Last week’s run was a delightfully different one. Upon arrival at the Serasa Yacht Club the hens were greeted with shouts from Bunny Girl to hurry up and get ourselves on to the jetty. A little confused we all made our way down the jetty and were herded onto the boat. Boats? Now this was interesting.

Soon we headed off with a lung full of petrol and an earful of the guttural noise of the new engines churning in the water. The trip over was very pleasant and when the water intermittently flowed into the back of the boat all the hens obligingly lifted their feet up so as not to get them wet. We shouldn’t have bothered as when we arrived at Pulau Muara Besar (the island opposite the yacht club) we all had to wade through the knee high water (or thigh high depending on how height challenged you were) to get to the island. And so our adventure began.

Although at the start we had to wade through a bit of swampy water we soon broke through into some nice dry undergrowth. The trail was a very windy one making many twists and turns, so much so that some of the hens missed a few of the bends and caught up the paper trail a bit further on as the crow flies (not mentioning any names). In carefully following the paper I was intrigued by the crisscrossing of orangy tendrils across the ground. At first I thought they were plastic or fishing lines caught across the undergrowth (Cheryl apparently thought the same) but on closer inspection realized that they were indeed the runners of plants – how intriguing.

As we headed further along the trail I started to notice an amazing array of pitcher plants. There were big ones, red ones, fat ones, hourglass shaped ones and the cutest tiny little ones with a variety of green and pink lids. Although I was trying to keep up a decent pace I wanted to slow down to take a closer look (or even some pictures if I’d had a camera) and I was careful not to tread on these beautiful little treasures and tried to warn others behind me as well. As if this wasn’t surprising enough we then headed into some ground with the strangest dried mud that looked like cow pats and crackled underfoot. But there was no time to delay as Trailblazer was furiously honking the horn up ahead waiting for some others to catch up, so into the long grass we went eventually coming out on a lovely sandy waterway where you could get up a bit of a run, this finally emerged back onto our starting beach. Once we had waded back onto the boat the waiting hens were treated to a lovely pinky orange sunset. Now that was hashing in style.

The luxury continued back at the yacht club with the on on where we celebrated Alison’s 50th Birthday in style with cocktails, delicious food, cake and fireworks! Presentations were also made to Ms Merlot for completing 100 runs and for Diana for completing 150 runs and a new member Misuzu was welcomed to the ranks. After the shout up we all gathered for a group photo. All in all it was a fabulous night for the ladies hash. Thank-you to the hares for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

RUN NO. 2147 - RIMBA

Pink Food
A pink audience under a pink tent

The pink hares Speedo/Jane & Tango

RUN NO. 2147
DATE: 13 OCT 2009
SITE: Rimba - Breast Cancer run
HARES: Speedo/Tango & Jane
FRONT HORN: Mad Marg
BACK HORN: Diana Price
HENS: 47 CHICKS: 8

Many pink-breasted hens were spotted at the roadside at Rimba this week! Or maybe that should be the ‘spotted pink breasted hens’ for those amongst you who are twitchers!
You could not miss our site this week; the tent was festooned with pink ribbons and pink bunting. A lot of work had obviously gone into decorating the tent. Thank you hares.
Just before the horn sounded to send us off into the jungle, we were told to get together for a group photo, which we did as well -behaved hashers. Then as the horn sounded for the off we ran/walked through a pink starting tape and up the path to start our hash, led by Mad Marg , the front horn.

This was my kind of hash, no significant mountains to climb, no muddy slippy downs or raging streams to cross, just a gentle walk. Before we knew it we were back at the tent. Mad Marg said she was out in 29 minutes! I’m sorry but I have no idea who found the checks.

The hares, dressed to the nines in wigs and things, were there to greet us with heart shaped marshmallows and sucky sweeties. Where did they get the tutus? I have always wanted a tutu!
We caused quite a stir at the side of the road, Brunei has not witnessed such a sight in many a long day. Cars were slowing down to have a good look and a few came back for a second peek.
The shout up then commenced. The hares were called up and thanked for all their efforts.
Then it was time to meet the first time guests. We had Diane, Liz and Ann from U.K. and Jessica from Sweden.
Trish was given an award for 200 run s. When the JM asked what she had spent the money on, she replied it had probably been spent in SupaSave!

Next came Joke Time and Speedo regaled us with a boob joke.
Prizes were handed out to those lucky enough to find ‘pink ladies’ in the jungle. Then the prize for best dressed hasher went to Mad Marg, whose knickers seemingly were of the pink persuasion! We didn’t have any evidence of this however.
Speedo gave us a little talk about taking care of our boobs and announced she had passed her five year clearance. We had a minute’s silence to remember all our friends and loved ones who have succumbed to this terrible cancer and also reflect on the survivors who have beaten the disease. We toasted the survivors with Pink Baileys!

