RUN NO. 2218

HARES: Clover/Mani Mouse/GI Jane

BACK HORN: Madmargz

It was a clear afternoon when we arrived at Subok and put on my hash shoes and began first part of the run…. walk up the hill to sign in. A really good turn out of ladies and a first time guest as well.

Horn sounded and off we went. Into the jungle and the beautiful aromas of the old rubbish dump wafting trhough. Not far along and the checking began. It was found on back and off we went down down, slippery slippery, some up up, slippery slippery. Second checking started and I believe one of our returning hashers found the on paper. Away we went again..on up.

After all the rain of recent the jungle was like a muddy waterslide but we eventually made our way out to a large upwards incline cut through the bracken. Beautiful pitcher plants and eventually after getting to the top – via some rope assistance – a beautiful view!!! And once again the lovely aroma of…rubbish.

We carried on along and we finally came out at Markucing…. A to B!!! Bus waiting, drinks waiting, GI Jane waiting.

On to the bus and back to the on on site.

As we settled in to the shout up we thanked the hares for a great run, celebrated Clover’s 100th run, welcomed our new guest and when it came to Hashit we checked the board to discover that Velma and Christine were still in the jungle…. And they were!!! After some confirmation that Linda’s car was parked, and we were unable to contact them, 4 ladies went back in to look for them – Eastern Promise, Marcel, Mad Marg and GI Jane. Meanwhile Dee went down to the B site to check for them but with no luck. Eventually we got the call that they couldn’t locate them so I hopped in the awesome speed monster , my van, with Trailblazer and headed back to B site and on the way we picked them up walking down the road. YAYYY!!! Safe. Tired but safe. And a big thank you to the ladies who went back in the jungle!!!!

So back to the site and a well needed drink for Velma and Christine and some food. Thank you to the hares for the beautiful food provided and the cake from Clover!!!!

It was a fine evening, for a change, and the hens happily headed off up the barren and stony slope into the familiar comfort of the jungle trail.

Despite the recent bouts of tropical rains the trail was relatively dry with occasional stretches of marshy bits. Although there is so much clearing of the trees in this area the hash only traversed one denuded area but now with a large building, roads and street lamps. Then it was back unto a pleasant hilly trail through the jungle.

The several checks delayed the fit at the front and kept the hens together. The front runners did a good job laying the paper through for the slower runners and walkie talkies.

All ended up with wet and muddy feet in the last section before coming out down the stony slope.

Two new members were duly welcomed as were a returning member and two guests. However one guest was so keen to ‘down down’ her drink prematurely that it earned Eastern Promise the Hashit.

The Shout Up ended with food of a German flavour including meat balls, cold chicken, salads and spiced cookies.

Danke! Danke!

Driving to Diplo site in the late afternoon, I was happy to see no dark clouds for a change.

At 5.15pm sharp the horn tooted and on we went following printed-paper. As usual for Diplo, we climbed down one of the steep hills into the jungle.

Soon someone already called ‘ checking from here’. As we just arrived at a crossing, JI Jane decided to go checking out the other trail. Unfortunately for her the ‘on ‘ paper was ahead, but she caught up with the rest of us very fast.

We passed one of the small waterfalls and then climbed up a steep hill, it was still very slippery here and there after all the rain. After that it was down and down and up and up and all the way you could either hear: head, trip, slippery or thorns (oh, did I forget anything).

Don’t ask about the other checks, no clue who actually found them and the whereabouts. The whole run led through fantastic landscape, we enjoyed the meandering streams and the lush vegetation.

Thank you Trailblazer & Sarong, it was a really great run.

During the shout up, it was Ready Mix and Alice in Wonderland who explained the tradition of the Yee Sang Salad. We all were able to toss this special salad, which symbolizes abundance, prosperity and good health and every one of us had a taste of it.

After a down- down for the hares, 3 new guests were introduced and we welcomed one new member (Laura). Sarah, Linda’s daughter sadly is leaving us to go back to University in Oz. Good Luck!!! Never Wrong celebrated her 300th run and Virginie her 50th. The hash shit was awarded to Jane for failing to sign in.

The Oriental Ladies put up a great Chinese New Year feast with duck, chicken, tofu and a variety of Dim Sum. The Mandarin Orange was not missing either. It was really yummy food, thanks so much.

