RUN NO. 2336
DATE: 21 MAY 2013
SITE: MATA MATA
HARES: SUE/POSSUM
Being that this weeks run was at Mata Mata I knew I had to get going to get there in time.
It's a long way from Tanah Jambu.
Before we could head off on our run we spent an exiting couple of minutes with hashers looking here,
there and everywhere for the on-paper as we couldn't find it anywhere.
Then all of a sudden we see Glamour and think "aha that's where we should be looking"
but Glamour was on the blue Hetro paper....... In the end Cheryl phoned Possum and we were finally off and on our way, slightly later than the normal 1715.
We ran and ran and ran and it seemed forever before first check, but we found the on pretty quickly
and continue on. The jungle trails were as good as they always are in this area and mixing it up with the fire trails there was no stopping the front runners.
All the checks were found with no drama but the trails just seemed to go on and on,
and i was feeling a bit woozy.
All of a sudden we reach the mark of the two runs splitting and so we commit to continue running another for another 3.7 km..............really??? Hmmm, half way down the hill Speedy Gonzales and myself have a re-think and decide to turn back to Possums waiting bus with refreshments.
Good decision!!!!!! And so thought most of the hens bar a fair few brave ladies who soldiered on and ran back to the tent - well done!!!
We were greeted with Sue's Special Punch which always tastes SO GOOD!
(And you can make it yourself as it's in the "Hash Nosh" 2012.)
It was nice to see Bunny Girl, Legally Blonde and Annabel back and we also welcomed two new guests; Lara from Canada and Rhiannon from Scotland. Hash Whit entertained us on her normal excellent form and will sadly be missed when she leaves this summer. Mother Nurture is also leaving us shortly and pleaded for someone to please take over her "light duties".
IKEA was enjoying herself in Bali so I kept it short and sweet so that we all could enjoy Sue's and Possums lovely Chili with corn on the cob and salad on the side - Yummy!!!!
Thank you ladies!
Next weeks run is a run that everyone can do.
It's not short, it's not long it's just an average run in the Orchard!
Enjoy!!

As I was leaving from
Mata Mata it was raining and the sound of distant thunder didn’t bode well for a
dry hash. But of course that means nothing in Brunei – localised rain can mean
you drive from perfectly dry, through a patch of 200 metres where it is
absolutely hosing down, to instant dry again. It was actually a lovely dry
evening in Sungai Hancing. By the time I had walked to the tent to sign in, I
had heard the words ‘lollipop’ and ‘long’ several times and this was soon backed
up with a notice attached to the sign in board saying ‘1 ¾ hours for middle
walkers, make sure you take a torch’. Not a good start for me, after a few days
of stomach cramps and not eating much – I was just psyched up enough to push
myself around a normal run for the sake of the words, but a long run – forget
it! The ever faithful Trailblazer overheard me saying so and kindly offered to
fill in the middle bits for me. A leisurely amble with Alison sounded much
better.
We set off through
some new housing and soon went past the more familiar Simpang where Cheryl and
Magic Roundabout used to live. The paper led us into the jungle and up a decent
sized hill (for someone with not a lot of energy to spare anyway). The trail
headed right at the top of the hill and after a short way, the sounds of
‘checking from here’ could be heard. We reached the y of the
lollipop, with the ‘in’ sign pointing left and down into the valley, and so to
first check. We chose to walk up the ‘out’ trail for a bit and then turned
around, taking in the sights of some new and very white Mediterranean style
houses along the way. We were greeted with a lovely rainbow as we arrived back
at the on-on site.
The trail through the
jungle was very pleasant and the usual Lucky Garden atmosphere. Some of the new
ones were tricked into thinking they were out when we popped on to the fence
line of the National Security Centre along Salambigar Link. It was not to be, we
were soon back in the jungle, but before long on to the lolly pop.
All the hens were
safely out just on dark and the shout up began, minus JM Ryvita, who was needed
elsewhere. The newly crowned Wonder Woman took the hares away. Two first time
guests, Julie from NZ and Tuti from Indonesia were welcomed. Two new members,
Cath and Rave were also welcomed into our hash family. Dr Zur looked very
pleased with herself as she celebrated her 50th run and remembered
her challenging introductory run at Kota Batu.
Dizzy offered to be
ice queen next week, Sticky Rice gave some notices and Alice in Wonderland still
wants more pencils for her Cambodia trip. JM Ikea invited us all to join her new
and secure hash facebook and admitted to being a numbers geek as she reeled off
all sorts of statistics for our first half year. Hash wit gave us a quick bit of
wit about her good driving and Karlene owned up to needing a refreshing bit of
cold water thrown on her by Dizzy, because she failed to sign out. Delicious
Afghani food was enjoyed by all – spicy but lovely – thank you hares and Smurf
who celebrated her birthday which was the day before.
Next week’s run is in
Possum’s words, ‘not a Possum run.’ There will be a medium and a long run. The
medium run took us 45 minutes walking at walky talky pace through a nice jungle
trail with another 20 minutes of open track to finish. The long run adds on
approximately another 3.7 km of easy to run on, open track, which front runners
should enjoy, but is only meant for those who can run
out.