More presents were distributed to all the hens; my goodness, thank you again hares. Then it was announcement time; first a lovely letter from Mrs Pingu, followed by info about the Kid’s Hash and our Hash party!:

The Hash Shit was tossed over Diana, for not signing out (too busy being a back horn) and Mamasan for a mobile phone violation.
If all that wasn’t enough excitement, more gifts in the form of vouchers for Fitness Zone, were distributed to some lucky hens.

Our lovely hares fed us with curry puffs, open sandwiches and cute wee cup cakes.
What a night!

Arrived early and parked down the hill rather than up to leave space for the committee as they have a lot of things to carry. Hint! Hint!

The hens gathered catching up on the latest gossip. 5.15 pm already and time to sound the horn and off we went. Up and down the hills puffing and panting (doesn't get any easier). First check was found by Suzie - it was a back check. Off we trudged up the hills gaspiing and the yippee! time to go down. 2nd check was found by (sorry can't remember) but do know Madmarg found 3rd check.

Last time we were here (with the same hares - ed) we only made it to 2nd check as the hares were unable to get us out and we returned to base. So well done for a great run!

Bunny Girl gave the hares a Down! Down! A new guest was welcomed frm the UK (her mom's Sally). We were told there was a hash social night on Saturday 24th Octoer for fully paid up members and that you could bring a guest and food would be provided and that Founder's Day was on the 17th November. (The theme is Mardi Gras---- start getting your costumes together --- remember, purple, green and gold is the way to go -- beads, feathers, whatever tickles your fancy!! ed)

Ms Pink told some very good jokes.

The hashit went to Bunny Girl because her phone went off, Legally Blonde and Beluga for talking and Call Girl for forgetting the hash basket.

A lovely veggie curry was served - thank you hares.

As commonly happens I arrived fashionably late with my guest, just in time to allow everyone a head start and to see you all clambering up a clay hill.

When I reached the top of the hill I was surprised to observe how thick the smoke haze was when I looked back down (these fires are totally not the one!). On into the jungle we went – going through a plantation – like Peter Rabbit going through Mr McGregor’s carrot patch. We past a couple of windmills and a friendly looking scarecrow.

We then hit an original main trail, by now hot on the heels of back horn. We chopped down a gear and arrived at first check just in time to hear the call “on back” – first check found by Pee Wee. Perfect timing we thought so we cut to the chase and followed everyone. We then went off the main trail and down into thicker jungle, which seemed so much cooler, this was welcomed as this day was particularly hot and all the hens were dripping wet. We crossed a wee creek and proceeded up a big hill where we came across Dizzy leaning up against a tree, muttering words to the effect of “mild heart attack” (having a dizzy spell).

Second check was found at the top of the hill by Ruthless Pursuit. Back onto the main track we went, noting a few big fallen trees lying across the paths that weren’t there on my last visit to Lucky Gardens. We crossed a couple of good sturdy log bridges, over the lake/pond, then popped out onto sand/mud flats thinking “yippee we are out” but alas no, we saw hens climbing up yet another challenging hill which then lead us back to the finish.

I thought it was a great run, covering a bit of everything –good trails jungle, creeks and hills – so well done to the hares and special thanks to Juergen for helping to lay it/

I was unable to stay for the shout up but heard that the hares put on yummy food – so thank you hares.

On on Ms Merlot

RUN NO. 2144 - LUCKY GARDENS

Hares: Sue/Alison & Cheryl
Attentive well-behaved listener.

Catching up with Hari Raya stories before the run at George's workshop

RUN NO. 2144
DATE: 22 SEP 2009
SITE: Lucky Gardens
HARES: Alison/Cheryl/Sue

Its Hari Raya, open house after open house!! I just came back from one of those, thoroughly stuffed with Rendang, Lemang and other Malay delicacies. The Brunei hospitality was absolutely great again.

Had to rush home to get changed and as usual was a bit late for the run.
We started off at the back of George Henson’s warehouse along the road and then to the right getting on an empty patch. That must have been 1st check, as I could see a bunch of paper at the entrance of the jungle. Soon I caught up with the others and was told that there was a short run on yellow paper and a long run on pink paper. They all wondered where the yellow paper might be. Overtaking the tail of the runners, I found the paper after climbing a quite steep hill.
Still contemplating whether to go for the long run, I thought I needed to do a bit more to get rid of the extra few pounds I put on. So along I went on the ridge for quite a while until there was a left turn going down to the swamp area. I assumed that must have been 2nd check, as I met Alice in Wonderland and a few other hens coming from the other side.

Crossing the swamp, I thought it will be the out trail, but we turned right and “ OH NO” they made us climb that damn hill!!!! Finally after huffing and puffing I made it to the top, thinking “YES” we will turn left for the out trail, but was wrong again!! So along it went, following another ridge for quite a while until at some point the paper went to the right (it looked like another check). So down it went into the more dense jungle, a really beautiful trail with lush greens. Along the way we were crossing some streams and finally reaching the main trail.

“Oh No” not another hill to climb, but at least it wasn’t as steep as the previous one. Up on the ridge we turned right and were basically on the out trail. It took us another 10 to 15 minutes until we were out.

Thank you hares for this great run.