RUN NO. 2215 - TANJ BUNUT KANAN 1 FEB 11

RUN NO. 2215
DATE: 1 FEB 2011
HARES: Legally Blond/Jo
SITE: Tanjung Bunut Kanan - Australia Day run

All - well some, of the ladies prayed that the day would be dry so that we could have a good run as the hares would have worked hard to give the coup a good workout before tucking into the Aussie tucker.

Alas, no sign of rain in sight although a bit overcast. I was glad as it was to be my first proper hash after my accident and I was only going to go round if it was not wet. JM Squeak promptly handed me the back horn and I took up the challenge. Off we went on the sound of front horn of Ryvita and up the hill towards the stream and into the usual in-trail. Pretty trails and it was not long before we had to wade through the stream, crossing it more than once - lost count. Up a few or was it lots of steep embankments which could only be accessed with pulling oneself up, and up. Readymix had caught up and wondered how I managed!

Ahead, I could hear the bells and soon caught up with Karin (on her 42nd jaunt through the jungle with the ladies hash before returning to NZ over the weekend), and Aunty Lynn having a good chat as they strolled through the jungle. We passed througth pretty trails with quite a few trips and on we trotted, till we got to the out with the sight of the pylon trail. On the ridge we had spotted some "Singha" and was told that a little Koala was perched there for one of the front runners to find. There was only one check which was found by Satu Lagi and I was too far behind to catch up. All out safely before it got dark.

We were greeted upon signing out with Australia Day jandals, a bookmark and collected some lucky draw tickets.

At the shoutup, we farewelled Karin and one guest - Jo was welcomed. No hashit was given and we were entertained by the Australian motley crew with their funny accent which I am not sure if everyone understood. Great giveaways were drawn with many lucky winners, and the night was not over before a chook raffle was drawn. The prize was actually a bbq pack, with rissoles, chicken pieces, some sausages..... yummy - Melissa being the lucky hasher. The great cocktail now almost a signature drink by possum must not be forgotten as well.

Thanks ladies for the great evening and food.

The tartan and Scottish flags were flying high as the Hens arrived for the Burns Birthday Bash Hash Run. The traffic chaos of the Precious Parking Lassies (or the Mc Mad Maids) was a hoot mon! Dancing 4WD’s is such fun to watch. With a further hoot and a toot from McTango, off the clan went into the slippy slidey trail. With a whoop and a holla we sloshed and slipped along the open path. A lovely wee babbling brook was crossed. Then a wee pond was found and a ‘ooo vampires don’t like water’ caused but a ripple. Ye Hairs! Yer fibbed aboot not much water! There were many a brown bum to be seen. Some good hacking had been done to help us find the way, although a possum was found wandering around at the bottom of a hill looking for paper. What a walker and talker checking? But no she was just trying to find the picture of Oor Rabbie Burns to get her reward – typical Scot!

The trail became dry and wandered through bamboo, moon-scape but no more hills to be had, apart from the long lazy climb through “Residential Folly”. A nice walk back to end the run. Checks were found without a worry and all the hens were out in good spirits.

McSqueak held the hoose to attention and the shout up began. Hares wearing very funny coloured clothing, Och! Twas the tartan, were cheered. New members were hailed and our Sassy Classy visitors were welcomed. A call for the Hashit loomed and McTrailblazer was arrested for not signing in but cunningly signing out and in on her return. A kind hearted Mc Magic Roundabout shared the gong. A quiet evening for the jokes but entertainment prevailed in the “Ode to the Haggis” and a frightening sight it twas. McSmurf wielding a parang over a haggis is one scary experience. The rest of the clan in various folds of tartan played the lip bagpipes with a salute to the beloved spirit. Those who thought they would get a wee dram for finding Robbie Burns in the jungle were sorely disappointed when they were offered poetry from The Baird to read. The lilt was just not as it intended but McMagic soon deciphered our birthday boy’s words.

With tasty buns (but alas no neeps) and shortbread washed down with some cheer the night descended with a jig or two from the lassies.

RUN NO. 2213
DATE: 18 JAN 2011
SITE: SPG 378 SG AKAR
HARES: ALISON/SUE/CHERYL

It all happened in the Year of our Hash 2050, when Hash Matriarch Duchess was 1150, Grandma Sue was 500, Miss Pink 200, Velma 150 and Baby Melissa was only 50.

