RUN NO. 2206 SUBOK 67 - 30 NOV 2010

RUN NO. 2206
DATE: 30 NOV 2010
HARES: SID/GUNG HO/JANE/THELMA
SITE: SUBOK 67
FRONT HORN: RYVITA BACK HORN: SQUEEK

Leaving work I noticed more and more dark clouds building up. Arriving at the site just before the horn went off, I decided not to join the hashers into the jungle, but take a stroll with Eastern Promise, as I had just survived a bad cold.

After not even 5 minutes, the sky opened up and the rain came crushing down on us. I really pitied the hens in the jungle especially the once wearing glasses. Even you wear a cap the glasses fog up after a while and you don’t see a lot.

My co- hare Satu Lagi was telling me later that they couldn’t find the on - paper at 2nd check and all decided to turn around and were out at around 6.30pm. They were crossing a small stream on the way in which turned into a river with the water gushing down on them on the way out. Thank goodness for Ryvita’s long legs to check a shallow crossing for Satu Lagi’s shorter ones.

Good for the hens to carry torchlights, as by this time it was pitch dark.

The hares had a bus organized to pick up all the hashers from the Raddisson Hotel as it was a A to B run, but came back empty.

It was a night of celebrations, as all the hares celebrated special runs, a few down- downs was the reward. Jane after all these years got her hash handle and is now called GI Jane.

The JM’s were telling a few jokes and Melissa got the hashit for not signing out, but as usual she had already dashed off.

The hares sponsored food, too. We enjoyed the fresh spring rolls and pizza early home made christmas puddings with cream and custard - Thanks so much for that.

RUN NO. 2205
DATE: 23 NOV 2010
HARES: STPRI GIRLS (Pee Wee/Squeek/Shantal plus Psycho)
SITE: Mata-Mata

Mata-Mata is a beautiful site with magnificent pitcher plants along the trail. As the sun was shedding golden light 41 hens and 5 chicks set off to the sound of Vanessa on front horn. It was a familiar trail with ups and downs and creeks and only two checks so all emerged before dark with Ryvita first out and GI Jane on back horn.

The hen house decreased as numerous hashers flew from the coop because of other commitments, being that time of year when things wind up and wind down simultaneously, like a hash run, but those who remained enjoyed a good shout-up ably conducted by our new JM Dizzy assisted by Psycho. Shantal was down downed as a virgin hare and Jessica Woodward was welcomed back as a returning hasher. Dizzy put on the jester’s hat and told us a joke about M&Ms only melting in a girl’s mouth not in her hand!

The hash- it passed on to Sarong for the ignominious offence of her mobile phone sounding during the shout up. Legally Blonde did a good trade with her gnt bar and the hares provided a delectable “make your own burger” supper. Another run notched up and a pleasant evening was had by all. We look forward to a great year with the new committee bringing their own style to the hen house.

NEXT RUN: SUBOK 67 -- dont forget a torch as its that time of the year when the sun disappears very quickly down the horizon, and more so under the jungle canopy.

The Gambler Hasher

On a warm Brunei evenin' on the side of Jalan Muara,

We met up with the hashers, we were all so keen to run,

So we took up the hash horns and followed the white paper,

'Til we reached the on-on and we heard the others speak

They said, "Hens, keep your heads down, they’re still lookin’ for a JM

And knowin' what that involves, best keep out of sight

So if you don’t mind me saying, those ladies are on a mission

and if you show any weakness they’ll pounce on you tonight"

They handed me a bottle and I drank down every swallow

Then I bummed a cigarette and asked someone for a light

And the night got deathly quiet and our faces lost all expression

They said, "If you're gonna run the hash, girls, you gotta hoe-down tonight!"

You got to know when to sign in, know when to sign out,

Know when to walk the hash, know when to run

You never talk during the on-on, unless you want the hash-it

There'll be time enough for talking, when the meetings done.

Every hasher knows that the secret to survivin'

Is knowin' how to follow paper, and knowing how to drink

'Cause every hen’s a winner and every hash’s a goer

And the best that you can hope for is go another week.

And when the on-on finished, the party, it got started

We farewelled the old, and, welcomed in the new,

And somewhere in the darkeness a tune started playing,

No, hash-its were awarded, cos we know all the rules:

You got to know when to sign in, know when to sign out,

Know when to walk the hash, know when to run

You never talk during the on-on, unless you want the hash-it

There'll be time enough for talking, when the meetings done.