The shout-up was quite short; there were not many hens around.
After a down down for the hares and a few announcements and jokes, some key chains were handed out by the hares to the lucky finder of the green packets during the run.
Then it was down to the serious business of eating. All the hashers had brought a plate. We had dips and dippers, salads, Indian delights, quiche and a whole range of different desserts. It was all in all a very sumptuous buffet.
On On

Peahen (and in absence the honorary hash member Juergen)

Next Run: Lucky Gardens: We will try some different routes, but you will see some pink and yellow paper from last weeks run, which could not be avoided. Please stay on white paper!!!
A big “Thank You” to Satu Lagi and Eastern Promise for helping out!!!

RUN NO, 2143 - CROCODILE BEACH

The Site
Wina happy she has given away the hashit

The Hares - Call Girl/Pickled Lilli and Ryvita

RUN NO. 2143
DATE: 15 SEP 2009
SITE: CROCODILE BEACH
HARES: Call Girl/Pickled Lilli/Ryvita
HENS: 46 CHICKS: 4
FRONT HORN: Mad Marg BACK HORN: Cheryl

It’s Tuesday again, can you believe it ? I’m sure the weeks go quicker near the equator or is it just because it’s Puasa the fasting month and I can finish work at 2pm what bliss this month is and I can only wish it was all year round. This month I don’t care how far away the hash is there’s lots of time spare for me not to be arriving late or with only 2 mins spare to get boots on and sign in….. or my friendly co-hares sign me in but don’t tell anyone who matters!!! AND far more important there’s time for a gossip before the hash. Well this week we had it all, lots of time to drive over, pick up Cheryl and Survivor for a leisurely drive to Crocodile Beach, time to catch up on the gossip and news from them both on the way and time for me to four wheel drive the sandy track to deliver Survivor as close as possible to the site before even thinking of getting boots laced up and signing in!! What more could a Tuesday ladies hasher want? A tent and chairs?… we had that too, a lovely sea breeze?… we had that too, drinks on ice? … we had that too thanks to some determined members of the mismanagement and helpers carrying everything along the beach track, well done ladies, it was even suggested we just sit down and stay there on site who needed a hash with such a lovely setting and drinks to boot!!! What sort of hashers are we breeding now fancy suggesting such a ridiculous idea….. Would have been rather pleasant though!!
To the hash oh yes that’s what I’m suppose to be writing about! Well before 5.15 the JM was waving those horny things around requesting as only she can that someone would love to take them off her and carry them round the jungle? But who would be brave today? Mad Marg stepped rather quickly into the role of front horn and then my co-hare Cheryl bravely accepted back horn, that’s what happens when you give CFBT teachers a holiday!! The JM then told us to expect a shortish run but very thorny, which seemed to galvanize some hens into activity showing rather eager movement towards the in trail, until it was explained to them that she’d said thorny not horny good job Dizzy wasn’t about this week we could have been flattened in the rush!!
5.15 pm came, well on someone’s watch anyway as mine was saying 5.20 by the time we headed off under the tent and into the scrubby jungle at the edge of the beach. Up we scrambled and twisted through the vines, roots and grasses, in fact we twisted so much that one of the horns was seen to twist completely out and fall back down the trail but I’ve promised not to mention which horn!!
The trail wandered around and through rough ground and then took a bit of a dive down a bank when we heard 1st check being called, almost instantly the on was called, so who found it I have no idea where it was exactly I have no idea? Well done to whoever it was. We then found ourselves going up hill which was a surprise considering we were just off the beach, climbing and treading very carefully over the many thorns we had been warned about we climbed to the top. We later found out Miss Pink had had a very close encounter with them but luckily managed to survive with only a couple embedded in the flesh. In fact we all survived miraculously considering the number of thorns we had all clambered over or under on this hash. The trail then started heading towards the coast road which could be heard very distinctly and seemed to be causing some confusion. First we heard the call for checking as we approached the road, followed quite quickly by the On-On call to the right and then to be followed by a second lot of checking from here!! Were the front runners lost, confused or what? The noise of the road was causing the soft spoken tones of the Ladies Hash to be completely lost to the further a field hashers. Melissa was there to refind the On trail which I must say wasn’t particularly well laid through by the front hens and back horn was there honking for all she was worth to bring up those still on the check luckily the sound of the horn could be heard over the incessant noise of the coast road.
The trail lead us out and on to the edge of the coast road to hop, skip and jump along towards the fisheries buildings, where we took a sharp right back into the jungle and headed towards the sounds of the sea. So much better than the road!! Down the trail lead us along the fencing of the fisheries buildings and with a graceful and completely controlled slide down the last slope, hardly dirtying the seat of the faithful hash pants we dropped on to the beach again. Was there only 2 checks forgot to check in the splendour of the scene that greeted us as we stumbled out of the jungle back on to the beach, the hares had even laid on a spectacular sunset!
Tearing ourselves away from the beauty we jogged down thook out te beach to catch Wina collecting sea shells before being back on site to prepare for the shout up.
There was one guest a visitor from Auz called Cheryl who was warmly welcomed and then a down down for Call Girl for her 50th hash, well done. We had a great joke from Never Wrong and we listened to the pros and cons of taking on a job for next years mis-management (committee), you can do it volunteer and keep YOUR hash going!!
While the Hash-it was soundly delivered by Wina to Legally Blond and Fertile Myrtle for rabbiting in the ranks during the shout-up.We were then treated to a sumptuous spread of delights from the hares, thank you ladies for the run, the food and the setting of a very enjoyable Tuesday hash.