It came to pass that there went out a decree from Readymix that all the hash should be taxed and everyone was to assemble at the Subok Watertower. Hashers gathered from near and far and set off to follow the horn into the jungle hoping to avoid the burning bush or more likely the proverbial flood! Meanwhile, there were in the same country, hashers guarding the tent by day – namely Survivor, Tina, Duchess and Miss Pink. As we followed a well worn trail along the ridge it became increasingly clear that we might indeed have to follow the star as the late afternoon got gloomier. Before first check the trail dipped swiftly down to the river where many were baptized. Squeek and I turned tail and headed back, having met the 3 Wise Hashwomen and their dog Storm at the meeting of the ways. These seasoned ladies had laid 2 trails to separate the sheep from the goats, and as we met the frontrunners of the shorter run, we realized that last shall be first, as Virgin Back Horn Shantal, came out first, and lo, Magic Roundabout, the front horn, came out almost last! This was just after the Alison the Wise checked the board and said “Where is she, who has the horn? For we have seen a light in the bush!”

And so we all took up our chairs and gathered under the closely guarded tent, to pay our taxes and listen to JM Squeek delivering her first solo Sermon on the Mount. Verily I say unto you, she said ,We would like to thank the 3 Wise Hashwomen for a lovely run and we also congratulate the awardees, Duchess who must have been oft times reincarnated to reach this amazing number, Sue, Miss Pink, Velma and Melissa. Readymix and Noerelle told some great jokes, announcements were made and just when we wondered if the night was going to end in famine, it became a feast. The Wisewomen delivered us delicious soup, scones and cake – who needs gold, frankinsence and myrrh? Hopefully we didn’t partake of the last supper!! Once again, thanks Alison Cheryl and Sue.

And as always when drouthy neebors, neebors meet, the meek inherited the beer and as the misty night, reminiscent of a summer night in Scotland, turned dreich with a steady drizzle, the hardcore ,who are definitely aff their heids, got quietly bevvied, and were caught texting the earlybird leavers in the morn, with tales of Ye missed yersel last night, we all got blootered!!!

Tonight is Burn’s Night, an event celebrated on 25th January around the world, to pay homage to Scotland’s famous bard, Robert (Rabbie) Burns. He is famous for his love poems ‘My luv is like a red, red rose’, Tam O’Shanter’ ghostly tale, To a Mouse, Address to a Haggis and countless others. You might find some Scottish connections later in the night.

RUN NO. 2212

SITE: DIPLO
HARE: Sarong
FRONT HORN: Tango BACK HORN: Dizzy
FIRST TIME GUEST: Emily

Yet another week of hashing with thunder and rain to dampen underfoot, but judging by the array of raincoat clad hens, not enough to dampen our spirits. The in trail led us to the right and down until we got to a log bridge, past some little wild orchids and pitcher plants (which I totally missed seeing, but Alison and Cheryl spotted). Auntie Lynn and Hot Lips were just ahead of me doing a good deed to those behind us by picking up most of the paper and laying it in the branches. Even right at the start the paper was pretty soggy and easily trampled in.

After a long trudge uphill and then heading to the right through trails of bracken we came across first check. It was a good 15 to 20 minutes before the on paper was found by Alice in Wonderland. It was a back check quite a long way back and somehow, the horns didn’t seem to have picked up the paper as they went back from the check, which I did until we got to the correct on trail off to the right.

Luckily, the rain had started to ease so we could enjoy the lovely trail down. Dizzy and Mad Marg were so busy chatting, they managed to go off paper, with myself and some others blindly following. We all soon realised and back tracked and it wasn’t long before the calls of ‘on paper’ for 2nd check were heard from Magic Roundabout. After a very muddy patch at the bottom of the hill, we again went uphill and then down a small ridge. Very pretty trails.

Third check was quickly found by Mrs Pingu. After crossing a deep stream and trudging up the next hill, I decided I was ready to come out – enough for one night. At the top of this hill we thankfully turned left onto the main ridge trail out. My spirits rose and it was an easy walk out. A good length run, with the last hens out by about 6.30 pm. Thank you Sarong for yet another lovely hash – it would have been perfect if the rain had held off.