RUN NO. 2203
DATE: 9 NOVEMBER
SITE: SPG 791 JLN MUARA, KG TANAH JAMBU
HARES: RYVITA/CALL GIRL
FRONT HORN: Dizzy
BACK HORN: Fertile Myrtle

We arrived to a new Morley Movers site to find tent going up and the rain coming down. It was great to see our Bionic Woman – Trailblazer - back safely from Singapore with her shot put winning arm!!

Slowly ladies started to arrive, then shortly after Dizzy as Front Horn honked away and off everyone went. Fertile Myrtle took back horn.

Unfortunately I stayed behind with a bunch of other hashers who found the driving rain enough to drive us under the tent.

But no sooner had the horn sounded and Squeak was back – blood running down leg – close encounter with a drain and the drain won. So after some quick expert medical attention from me she was fighting fit again. More hashers kept arriving but went for a quick wet stroll and back to the protection of the tent.

The hares arrived wondering if they’d need to go in – as it was getting dark fast, raining harder and still 7 odd ladies left in. The tent seemed to offer some shelter but you needed to be able to wade through the waist deep mud that literally sucked you to the ground.

After a while many ladies left for drier places - - as in home - - and eventually our ladies in the jungle made it out. They had made it to second check but the rain was so heavy and it was getting so dark that when they separated to look for the paper they couldn’t hear each other – so extremely excellent decision to turn around and head back out the way they came in. Ladies – Excellent Hashing Skills in wild weather!!!

Out they came – soaked but happy. Most ladies seemed to depart and we were left with a small handful for the shout up. We welcomed back returning hasher Sarah (Velma’s daughter) over from Aussie for a holiday. Great to have you back!! It was a quick shout up and Dizzy gave us a great joke. We decided that everyone was soaked enough without needing hashit.

The hares provided some beautiful yummy tomato soup with aioli and French loaf… it was perfect for the conditions.

Thanks ladies for a great hash and food.

Trail into the jungle
Along the fence line

RUN NO. 2202
SITE: SPG 370 JLN MUARA, KG SG TILONG
HARES: MAGIC ROUNDABOUT/GORDON/TRAILBLAZER (in absentee!)

After a weekend full of Halloween celebrations and a merry morning at the Melbourne Cup, I felt a bit slow and sluggish arriving to spg 370 on Tuesday afternoon. A rather big group of hens had gathered at Magic’s house to be set off by front horn Ryvita.

Off we went up and along a very long fence, over some open areas in the baking sun before finally entering the jungle up the top. We didn’t go through the jungle long before we were once again out in the open and arrived to the first check, in the middle of a big swampy area with loads of spooky looking trees.

First check was found by Melissa, and off we went back into the jungle. It was a bit strange because although this was very familiar surroundings, it still wasn’t. So much of our beautiful jungle has been chopped down, it’s really sad.

Second check was found by Virginie at it took us down a big hill and out in some other open mudlands and back into the jungle. A few of the hens by now recognized themselves but still the third check threw us a bit and there was a bit of confusion before that as well was found by Virgine, and we continued out into a moon landscape before hitting the high fence again and trotted away on the home stretch.

It was a great longish 5k+ run and it really made me shake off some of that heavy, sluggy feeling I had had before the start!

Shout-up started and we sang 'Happy Birthday' and toasted to Trailblazer in her absence - hope she get’s well soon! The hashit changed hands and was given out to Christine for having her phone go off. We also had another couple of christenings this week: Fiona was named ‘Gung-ho’ and Wina officially got her hetero-name ‘Psycho’ carried over from the Hetero to the H3 hash as well.

Thank you hares for a great run!

RUN NO. 2201 - 26OCT2010 - DIPLO

RUN NO. 2201
DATE: 26 OCT 2010
SITE: DIPLO
HARES: Squeek/Alice in Wonderland
FRONT HORN: RYVITA BACK HORN: HOTLIPS

It was a suitable night for a Halloween run, dark, gloomy, forbidding. A lowly, threatening sky and rumble of thunder in the distance. A few less than the usual gathering of hens set off, torches at the ready at 6.15pm with the promise of a flat run and only one hill. Haha we said, it is Diplo. How can one lay a run in Diplo with no hills.

Well we headed off down one of the Diplo intrails and did a sharpish left turn on a pleasantly trippy path, greeted by headstones and other macabre reminders that this was indeed nearly All Hallows Eve, a night for spirits both good and bad to pass through to our world for a brief moment and mingle with us in dark and frightening sights and sounds.