Que Rain again at approximately 3.30 pm, is this a regular order of rain, I wonder, so as deter fairweather hashers from attending.. ?? if it was... it failed well tonight.

Having never been to the Mentiri site before, I arrived in good time (early!) as it was easy to find (for most). I did hear that a few hens had driven past the site, and some had ended up close to Bandar, but we all found it eventually.

The run itself was in the words as ‘ A good running trail and some great VIEWS..’(no mention of HILLS, but in hindsight maybe the word VIEW was a clue?)

Hill; noun
1.a natural elevation of the earth's surface, smaller than a mountain.
2. an incline, esp. in a road: This old jalopy won't make it up the next hill.
3. an artificial heap, pile, or mound: a hill made by ants.
So at least it wasn’t a mountain that we climbed, or a hill made by ants!

Although I did feel the description below was more akin to us walkie talkies at the back:
over the hill,
a. relatively advanced in age.
b. past one's prime.

Anyway.. where was I? The trail was very well marked, and that’s always a great help, for someone like me, whose glasses steam up thus rendering me half blind...
It was a well trodden path that we followed. But not one I was familiar with, although I did vaguely recognize the reservoir from a previous hash. The hills were certainly hilly, and I think we were grateful for the fact there were ropes there to help haul ourselves up, and the downs were definitely down !

The views from the top of these Bukits ~ hills were stunning.. sadly I didn’t have the camera with me, due to the chances of precipitation! But it makes you realize how small Brunei is when you are up high, looking down. Also there were some beautiful plants on the way round, a few wild white orchids, and some pitcher plants.

The shout up was at Madmargz small abode (myself, Bet & Kellie all had serious house envy!) We were entertained by Madmargz & Bunnygirl’s rendition of Marilyn Monroe’s (or was it Betty Boops?) “I wanna be loved by you”. I think Peter Peckers will to inflate was restored as the ladies gave him a peck on the cheek!

First time guests; Sally who has taken a long time to think about coming to the hash, and will return, and Suzanna from Hamburg, who when asked if she will return to the hash said a defiant: NO!

Special awards went to Boel (Call Girl), Anna (Ryvita), Diana (Beluga) and myself (Pickled Lilli) as we all received our hash names. Hashit was shared between Call girl, Beluga and Wina for various crimes!

AND - a special welcome back to Jane Woolley - for one night only...
And Peahens ‘F word’ birthday last week! (50)
Thanks to the hares for a great run and fab food too!

When the heavens opened up at 3 o'clock I did not want to venture outside, let alone do a hash run in slippery mata mata but as I had the softies and had to collect the signs and write up the words i was obligated to be there.

I arrived at the site and realised it was only the dedicated all weather hashers who had shown up. Fortunately when the run started the rain had stopped and at least it was a pleasantly cool evening.

We proceeded up and up along a not too steep climb, then through bracken all the while looking out for pitcher plants and colourful fungi as promised in the words. I did manage to spot some small pitcher plants but spent most of the run watching my feet in the slippery and muddy conditions.

We crossed waterways which luckily had not been turned into raging torrents after all the rain, there were downhill slopes which proved tricky in the mud and the hills were mainly gentle climbs until the final hill which was steep and seemed to go on and on., but the view along the ridge with all the mist was delightful.

On the way out we met up with Peewee and Ruthless Pursuit who after arriving late decided to go in backwards. They did well as they completed the whole run.

First and second checks were found by newly married virgin checker Julia. Well Done!

It turned out to be a very pleasurable run. At the shout up the Virgin Hares and born again virgin hares were given a down down and Melissa a new member who has proved she is definately not a fair weather hasher was welcomed.

Speedo excellently told a joke which is in the running for joke of the year.

When the call for the hashit was announced Wina volunteered for it and tried desperately to be given it but it was denied so Tania is still stuck with the chook foe another week. Maybe this week she will be able to get rid of it of it to a deserving victim. Thank you Wina and Rozi for the delicious curries and tumpi and the colourful Ketupats which they made.