Greetings fellow Hashettes. Last Tuesday saw us follow the signs off the coast road and down onto the sands of Tungku Beach for our Glow in the Dark Mid Year Hash. After a slight hiccup when we had to drive over to the starting spot on the eastern side of the beach, due to the tent having been erected in the wrong place I believe, enthusiastic Hens milled around eagerly awaiting the signal to flap their wings. Sure enough, 5.15pm saw the departure of the flock off along the scenic beach hash trail. With ladies moving at their desired speed, and many stopping
Receipients of hash handles........
to snap pics of idyllic scenery and action poses, we wended our ways hither and thither until we reached the midway point. To our delight, we were greeted by a friendly sea nymph who offered us a free cool beverage which of course being polite, we could hardly refuse. So joy of joys a hash that provided a beautiful walk or longer run, a spectacular sunset, fine weather, an unusual lack of hills and a drink to keep us going.
On our return the tent was abustle with Hens clucking over the range of scrumdidlyumptious food that was making the tables groan as well as our lovely new t-shirt (many thanks to our Hares) with its slogan on the back proclaiming that we ‘don’t sweat, we sparkle’ – never a truer word was spoken. So although we were licking our lips and hushing our tummies due to the aromas wafting from the table, we quietened down to enjoy the shoutup. We had if I recall correctly a first time guest and a new member welcomed but the highlight of the night was surely the bestowing of names upon four illustrious Hens. Those added to the illustrious roll of Named Hashers were Wonder Woman (Nicki TC), Twinkletoes (Erin), Mother Nurture (Clare) and Mighty Maple (Kim). After this excitement and once the rest of the formalities were concluded (wasn’t there a hashittable sinner in there somewhere?) - Ika for not educating her guest on ethics of hashing - Ed, all lined up to choose from the tempting array of food. So there we sat in the dark as the evening wore on, everyone a-glowing, a-sparkling and a-glittering (including some strategically placed circles on various parts of the anatomy) feeling full and content, enjoying the bonds of friendship once again until with heavy sighs we packed our chairs and bumped slowly up the track towards our homes.

Oh oh oh what a trail.... ( to the tune of oh oh oh what a night)
By golly gosh and jeepers what an enjoyable romp thriugh the jungle we had. (I thought I was gonna die of hyperthermia throughout it but nothing new there).
Just off Jalan Subok the hares took us in and up on a slip sloppery slidey trail up and up and up till we met with a spectacular path. Dry, leafy, wide and clearly present I soon recognised this track as the one leading to Salambigar water hole. "Ah ha" says me, knowledgably, (although not so knowledgable when it comes to spelling as a little squiggly line has come up there and I havn't got a better option) "an A to B" 'tmust surely be yipee yipee" Yipee because last time the little line on my gps sports tracker thingy went straight for that long it finally turned round and we had to go all the way back again, another GI Jane special tramp.xx
Anyway, Hilary got a sore foot, poor HiIls :(, someone found the check(s) Trailblazer was a sweeper, Ryvita and??? were horny and we all toodled back on a bas sewa kas to the start. Back at the 80 years young, Glamour's slick crib where we noshed on top makan, sang hippy barpday, tittered at some comedy and had a lovely pressie each off Glamour, thank you very much Glamour. It lashed it down and we all had to swim home. The End.