Gladdened by our little circle of light we wound our way along a series of paths, ever wary of lurking ghouls. A frightening scream gave a hint of what lay ahead. It was only a march of bull ants, each the size of a wee hashers little finger no less. Emboldened by fellow hashers the hapless victim was urged across the log, and we were on our way again. Dark, small paths, scary drop-offs into darkling waters. On, on we trudged wishing for hearth and home (or tent and Tigers.) However the path did in fact prove to be delightfully flat, however meandering it wandered. A miracle not to be denied on this most trying of nights.

A halt in the procession of strangely hushed hashers proved to be Velma’s throwing away of her camera in a wild sweep of arm and an ominous splash as it surely sank into the darkest of murk. A futile fumble in the gloom did not produce it and luckless Velma joined the throng lamenting her loss.

After 55 minutes we came to a recognizable spot and gasped our delight and being on the homeward leg. But more screams were ahead, and we were greeted by ghouls and their assistants with water bombs who took fiendish delight in squirting us and making us take fright and made us scream some more, which made those at the back who did not know what was happening scream in sympathy. ! Whew. We were past and on and out. A few mutters were to be heard in the ranks of no hills promised as we trudged up what could only have been a flat path that sloped uphill!! Would the hares be given the 'you know what' for lying? That is still to be decided as the decision was postponed to next week due to the lateness of the hour and hungry hens wanting to get on to celebrate their release from yet another night in darkest Diplo.

Our favourite tent welcomed us. Before Witches and wizards joined us, as we approached the tent we were greeted by Nurse Hot Lips dressing Call Girls wound. Apparently she had stepped into the drain before the run but managed to go round and was having a final dressing after the run - very courageous indeed - another casualty of the Diplo kind. We even had a Chinese Empress dowager, complete with pumpkin hat and stubby holder. Our shout up was delayed as a couple of hashers liked it in the jungle so much they delayed coming out. At last the shout up started.

Guests were welcomed and our JMs honoured two hashers with handles. The mighty Mani is now to be known as Minnie Mouse, no, the mighty Minnie is now to be known as Mani Mouse !! And Ice Queen Kelly is now to be known by her favourite and much desired tipple Strongbow.

And so another Halloween passed in the abode.

Thank you Committee for a scrumptious supper, which varied from soup and bread, vegetable curry and rice, pastas galore, noodles, dips and yummy biscuits.

P.S. Smurf, having taken last weeks advice and had her gingko and Omega 3s found her keys. We won’t ask her where she found them will we! And Luckless Velma had her luck changed by her camera’s retrieval the next morning by “lady hasher” of the day, Cannibal.

Alls well that ends well.

High up by the water tower the hash was set to go. The words indicated ‘gentle hills’ but knowing we were starting on a ridgeline made me more than a little suspicious. However, all the pretty in pink ladies were ready for the challenge.

The trail went up a little way, then plunged down the hill, continuing down and down and down until I thought we might start tunneling (“I knew there were going to be hills – every step down will have to be regained before we get to the exit – who set this hash?” were just some of the comments I heard.) We went through some ‘tree tunnels’ before starting the inevitable up with a rope climb – very ‘Tarzan’, or rather, very ‘Jane!’. The up was everything I’ve come to expect from spg 378, and by the time I was out, I was definitely pink! The checks were found by Call Girl and Peewee. Congratulations on a hash well laid.

Being the breast cancer awareness run, there were marshmallows, lollies, and baileys waiting to greet us at the tent, along with pretty pink balloons. Everyone got ready for the shout up which was a real ‘bras on parade’ event! Thank you to the hares for the pink presents – I do like ‘hello kitty.’ There were 5, lets count that again, 5 first time guests – Kim, a boatie from Auz, Cam from Brunei, Rou Ling and her daughter Miriam from Singapore, and Kate from NZ – we are an international bunch. Tonight was also the last run for Not Yet who is off to Fiji – good luck Nellie, and keep the spare bedroom ready! It was also great to welcome back Mrs Pingu – we hope to see her again soon.

The hash hit was popular tonight with lots of taps and no returns, but finally we were ready for the hashit which was just as popular. Smurf had forgotten to sign out (again – is it fish oil or gingko tablets she needs? Can’t remember!). Also on the ‘naughty list’ were Shantal and Elaine who, although they had both had the most thorough training from some nameless saint hasher, still both forgot to introduce their guest to the JMs. tsk, tsk. Very well taken though.