A hot still day,
No wind no breeze at play,
Wondered how this run is going to be like,
For us who hadn’t eaten or drank since last night,
Up in the hills parked on a narrow road,
I looked around for my compatriot,
To discover when I called she just woke up,
She said to me, “Don’t wait up”
With hens raring to go,
Along with several chicks in tow,
Off we went when the horn blew,
I went with a light jog feeling whoop de do!
This isn’t so bad after all,
To hash during the month of fast,
Within five minutes the front horn called,
“Checking checking!” was heard by all.
Front horn Anna asked me to check back,
Rest of the hens were coming up the track,
When “On paper! On paper!” was heard,
Ready Mix the one who discovered,
On on,On on we go,
We met The Dutchess,
Who warned us,"Watch out for slippery stones ahead",
Glamour is somewhere close I bet.
I took it easy, nice and slow,
Not knowing how far to go,
With Pee Wee sailing by,
She looked like she could fly,
As I trudged on,
Glamour, we stumbled upon,
Oooh she's in deep,
Fortunately the trail weren't steep,
Will she continue til the end I pondered,
I wasn't the only one who wondered.
Whoever said 'you can't cross the same river twice',
Have not done a hash in their life,We crossed not once, twice, or trice(?)
I lost count which was pretty wise,
Concentrating to keep feet as dry as possible,
When crossing where ever I was able,
passed by a woodcutter site from the looks of it,
Bunny Girl almost tripped from a trap not far from it,
Fellow hens wondered if meant for wild boars,
As we passed by the numerous bamboo groves.
Then Ready Mix announced,
"We're almost out,
"My flagging battery revved,
Yes, I'm saved!
Wina turned up in her blooming pants,
Cow! I thought as she did a little dance,
Teased her for missing out,
And proceeded to tell me why she was all pout.
Better head to Julia's to break the fast,
Food and water, at long last!
The shout up was fun aplenty,
Heard lots of different stories,
Three new chicks were introduced,
Quiche Fanny Waxer was the most amused,
By us all by far the most novel,
Tania still stuck with the chicken squeak,
Was it Dizzy that took the dog's squeaky chick?
We attacked the food with rice and homemade bread,
Thanks Julia and Tania for the filling spread,
Then Julia's wedding album was passed around,
So pretty she was in her red gown,
Love, happiness and not a single frown,
We wish her all the best in married life,
For now she is someone's wife,
I forgot to say Glamour did go all the way,
She's the white rabbit that Alice couldn't carry,
I left the night feeling great,
One by one, everyone soon dissipate,
Until the next gathering of us hens,I bid you adieu until then...

Run No. 2139

*****
The hens all gathered at a familiar place—Ruthless Pursuit’s backyard! Before the run, we heard the sad news that Virginie Staal’s niece was starting chemo that day, so our thoughts went out to her.

We started out on the familiar walk up the road to the turnoff. Walking more slowly, or gossiping more enthusiastically—depending on your point of view—meant that I was very surprised to catch up to the front runners on the top of a small hill. It appeared that the run was not going as it was supposed to! Front hens had run out of paper while marking through to the place the hash ‘should’ have gone!

We need to go back to first check (*huh? We’ve passed first check?*) was the cry, but no-one appeared to be entirely sure where first check had actually been. Bunny Girl’s cries of ‘horn, horn, who’s got the horn?” Were answered with “you’ve seen my husband, so you know it’s not me!” by someone I shall allow to remain nameless.

After some time spent fruitlessly searching, the very devioius back check was finally revealed after a few phonecalls. Hens can be tricky creatures!! The rest of the hash was relatively straightforward with only swamps and scratchy patches to contend with. Getting back to base we were all reminded that the on-on was at Pee Wee’s new place (*palace—I’d move in, I’m sure there’s room!!*)

Before the shout-up were were treated to a skinny dipping Dizzy checking out the pool. At shout-up, Ruthless Pursuit had abandoned us for an affair at the High Comm so Pee Wee was the sole hare available to give our thanks to. Two new members were welcomed (well, one new one—Monique, and one returning—Hot Lips). “There’s your first stiffie” announced Bunny Girl mysteriously, before correcting herself and handing out the welcome drink.

Alice in Wonderland celebrated 300 runs and Pee Wee 100 runs, both giving their cash to charity (what a caring bunch!) Mad Marg was thanked for the
leadership she has provided over the last month, and congratulated on her new boobs—very perky. Some funny jokes were told, and then Julia was given some very helpful advice on her new marriage (*’Commit murder and be out sooner’ had to be my personal favourite.*) She has threathened us (will treat us) with the wedding photos next week. Congratulations on the happy event!!

Unfortunately, no-one was given hashshit so the lucky previous holder (that would be ME) gets to hang on to it for another week. The food provided was delicious and the rest of the evening passed in a pleasant haze.

Just as an aside, while waiting for the hash to begin this evening I was asked by Julia if I would set a hash with her ‘one day’. With ‘one day’ flating serenely in the future somewhere I said sure. The future quickly zoomed into much nearer proximity, with “it’s at Dadap sometime” plucking my murky memory of last week’s hash when I was asking how to get there because it was in the words for two week’s time—that made it NEXT week now! Dazed and confused at just how fast time moves, I smiled politely. See you there.

One way of keeping dry - GM under the table

FRONT HORN: Tango BACK HORN: Tina I

OK, time to write the words. Just got back from a lovely evening with Possum, Peahen and Magic, so if these don’t make sense – blame them!