The shout up began with the usual down down for our hare. There was one first time guest, Emily from JIS. She was Marcella’s guest and wasn’t very well trained, with a bit of coaching necessary from the JM’s, but she said she really enjoyed it. Alice in Wonderland was given a lovely bouquet of flowers as thanks for her hard work as hash cash over the last 3 years. Dizzy related a sticky tale from ‘most embarrassing moments’ on the Jay Leno show on TV. Legally blonde read out an ‘Ode to Christmas’. There were lots of announcements this week. Eastern Promise had found Velma’s glasses that had been lost at Diplo last year! Mrs Pingu advertised Chinese New Year cards on sale – proceeds to RIPAS Occupational Therapy. Dizzy announced a Brunei Music Society event at the Orchid Hotel next Saturday. Smurf gave notice of the upcoming Burns Supper at Serasa on the 27th. Our JM, Squeak, asked if anyone knew the whereabouts of the hash bowls and cutlery. Kids hash and Hetero hash sites were verified. And to end the shout up, Dizzy was rewarded with a dousing of cold water for forgetting to sign out last week – dobbed in by Alice and Wonderland and well taken by Dizzy. Thank you Sarong for the delicious Indian food and a great run, despite the weather.

As I drove along the highway heading for the familiar site of DST, I was cheered by the sight of a fairly clear sky – no storm clouds in sight. Maybe it is my age or is it that I am English that makes me so preoccupied with the weather, but I do hate trudging through the jungle dripping wet – however not today!!

After a brief chat with new and old friends a squeaky horn was heard and off we all galloped, though I found myself right at the back – talking too much probably. We strolled along concrete pathways, no difficult hills to climb so we had time to appreciate the flora and fauna all around.

First I found a tortoise “ what on earth is a tortoise doing in the jungle – dead at that!!?” I was reassured that it was not a tortoise but a terrapin and definitely not dead – just hiding it’s head from me........ We carried along hearing checks called and found in front of us ... ha ha just the way I like it.

As we came to the third check, I pointed out to Heulwen my second time guest, a high wall on our right – which housed a lake that we would probably circumnavigate – but no, there was a most definite sign telling all hashers to go back the way we came in – no chance of getting lost tonight!!

More was to be seen on our way back footprints, hoof prints Trailblazer pointed out – what!! I thought well the tortoise wasn’t a tortoise so maybe hoof-prints didn’t mean a horse – no silly! Wild Boar!!! Good we didn’t see it, though we could have had it roasted for the on on!

Off we all went again and there was Alice in Wonderland photographing us as we crossed the finishing line.

At the shout up new guests were welcomed ..Yvonne and Vanessa. The other first time guests Norma and Denise didn’t stay for the shout-up and somebody who I won’t mention only missed getting the hash-shit by her absence!!! A cheer and a beer were given to the hares and a lovely supper to end the evening on on...

What a pleasant surprise. No rain, I think that is the first time in about a month.

I enjoyed a slow and pleasant ramble along wide paths with the odd stream interuption, one of these was a swim if you missed your footing. Then a
jungle meander and back onto the track for the home run. There was one 'on forward'
check and one 'on back' and one rather steep bank. If only i had had my
camera.

It's not often I am the first at the top of a hill, but the view looking
back from there was very funny. (n.b. A slow and pleasant ramble doesn't usually lead one to the front of the run unless you find the 'on paper')

Horns were Tango and Alison. We had three new guests; a visiting friend, Wena's sister and Narell from the Dairy Farm.

Many thanks to the hares, virgin hare Dee and Never Wrong, for the yummy
food.

I was nominated for the hash shit which i thought very unneccessary, so I refused!

As usual the storm clouds started gathering in the afternoon and I knew we were in for another wet night.
I arrived at Lucky Gardens and saw the paper was heading straight up the muddy embankment. There were only nine dedicated hashers willing to go in and we were without horns but Madam Sin saved the day with a whistle.

Luckily the rain eased off and was only a drizzle when we set of through mud to the top of the ridge. We soon came to first check which was a back check which took quite a while to locate and headed back through more picturesque jungle and a few not to treacherous stream crossings.

Alice in Wonderland and I were at the back of the group after second check and plodded along together needing torches near the end as darkness set in early. I managed to stay fairly dry until the last water crossing when I misjudged the depth of the water and went in waist deep.

