Wrong
An apprehensive bunch of hens waited anxiously for front horn to sound as words had promised another run that all can go round. A sample of miniature gift boxes were to be found in the jungle and hens were encouraged to find these in exchange for some gooides at the end of the run as it was Magic's birthday celebration run. The on-site was well decked with buntings and even a Fijian flag.
We soon took off round to a clearing and up a bank and surprisingly wet paths we traipsed into the jungle. Up and up we went and first check got a few people stumped. Alas it was a back check which was found by Mad-Marg - rearing to go after her NZ half marathon and in training for the 10km Brunei marathon next weekend.
Once the check was called on the hens continued through the jungle and on through more pretty trails. Next few checks were found after a bit of a running here and there with the hens thinking it might be another tricky check. However, the on was called forward and we were all on our way again. Another incline was encountered before the homeward trail emerged.
A delicious rum punch awaited returning hens to the coup and the on on with new JMs Naj and Readymix soon commenced. Madmarge was given a down down for her generosity i the use of her house for founders day.
A new member Alex James was welcomed and down downs given to birthday hens Magic and Tiga.