Plenty of Hens were gathered around the tent waiting for the off. A quick phone call to Trailblazer confirmed that we were to embark on fairly long run. With no ‘big’ hills. Yah…….. so with Tango on front horn, off we ran at 5.15. We were a fair way in before first check, which was readily found by Mad Margz (MM). I think we call that ‘Hashcraft’. So off we ran, and yes, it was good running trails and fairly flat. However the odd ‘small’ hill started to raise its head. And we could sense the weather closing in. Dark clouds descended, and as we were under a fair whack of canopy, light was disappearing fast.

Second check came along the river. More Hashcraft as Mad Margz was sure it was ahead along the river, so I followed as instructed and indeed she was right. So on we went, and it was at this point that more hills began to appear. And they didn’t seem so small – maybe because we were covering a lot of ground. Up, up, up we went, yet it was a good 20 minutes before we hit upon the final check. We kind of had a handle on where we were by this point, and MM found it on ahead. As it was still getting darker and darker the four of us at the front elected to stay together. A fair bit further on we hit the ridge – yay! On our way out. MM, Tango, Anna and myself had a fairly brisk run out as we didn’t want to be caught in the rain.

The rain started to pan down as we were signing out. It was dark, cold and pretty miserable. Ruthless Pursuit, Magic and a couple of others came out next, and the rest filtered out over the next half hour. I struggled to change in the car, Magic quite sensibly bolted! As I got back to the tent, it appeared that a few were left in. Bunny Girl made a few calls (we are a caring sharing hash!) And we established that most were ok and on their way out. Sadly, Diyana and Tracey were in communicado. So we decided to wish MM a happy birthday and avail ourselves of the delicious cake as she had to ‘hash ‘n’ dash’.

Thankfully the girls appeared, wet and a bit bedraggled, but in good health and spirits! The shout up was well conducted by our returning JM Bunny Girl, there were a couple of first time guests – one of which we were truly honoured to host. Road Runner’s sister had come along, I guess to see what it was that she loved so much! And I’m sure we all hope to see her again soon. Duchess celebrated her 71st birthday and 1100th run – she truly is the most decorated Hen! Well done! The rain just didn’t really let up, but we sat around and enjoyed the hash camaraderie as usual. Madam Sin was on particularly good ‘tidying’ form, and she crushed a can of mine that was actually full. I think I took that as a sign to go! On on! Pee Wee

As I got to the site, having dropped off the words earlier, a row of cars neatly parked up one side of the "hill" could be seen - It meant having to park down the bottom and trudge all the way up. Anyway, a good warm up, and soon the horn was heard and hens started up the usual cut.

We had been warned about traps along the trails and were on a look out for these. We soon dipped left down from the ridge. The hares had indicated that it would be a big down followed by a big up...... we were soon going down, and down, and down. So far, so good. We then had a small up and soon first check was called., and on we went. Then paper ran out and the front runners went on ahead and found some paper which did not seem to be layed "correctly" and of character of experienced hares that had laid the run. We trudge on and soon found ourselves at the Markucing ridge. Hens went left and right, looked down tracks, but no paper. Time was ticking on, with the whole pack together - albeit a bit small - as quite a few hens were still on holiday, the decision was made that we should turn around and go back the way we came.

Moans and groans were heard all the way, as we had been down down down, the obvious up up and up could not be avoided. All were out with hens exhaused and most reminded of the last hash at the same site when the hares had lost their reccee paper and we had to turn around as well.

GM Madmarg's call for the hashit was made easy as Tania's phone went just as shout up began, and Christine was glad to pass this on.

Thank you Alison, Cheryl and Sue for the hot baked potatoes with all sorts of toppings which went down a treat and the evening continued as usual under the cloud of haze.

RUN NO. 2136 - SUBOK 67

Rodzi performing her assignment in earnest!
The Loan Service Team enjoying a nice evening before the haze! Bet, Kellie and Tina I

The Hares - Tania & Hash Baby

DATE: 25 July 2009
SITE: Subok 67
HARES: Tania/Hash Baby
HORNS: Tango/Trailblazer
GUESTS: Mary, Gill & Spot

Arriving at my favourite hash site (not) with anticipation of lots of hilly terrain, I found the words described 2 runs – white paper for a 1 hour RUN (yeah right!) up and down the ridges of Subok, and yellow paper for a revitalizing 30 minute stroll for the hens who have had a hard day (that’s me). Oh no! It was my turn to write the words and my co – hares had some great excuses for doing the short run, so I got the short straw and the long run. So off we all went like mountain goats up the first cliff face and continued to go up, up and up until we hit an open ridge with great 360 degree views. Apparently, this was where the short walkers were meant to turn around and head back down and out on another track.

Just as I hit the summit, Suzie said they were checking below and left, so I thought I had better check out the track to the right – found paper, but it was dubiously old, so I went back and down left to join the rest of the long runners. The call of ‘on paper’ was heard a long way distant, so I continued on down the steep slope until I got to a large log bridge. Apparently, first check was found just before this bridge by most of the front runners because there wasn’t much gap between the check and the on paper.