Subok 527 they said. Well we all knew what that meant. There would be an up. A big up. Hash words arrived by email the day before and. it was with trepidation that we read, "Bring a torch". This was followed with, "Bring a chair and "Bring an umbrella". Who knew what to expect.
Two runs were provided. Blue paper and white paper. What did they have in common you ask? The same steep ascent at the beginning. It sounds so innocuous put that way. A more accurate description however might be, and here I quote a hasher who completed the course, vertical roller coaster.
White paper swung down behind the pondok leading to a steep, scrabbly, slippery and trippy trail into the remote and little explored waterways behind the Markucing Bukit. There were three checks, two of which were found by Ikea, showing her leadership prowess as JM. Speedy Gonzalez, not to be outdone, found third check on the steep winding path going up to the water tank ridge,
Turning right off the main ridge into a parallel path which met the bracken trail, we headed back to the Markucing track. On-on-up-down and out.
All present were given a lovely shoe holder by the week's major milestone makers: Domestic Godess, Mrs Pingu, Ryvita and Satu Lagi.
Then it was on to the shout up. Thanks were given to the hares: Satu Lagi, Mrs Pingu, Ryvita and Domestic Goddess. Trailblazer was back horn and Dizzy front horn. Melanie from Canada with the military husband was the only guest. Hash ranks were increased with a new member and Black Beauty was welcomed as a returner.
A spectacular number of awards were distributed. Hashers involved had celebrated a total of 1600 runs shared amongst Jenny from the Block, Domestic Goddess,Mrs Pingu, Ryvita, Satu Lagi and Speedy Gonzalez.
An eclectic collection of announcements. Alice in Wonderland asked for donations of pencils erasers and sharpeners for Cambodia. Pyscho provided a rabbit update letting us know that all are fine. Finally a plea was put out for recipes to go in the words.
Then it was time for perhaps the most important notice of them all.
Hash rules before the run:
- Park responsibly.
- Introduce guests and sign them in.
- Listen for special instructions before the run.
- Follow correct paper.
- Take torch and water.
- If you arrive more than 5 mins late turn, back at first check unless you have caught up with the others.
Then we moved on to the light relief. Hash Wit produced her devastating one liners on a range of subjects from work to parachutes, boyfriends etc. no wonder she is such a hot favorite.
Again there was no successful call for the hashit and so we quickly moved on to devour the delicious laksa. Thanks hares.

It was good to get the crowds back together after staggered CFBT and ISB/JIS holidays have meant that many of us had been away and feeling a bit out of condition. Good old Diplo, never lets you down – you can always guarantee a hill or two and getting your feet wet. Well done to Madam Sin for laying the run with her broken ribs and Hot Lips with flu – Words mentioned an hour’s run…hour for who were the questions murmered at the start of the run..so all went in, in anticipation.
Good trails leading us up and down, in and around, through the familiar jungle area of Diplo. Some clever checks laid, but not too clever for the likes of Hannah and Speedy Gonzales. We knew we were near the out trail, once we passed the small concrete post in the floor and front runners were out in half an hour with nearly everyone out by 6 o’clock – all that is except for Rachel and her guest.
Where had they gone? Still on paper but not our paper, they soon realized and turned around in time for the shout up around 7. Reachable by phone meant than no one needed to go and after them. Phew. Wendy’s turn to get wet this week…a reward for bring new guests…a bucket of water thrown..although not with a particularly good aim. Remember hashers..IF YOU ARE BRINGING A GUEST YOU MUST INTRODUCE THEM TO THE JM OR GM. Thank you ladies for the finger food afterwards and thanks Dad for the supply of British jokes to keep the hens entertained week by week.
This weeks run..is laid by some of the front runners in memory of one of our dear front runners – Road Runner (Lee Jefford). A not so long run is promised with Jln Maura being chosen because this area was one of Road Runners old jogging grounds. If you know of any ex ladies hashers who would like to join the run this week, please invite them.