We finished the evening with delicious baked potatos covered in baked beans and cheese, with cake for afters. Before everyone took off a group photo was taken to commemorate a very successful hash – congratulations to all.

SITE: DIPLO
HARES: Sarong/Trailblazer/Dizzy -- surprise appearance
FRONT HORN: Ruthless Pursuit

The appointment at RIPAS over and feeling in the pink I made it to the Diplo site with time to spare. A rather aggressive horn blower set the run off early and we made our way around and about searching for paper before heading down into the valley and the large log over the creek. We turned left and went up a real tumour of a hill that seemed to go on without end. Thankfully it leveled off after a while and we could catch our breath.

We could hear checking in the distance. I asked for a second opinion and this confirmed that the on on paper was being called down in the valley. We lost the height we had gained and crossed the stream at the bottom of the hill. We set off on the right and passed a couple of well known land marks; the tree with the odd growth and a large hole below the roots and later on, over to the left, back horn bridge. Would we go around or up the hill at this point? On up of course. Reaching the ridge we turned left and at some point passed the strap.

Carrying on we looked as if we would turn down to more water but we continued on the ridge for quite some time. We had time to chat and plan our social time. When we came off the ridge we had a rather awkward creek crossing and Velma slipped on the log. Hash nurse was on hand to complete a diagnosis. Velma was symptom free and we all continued on our way. A couple of turns and a trot uphill and we were into stage 3 of the hash, the out trail along Bill’s ridge. I can report that “fast” Clare found checks 1 and 3 and Satu Lagi the 2nd check. Many thanks to Sarong for giving us the chance to get the hash right the second time around!

At the shout up we welcomed back a returning hasher, Jenny, who has been in Oz. Elaine brought 2 first time guests, Caroline from UK and Christie from Canada. We hope to see them both again. Diva introduced us to the JM’s justice for talkers during the shout up. Be warned. The jester’s hat was passed to Speedo who explained how man was created from a useless tit. Alice in Wonderland told us how to grow wonderful vegetables. Hash members were encouraged to sign up for next year’s committee and there was a discussion about the date for our founder’s day celebrations. Email Diva with your opinion.

The Halloween run on 26th Oct will start at 6pm. Start preparing your costumes – black and white theme. Wina hobbled to the front to tell us about her successful sponsored walk and it was time for the hash hit to be passed on. Smurf claimed it this week for not signing out – she had been too busy. Dizzy showered her and half the hash with water and we moved on to enjoy the food that everyone had brought to share. Another great evening under the stars. On On GI Jane

Elaine After several weeks of Diplo and other hashes at the same site, the hens set off and we were soon down familiar in-trail of previous runs. Front runners were off and we seem to be following the river for a bit and believe first check took a while and some confusion later after 2nd check as to where paper was as there appeared to be some old paper leading a few a stray. Hens were calling here and there and groups formed and decisions made. A good work out and thanks to the hares in response to filling in for a run that Dizzy had booked but alas, Dizzy was still flying around and did not get back in time. I heard a few hens proceeded to the wrong site and Readymix was all the way at Kota Batu before turning around and headed for Diplo. Returning hasher from Manila Running Bare was welcomed together with her guest Julie who originated from England. Thanks hares for the yummy food, and also to Jenny from the block for the sweet corn (she had got the wrong week for bring and share). Site: Bukit Mentiri

Front Horn: Claire C

Back Horn: Sue

After a wonderfully peaceful day off (thank you Teacher’s Day) I was rip-roaring and ready to go to hash. As we were heading to a new site, I left a little early and looked carefully for the sign at the roundabout that was promised (I obviously need my eyes tested again though because I completely missed it, although people arriving after me swore it was there!). Anyway, I managed to spot the next sign and sailed into the appropriate simpang just in time to direct the tent truck to a delightful little clearing next to a rather foreboding hill.

By the time the hash was almost ready to set off my rip-roaring attitude had mellowed to a more gentle ‘I think I’m ready.’ This unfortunate mood swing was decided by some fairly ominous signs of impending stormdom in the form of rain splotches and thunder cracks.

Anyway, we set off at the appropriate time on a proper trail, just for a change, with ropes to help the more feeble among us (i.e. me) up hills, and little signposts stating the distance that each new path would take us before we could get out again. All in all, a very pleasant change.