The hash continued up and down for quite a while until it wound its way down past a waterfall. After that, I really confirmed how unfit and tired I was as the walk became a bit of a blur, just putting one foot in front of the other. All I could focus on was making it out and a lot of the scenery was wasted on me. The vague sound of a distant horn was heard, waking me out of my reverie – that must be second check found (Pee Wee), but that meant there was still a long way to go.

After a very long, steep down my knees were really starting to complain, so I was relieved to follow a stream on the valley floor for a good while. We crossed over at two lovely little pools and then crossed over a larger river and oh joy, began the long ascent back up. At least the flat section had given me time to recover a little. Next thing I knew, I heard somebody whistling and soon came across Alison, looking for Spot, who had taken off before 5.15, been seen sporadically by the front runners, but had failed to come out. I was hoping this wasn’t going to be a repeat performance like Molly’s 4 day jungle adventure. After walking through some long grass and along an old asphalt road, we at least were out.

Alison, sister in law Gill and Cheryl all headed back in a bit later after reports of sightings of Spot. GM Mad Marg started the shout up without them. The hares were given their down down – it was actually a lovely hash, thank you. I must say there are some beautiful trails in Subok, it’s just a pity they’re not user friendly for the old knees. No matter what I think on the way round, I love the scenery and it is good for me having to push myself sometimes because I know I have to get out.

First time guest was Mary from Melbourne who was visiting Mad Marg; Hash Baby was the only July birthday hasher; Rodzi read out 2 jokes about Billy; Pee Wee gave an announcement about the Boy’s Hash 090909th run and Nellie was offering a short term amah. Everyone was perfectly behaved and no hashit was given. Just after the shout up, by which time it was well dark, the 3 rescuers returned with Spot. So their short walk didn’t turn out so short after all. Everyone was just thankful that Spot had been found. The evening was rounded out with bread buns, chicken and coleslaw and some yummy desserts, especially the apricot crumble. Thank you ladies for the food. Yet another good hash night had by all….. RUN NO. 2135 - DIPLO

The hashit chicken family
The Hares

Tania celebration 50 runs

RUN NO 2135
DATE: 21 JULY 2009
SITE: DIPLO
HARES: MADMARG/DIANA P/SUZIE
HENS: 31 CHICKS: 1
FRONT HORN: Tango BACK HORN: Eastern Promise

Once again there were not many hens joining the run on a lovely Tuesday evening in Diplo. With our JM having a rest on holiday and our GM as a hare there was a bit of milling around waiting to be organised. At last Dizzy, Eastern Promise and Tango sorted out the horns and then we were off.

As we started out I always seem to forget about the hills in Diplo because it starts so flat. The words spoke of nice trails and a few hills so I took heart in that as we continued up and along the ridge.

As I’m one of the walkie talkies(or just a bit slow) I never saw the checks but I assume our fast front runners found it because we stayed on paper. I did notice a lot of going over and under logs and after a while I was trying to think of a word to describe this sort of running(steeplechase came to mind but I don’t think that was it.) At about the half way point there was a break in the jungle and Tania and I stopped to notice the view – of the development of the Sungai Akar tip. A bit brown still, unfortunately.

Anyway we continued on through the jungle eventually beginning to notice that the logs had changed into vines. I started thinking about Tarzan then, but didn’t see him. We made our way through the jungle back to Diplo coming out exactly the way we went in. A good, challenging but not too hard, run.

With the call of the chook summoning for Hashquiet the shoutup was short and sweet. Must be that new chook! The hares were thanked – well done to Suzie, our virgin hare, as well as Tango and Eastern Promise for being front and back horns. It was very quiet with no first time guests and no new members. Congratulations to Tania for completing 50 runs. She needed a double down down because the head in the wine goblet was too big (although she said she likes it that way).

Smurf told us a joke about a man and his devotion to a sheep ( or was it to his personal needs?) which was very funny and then we came to the hashit. The hashit chook has obviously been a bit lonely because it now has another chook and a baby chook to keep it company during the week. The hashit was given to Christine this week for not signing out. Kelly, who got it last week, was unable to deliver it due to injury so her guest who got her in trouble last week, Mel, did an excellent job of delivering the hashit to a stripped down for action Christine. Well taken!

We then sat down and got stuck in to a lovely meal of chilli(?)and rice which was delicious, followed by some watermelon which was very cleverly cut into tree shapes so we didn’t get our fingers messy. And then enjoyed some great conversation and drinks into the night...... On On

RUN NO. 2134 - DST

RUN NO. 2134
SITE: DST
HARES: Trailblazer/Smurf/Satu-Lagi
FRONT HORN: Ruthless Pursuit BACK HORN: Eastern Promise
HENS: 29 CHICKS: 2

I was fortunately given a lift to the hash with MagMargz – we noted the location of the signs, and arrived in plenty of time to have a chat with everyone – not difficult as there were so few of us left after the mass exodus away on school holidays. Front and back horns were dually handed out and beep beep off we ran/ walked into a familiar maze of ferns zig zagging this way and that with the sound of front and back horn keeping us marching onwards…

First challenge to cross a small swampy area where the hares had kindly laid some logs to prevent our feet from getting wet..ha ha …one little wobble and I was straight in up to my calves …well what’s hashing all about other than to get wet and muddy? First check on on back, also the second if I remember correctly..by the third, I am too far behind to hear.