Hashwit with the hashit!
We set off well as the evening was so lovely and as usual with Lucky Gardens we werent disappointed.
All was good until at one point the paper seemed to disappear but being the tru hashers we are we stuck together. We all searched back and forth and after a while our great front runners came back saying they had found the paper again. Phew! we regrouped. After that it was a treat with lovely trails that suited both the runners andwalkie talkiers.
The rest of the trail and run went like a dream and I think we all enjoyed it. Well I did!
The onon was kindly hosted at Erin's and we gathered again revived ourselves with good company and liquid refreshments. The shout up commenced. Our stand in JM's adorned with very interesting Easter bonnets. We had 2 new guests but alas!, the newbie's weren't briefed properly on our down down etiquette and all went wrong. Who was responsible we asked? Poor Hashwit! So, poor hashwit got the hashit! She took it well and Rachel was relieved to hand over the chuk and bucket.
We wish Bini Hutan a happy birthday as she is soon to be away and the German ladies finished the evening by providing some lovely food. Thank you ladies.

Word from Possum went around that the Army was on site when they laid the run in the morning. Also the tent people erected the tent in the wrong spot, but the Army was nice enough to help moving it and this all happened before the run even started. Lucky for us they left the area before we arrived.
As I arrived late from work, I received this report of the run from my co-hare Bini Hutan:
We started the run going through the wooded area near the beach, nice trails with white flowers growing on the side of the trail until we nearly reached the Empire Hotel. Then it went along the beach, climbing the stony wave breakers where we had to be careful not to slip. Along the way we even found a dead turtle. On the way back we saw a family at the beach trying their luck with fishing.
All in all it was a nice and flat run.
We enjoyed a really great sunset on the beach. Due to the school holidays it was only a small group of hens around.
The shout-up started with the usual down-down for the hares, Possum and Never Wrong.
We had one 1st time guest, Veronika from the Czech Republic, who is here until November and hopefully will join us again next week.
Great News, Pee Wee got married last week. Congratulations to you!!!
As this was the Easter Run, the hares gave out Raffle Tickets and the lucky winner gotten themselves some Easter goodies; chocolate Easter eggs were distributed to all the hens, too.
Hash wit gave away her best Easter jokes.
We had quite a few nominees for the Hashit, one of them being me. After much contemplation it was agreed for Rachel to keep it for another week.
Then it was Makan time!!! Delicious Chili Con Carne a la Possum was served with Baguette bread. Yummyyy! Thanks so much, Possum and Never Wrong!

It was a pleasant afternoon with no rain in sight and a gentle breeze. After a false start along the wrong paper we found the correct paper and discovered a few challenging climbs to begin with. The trail was quite long with a few water crossings but the water was clear and cool and there was not too much mud.Ikea found all checks. A very enjoyable run.
The hares gathered for the shout up all dressed in many shades of green to celebrate St Patricks Day. .
There were two first time guests.Urema from Macedonia and Moana from New Zealand.and both said they will be back.
Clover celebrated 150 runs and Sticky Rice celebrated 100 and treated us to some Irish dancing.
It was a night for celebrations as there were March birthdays Ready Mix,Ursula and Wendy and also Psycho's wedding who's beautiful wedding album we were able to view.
We then played Irish bingo and some hens given prizes for their tenuous links to the Emerald Isle.
Of course the hash entertainment had to be Irish jokes told well by Sticky Rice
Rachel was given the hashit for not educating her first time guest in the proper drinking etiquette.
It was a fun and lively shout up even though quite a few were missing due to school holidays

Last week. Oh my goodness I can’t even remember last night. Well it was at Mentiri pipes, but there were no pipes! And no Checks! And no paper! Are you sure you are talking about H3, Sticky Rice, and not some random Supasave trip, I hear you say? To be sure to be sure I am sure. No pipes, no checks and no paper but a jolly good romp in the jungle…ooer… tee hee hee….
Three runs had been laid by our lovely hares but since I ain’t doing three runs in one night just to write these words I will tell you about the long one. On pretty blue ribbons and paint, or was it yellow or pink? It meandered from the highway up, up, up and through and round and down again in super non snakey non crocodile jungly loveliness until we were out. Is that ok?
Then we all toodled round to GI Jane’s pad (not Rachel’s as Rozi was having a doo lally day on the words) and chowed down on “spot on” Vietnamese rolls that we made ourselves, generation game style, after an excellent demonstration by the lovely Mrs Nga.
Everyone got out. No-one got the hashit and that’s it. Happy St. Patrick’s Day xxxxx Sticky Rice.