The views were lovely, but I’m not sure how many checks there were or who found them, as I decided that I didn’t really need to have a shower before I got home. As I was definitely going to have one if I completed the entire hash, I decided that I would short-cut out on one of the well-signposted trails. (Sorry hares!)

Needless to say, the sky opened up and all the stalwart troops who did the hash properly got soaked – congratulations and well done, I like the attitude! Rain kept all formalities to a minimum, there were no jokes or announcements to share or hashit given out as no-one could hear anything. We did have a first time guest, Cath from England – I wonder what she thought of us and whether she will come back?

The hares provided a delicious make-it-yourself burger dinner which was much appreciated by all. Unfortunately the tent flooded underfoot and most hashers were gone by 7pm. Hopefully the wet season will stop (again?!) soon and make our evenings more conducive to longer gatherings.

We have not done a run at Menteri Salambigar for quite a while so it was good to do somewhere different. We commenced the run at a different spot along the road from the usual entrance point and continued along the picturesque trail which weaved in and out .The checks must have been discovered quite easily for as usual I was not far enough ahead to be a part of them.
I originally thought the hares were being kind and that the hills were quite gentle but soon changed my mind after about a half an hour, when we struck at least two challenging hills which proved to test my leg muscles.

There were a few slippery downward slopes and some hens came out with muddy backsides but the weather was kind so we did not get too muddy and dirty. At the shout up one first time guest Marcella from the UK was introduced.Returning hasher Schnapps from Brisbane was welcomed back for a brief visit and she proceeded to shower some hares with beer.

Legally Blonde celebrated her 250th run and we celebrated Janes 50 years strong birthday with lovely cake. Alice wearing the new jokers hat entertained us with an amusing joke.

Once again there were no calls for the Hashit so Mrs Merlot and Bella still hold it.
The hares put on delicious chilli.

Thank You

Another week at Diplo, but that’s ok with me because I really like the area. It’s always got lots of hills and I always feel like I’ve had a great workout afterwards. This week was no exception as there were plenty of hills to clamber up. It was a bit muddy this week and the hens all got their feet wet going through the water. Checks were found reasonably quickly and we ended up coming out the same way we came in; a lolly pop route.

After the run Mad Margz was selling some lovely rattan baskets; I brought a huge one which will make a fantastic laundry basket.

There were several first time guests this week. There was Kat from the UK who has been in Brunei for seven years! Seven years without hash — well, better late then never!! Then we had Kerry who was also from the UK but had only been here for three and a half weeks. Lisa from New Zealand was popping over for a holiday (I’m sure the hash will be the highlight) and finally Lena, also from New Zealand who works for CFBT.

Congratulations to Fiona who has now done her 50 runs!!

Then came the jokes of the evening. Cheryl had an interesting joke about a clever poodle and a leopard and Alice entertained the crowd with her joke about being naked when you’re older.

Nobody got the hashit but Virginie must still be in the running for not signing out two weeks ago.

Thank you for a lovely run.

The heavens opened at 2 O'Clock and I thought we were in for a very wet Diplo run but fortunately the rain had stopped by 4 O'Clock so we were saved.

When I arrived Tango was excitedly praising Eastern Promise who had found her diamond bangle missing for 2 weeks after the Kids Hash.
It was a smaller number of hares then normal due to CFBT holidays.

The words promised only a few small easy hills but I did not believe them. We started off along the usual Diplo entry and along the trail which luckily had not become too muddy after the rain. There were a few stream crossings but the water was clean and not dirty and the Diplo jungle was lovely and quite cool from the rain.

First check I believe was found by Ruthless Pursuit [I was not far enough ahead to be involved]
and second check by Virginie but after second check we discovered quite early that we were on the out trail so a discussion was held whether to go straight out or to continue along a longer trail which would lead us out. We decided to take the longer route being real hashers and not pikers.

I was out by 6 O'Clock and the hills were easy ones as promised.

The shout up began and there was one first time guest.Alison's sons girlfriend from the UK.I am very sorry I do not remember her name.
Sarong,Jenni of the block,Mani and Alice in Wonderland celebrated a total of 1050 runs between them.Well Done ladies.
Speedo told a joke about a magic penis and we congratulated Cheryl on Seranai singers success at the KK choir competition.

Virginie did not sign out but escaped the hashit as she had already left but the JMs have long memories.