We dipped down into the jungle and then took a loop to the right…by this time Sonia and Eastern Promise were comparing notes as to which part of the trail was familiar and had been used before. Soon we were sauntering down a familiar stretch of unused road chatting away but also enjoying the beautiful jungle each side of us.

All in all a nice gentle run and a good shout up by the GM… One guest almost unnoticed as a). She hadn't been introduced at the start of the run …Hashit!!! And b) she was wearing a hash T. Shirt Hmmm! Also for the hashit! ! Was Monique For not signing out … a gentle watering of the feet by Eastern Promise and then when they thought it was too good to be true – a big splash over their heads…brrrrrrr!

Two good jokes – loved the one about Johnny’s letters to God then we all enjoyed a wonderful vegetable curry and halleluiah there were so few of us there, there was enough for second helpings….

RUN NO. 2133 - MATA MATA

The hares On-Up and Diva

From a distance

In the jungle

The Duchess

Boomerang and On-Up with their farewell gifts

Our new chook that talks to you with JM Bunny Girl

DATE: 7 JULY 2009
SITE: Mata-Mata
HARES: Diva/On-Up
HENS: 37 CHICKS: 2
FRONT HORN: Magic Roundabout
BACK HORN: Boomerang

Some of us might have been ‘Hashed out’ and ‘beered out’ after the 7in7, but, true to form, it was Tuesday night, therefore LADIES NIGHT, so Mata Mata it was. Possum and I meandered up towards the ridge, checking the pitcher plants on the way. FROPs don’t worry if you didn’t see them as you sped past – they are all fine and healthy!! We stopped and talked to the Duchess. Congratulations to you on a very fine performance on the Limbang stage, dancing with her MJ hat, and looking grand. A true hasher indeed!

The horn sounded as we headed towards the jungle and we soon found The Duchess sitting on a ledge having a rest as we all trotted past her. Soon found Glamour who ha found 1st check before deciding to turn around.

We trudged up, up and up and wondered if the hares were trying to compete wih the hills we have had to contend with all week on the 7 in 7's., and was glad when we eventually went in the jungle as the heat was just getting unbearable.

2nd check was found by Satu Lagi and all the checks were excellent as it cerainly kept the coop together as the front runners were soon behind but not for long as they were soon passing the walkie talkies.

The trails were dry and even the streams were not running too fast, and a bit dry compared to the other side of Mata-Mata.

And so to the on on. Hares Diva and On Up were thanked for a fine run, along with horns. First time guests and new member welcomed and 50th potty to Diva.

Then Bunny Girl, Mad Marg and Tango led our thanks to the organising committee for the success of last weeks 7in7, a sterling effort – well done to everyone, and then we were subjected to a final rendition of “Ladies Night”

The evening then became sad!! Farewells were offered to On Up and Boomerang who had run their last run with us – thanks too must be given to them for their kind words about us!! The library girls gave Boomerang a lovely goblet and both were given a delicious cake. On Up entertained us with a funny joke and Possum told one I didn’t understand!! We wish you well ladies, and in Boomerang’s case, you’ll come back!!! After yummy curry was served the evening settled into a pleasant gossip under the stars, with amber nectar flowing.

And soon there were seven, staying for a ‘satu lagi’ in lieu of Satu Lagi who had to leave early! Oh what a shame! A while later, the stars went in and the rain began to fall, a ‘dua lagi’ had to be taken as we couldn’t possibly drive in the rain!! Then Possum decided it was time to go back to her nest. The only problem was, her car didn’t want to leave its mud bed. The Magnificent Seven leapt into action. Magic jumped into her truck, Madam Sin got a tow rope out of Trev and we all got into action. Pee Wee, Trailblazer, Hash Baby, Madam Sin and I pushed the car, Magic pulled, Possum revved, the rope snapped! We tried again, this time, while tying the rope Madam Sin had to multi-task as all H3 hashers do regularly, and perform an Indiana Jones roll away in the mud to avoid the reversing Magic – all very dramatic. Again, no luck. We sat in the back of the car to add weight, but Possum’s car refused to move. At this point, she decided to abandon the car and go home with Magic. Meanwhile, in the torrential rain, covered in mud, we settled for a ‘tiga lagi’ (purely for medicinal purposes by now – we needed to get warm!!) Eventually, wrapped in towels we cleared the site, and wended our muddy, weary way home in the rain!!
OH WHAT A NIGHT!!!
On On

NEXT RUN: 14TH July
SITE: DST
HARES: Smurf/Trailblazer/Satu Lagi - STAY on fresh paper!