At 5.15 sharp, the horn sounded and hens set off from Pee Wee's Subok istana. Everyone thought they knew where they were going but the run turned our to be a twist on the usual theme. A quick left as we rushed out the gate instead of the usual right and then it was on through the houses heading for the nearest piece of jungle. Just prior to entering the jungle there was a check to see who was awake. It caught s few of us out but Satu Lagi and Ready Mix were't fooled and headed off in the right direction. Hens were soon in hot pursuit.
Of course everyone who has hashed on Subok knows that at some stage it is necessary to climb onto the ridge and this was our time to reach new heights. Not a figurative expression. Up we went until we were up above the valley and gazing down on some magnificent views, as we strolled along a familiar trail,
The run was a good length and allowed all of us the opportunity to get our heart and legs working to full capacity before it was time to head down to the valley again. Once again hares provided a scenic route and we passed by a lovely looking pool and small waterfall. The thoughtful hares had provided s rope to help us negotiate a last steep slope and then we were back at the sign in board again. Glancing back we saw a beautiful sunset and the jungle silhouette of the ridge we had so recently been walking.
The Shout Up was a busy affair with Pee Wee and Mrs Pingu given enthusiastic thanks for their run. Two first time guests were introduced, one of who'm had been in Brunei for seven years and the other a month. Hash numbers swelled as three new members joined the hash and were given the obligatory rule book. It was announced that Madam Sin had broken some ribs and a card was passed around to sign. GPS had sent a message that she missed us all and then Mrs Pingu told a joke.
In the ensuing laughter we all dispersed for laksa and a bit of a chat with friends. It should be mentioned that the laksa was very tasty and several hashers were overheard asking for the recipe, Thanks hares for feeding us so well.

Well I arrived a tad late, due to the usual traffic encountered on the way to Mata Mata. The Hens were already disappearing into the jungle as I parked up my car, so were well and truly gone by the time I’d put my shoes on and signed in. The paper led us across fairly open ground and in to a very well known trail - which is so much wider than it used to be! It’s like a highway these days! I was quite pleased as I know this trail really well, I’ve laid three runs on it - including one for the Hens at the end of 2010. And I do know that it’s at least the second time our lovely Chinese hares have laid this for a CNY run - although last time it was backwards - which I think is rather more challenging!
I managed to catch up a little bit, as I could hear ‘Checking’ and then on-paper called, I’m pretty sure the check was laid down and to the left, and the on-paper was back and to the right. The paper then took us down to a wee stream, across a bridge and up to the right. He we began the ascent of a gentle but very long hill! Up, up and up we went, over logs, under low hanging branches, until we came upon another check, which is where our front runners came a little bit unstuck.
As I caught up, there appeared to be a bit of confusion. Alice in Wonderland was on the back horn, standing on the on-paper, duly calling ‘on on’, this was exactly as she should have done, but confusion abounded as our front runners had gone on from the check, and must have gone rather a long way and found some old paper, as they were calling on too! It’s always handy to look at where we are, and what time it is, and where the paper is leading…..Anyway, luckily the rest of the hash followed the paper and came out via a long down, another steepish up and another down - out onto the dirt road, which gives us a chance to either stretch our legs and run back, or to enjoy a nice stroll and a chat on the way back to the tent.
When we got back, we established that there were only 3 missing and why they were missing. They appeared as we were losing daylight, and we were very glad to see them.
The shout up commenced and was very abley conducted by our JMs, hares were down-downed, as were a few FTGs, and our FRs were hashitted. Then our Chinese Hares, treated us to what has become a CNY run tradition for us, we took our chopsticks and tossed the wonderful food, taking care to keep it all in and not to throw any out, ensuring the best of luck for the coming Year of the Snake. Finally a lovely spread of traditional Chinese food followed so we were all more than sated with all of the wonderful fayre. Thank you Hares!