We then came to mud flats and went acroos to more jungle and eventually the out trail/ It was an enjoyable run.

At the shout up the hares who did not venture into the juingle described a pleasant stroll under umbrellas along paved roads. Madam Sin was given a shout up for providing the whistle. The birthday hens were sung happy birthday and Legally Blonde was given a down down for her services with refreshments.

MadMarg told a very funny joke with much laughter.

Melissa was awarded the hashit for forgetting to sign in then we ate the delicious vegetable curry and birthday cake. Thank You hares.

Leaving work I noticed more and more dark clouds building up. Arriving at the site just before the horn went off, I decided not to join the hashers into the jungle, but take a stroll with Eastern Promise, as I had just survived a bad cold.

After not even 5 minutes, the sky opened up and the rain came crushing down on us. I really pitied the hens in the jungle especially the once wearing glasses. Even you wear a cap the glasses fog up after a while and you don’t see a lot.

My co- hare Satu Lagi was telling me later that they couldn’t find the on - paper at 2nd check and all decided to turn around and were out at around 6.30pm. They were crossing a small stream on the way in which turned into a river with the water gushing down on them on the way out. Thank goodness for Ryvita’s long legs to check a shallow crossing for Satu Lagi’s shorter ones.

Good for the hens to carry torchlights, as by this time it was pitch dark.

The hares had a bus organized to pick up all the hashers from the Raddisson Hotel as it was a A to B run, but came back empty.

It was a night of celebrations, as all the hares celebrated special runs, a few down- downs was the reward. Jane after all these years got her hash handle and is now called GI Jane.

The JM’s were telling a few jokes and Melissa got the hashit for not signing out, but as usual she had already dashed off.

The hares sponsored food, too. We enjoyed the fresh spring rolls and pizza early home made christmas puddings with cream and custard - Thanks so much for that.

Mata-Mata is a beautiful site with magnificent pitcher plants along the trail. As the sun was shedding golden light 41 hens and 5 chicks set off to the sound of Vanessa on front horn. It was a familiar trail with ups and downs and creeks and only two checks so all emerged before dark with Ryvita first out and GI Jane on back horn.

The hen house decreased as numerous hashers flew from the coop because of other commitments, being that time of year when things wind up and wind down simultaneously, like a hash run, but those who remained enjoyed a good shout-up ably conducted by our new JM Dizzy assisted by Psycho. Shantal was down downed as a virgin hare and Jessica Woodward was welcomed back as a returning hasher. Dizzy put on the jester’s hat and told us a joke about M&Ms only melting in a girl’s mouth not in her hand!

The hash- it passed on to Sarong for the ignominious offence of her mobile phone sounding during the shout up. Legally Blonde did a good trade with her gnt bar and the hares provided a delectable “make your own burger” supper. Another run notched up and a pleasant evening was had by all. We look forward to a great year with the new committee bringing their own style to the hen house.

The Gambler Hasher

On a warm Brunei evenin' on the side of Jalan Muara,

We met up with the hashers, we were all so keen to run,

So we took up the hash horns and followed the white paper,

'Til we reached the on-on and we heard the others speak

They said, "Hens, keep your heads down, they’re still lookin’ for a JM

And knowin' what that involves, best keep out of sight

So if you don’t mind me saying, those ladies are on a mission

and if you show any weakness they’ll pounce on you tonight"

They handed me a bottle and I drank down every swallow

Then I bummed a cigarette and asked someone for a light

And the night got deathly quiet and our faces lost all expression

They said, "If you're gonna run the hash, girls, you gotta hoe-down tonight!"

You got to know when to sign in, know when to sign out,

Know when to walk the hash, know when to run

You never talk during the on-on, unless you want the hash-it

There'll be time enough for talking, when the meetings done.

Every hasher knows that the secret to survivin'

Is knowin' how to follow paper, and knowing how to drink

'Cause every hen’s a winner and every hash’s a goer

And the best that you can hope for is go another week.

And when the on-on finished, the party, it got started

We farewelled the old, and, welcomed in the new,

And somewhere in the darkeness a tune started playing,

No, hash-its were awarded, cos we know all the rules:

You got to know when to sign in, know when to sign out,

Know when to walk the hash, know when to run

You never talk during the on-on, unless you want the hash-it

There'll be time enough for talking, when the meetings done.