Awww Dude, Tuesday’s happening was righteous!
I was on the scene, lip flapping with some groovy chicks while waiting to boogie, when we saw a real gone cat booking it towards us with a dog. Through my peepers I could see that things were about to get hairy. Our hare was bummed – she’d run out of paper, lost her other dog and she needed to jam.
No need to flip a wig though, our hash is tight. One flowerchild did her a solid and got trail paper out of her car, while another supplied a driver so the hare was ready to peel out within about five minutes. The first dog was wiped out though, so she was left at the site to chill.
The rest of the gang came truckin up in their bean wagons and cropdusters, decked out in their choice hash paraphernalia. Finally, the man sounded the horn and we all cut out from the carpark and onto the paper trail. First check was quickly reached, but only found after rejecting the first call of ‘on paper’ as bogus.
The first hill (which seemed to go on forever) blew the doors off any thoughts of cruising – getting blitzed by a couple of knocked up chicks was a bit of a bummer, but I continued to hang loose and soon everything was groovy. The trail temporarily flattened, then turned left and went through some choice jungle. At this stage a couple of fab keeno’s joined the party, then blew through with a cherry ‘see you at the end!’ – so gnarly.
The trail turned left again and that’s when things got a bit groady. Still, hashers are not all show and no go, so I refused to flake and just kept beating the feet until I finally reached the ‘short/long’ run divide. There was another check here somewhere, but it was out of sight, so some fast and funky chick must have found it.
Dudes, the run so far had been freaky, but this cat was feeling pounded, so I told the long run to ‘climb it Tarzan!’ and I hung loose with our mighty fine Doc (who promptly did a brody and hurt her ankle – but all was sweet – I found a boss stick) and we cruised on out.
Back at the sign out, the crew rapped for a while before peeling out for the on-on at Rachel’s pad. Did you see the Fuzz on the other side of the road, checking out the badass speed freaks? Heavy man, heavy.
After changing our rags, we all hung loose until our funky main dudettes got the ball rolling and the shout-up started. We had five (count ‘em Daddy O) first time guests, three of whom came to the shout-up; Sam, Janet, and Val. Even better, two choice chicks (Doris and LeAnna) joined our bitchin gang – copasetic!! Finally, hash was stoked that our very own Smurf has done 650 runs – jazzed!!!
The nosh certainly wasn’t gutt waddin, the company was fine, and the jokes were a gas. We all enjoyed the evening until it was time to bug out to our own pads to crash, wiped out from a real blast! Next Tuesday’s happening will be right on – it’s time to party like it’s 1963, so get out your inner flower child and get ready to groove. Until then, keep it real dude. Peace out.

This run well and truly christened my new hash shoes. Just how many times did we leap over or splash through streams. 10 or more? A true hash with lots of ups, downs, water and mud set in the valley of lower Diplo. We were surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna with the sound of animals, insects, horns and the calls of the hens. We all loved it. If you didn’t come then you missed a good one.
A man arrived just before the shout up but he was forgiven, as he came armed with a delicious chocolate cake to celebrate Satu Lagi’s birthday. We welcomed two first time guests, Debra and Beenal . Hope to see them again soon.
We were entertained by Hash Wit with her great one liners. Hash shit went to Wendy for leaving her shoes behind at the last hash. However, for some reason stayed dry as Dizzy threw the water upwards at the tent. That is after she nearly drowned the poor hash shit chicken and had to give it mouth to mouth. To be honest I don’t think I have laughed so much in a long time.

There was movement at the henhouse
As the word had got around
That Hashwit and Domestic Goddess had laid a run
And had entered the wild jungle compound
So all the hens had gathered to the fray
All the tried and noted hashers
From the simpangs near and far
Had mustered at the hashsite overnight
For the hashers love hard hashing
Where the wild jungle animals are
And the horns snuff the battle with delight
o mad margz ran to lead them
She was racing on the wing
Where the best and boldest hashers take their place
And she raced her hash shoes past them
And she made the ranges ring
With the bells on as she met them face to face
Then they saw they well loved mountain full in view
And they charged beneath the palm fronds with a sharp and sudden dash
And off they flew into the jungle they flew
Then fast the hashers followed where the gorges deep and black
Resounded to the thunder of their tread
And the hashers woke the echoes and they fiercely answered back
From the cliffs and crags that beetled overhead
And upward ever upward the ladies held their way
Where bamboo and jungle grew wide
And Ikea muttered fiercely we may bid the mod goodday
No man can hold them down the other side
At the shout up we welcomed first time guests Vanji and Doris and new member Ika. Yvette celebrated 50 runs and we sadly farewelled Madmargz who will be sadly missed. Hopefully we will see her again.
Thank you Domestic Goddess and hashwit for the delicious chilli.
Words in honour of Australia day. My apologies to Banjo Paterson
