RUN NO. 2075

DATE: 27 MAY 2008
HARES: Not Yet/Mama San
FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN/WHISTLER: Sarong
HENS: 29 CHICKS: 3

It was a calm sunny afternoon as we assembled at DST. Had the hens been here since that time we got kicked out from the coastal highway site and had to re-group at DST for a live run?

Well, the hares promised a nice and easy run, so we eagerly set off at 5:15 with Carol on front horn and Sarong on back “whistle.” We started off in the woods behind the tent, and some of us who had been on a hetero hash a few months ago were wondering if we would take a similar route (an infamous hash in my memory as a group of us were on wrong paper and came out at 9:00!....but that’s another story….) Would the hares lead us to that same waist-high swampy stream? It seemed so, and sure enough, I arrived at the water just as 1st check was being called just beyond. Been there, done that – call me a coward but I didn’t want to cross this time if I didn’t have to. (At the hetero we waded that water more than once as we went back and forth trying to find the on paper which turned out to be back.)

Maybe the on paper today would be at the same place? Ready Mix had the same idea and so we both ran back to a trail that led to the road, where she found the paper. Some hens had doubts and were afraid to follow, as the paper was wider than the tiny strips the hares left as a sample – after warning us to stay on correct paper. But we did find a clump of tiny strips hidden behind a bush, so we definitely were on the right track. (Later we found out that the hares wanted us to follow a mix of thin and wide paper.)

Down the road we went and soon heard 2nd check being called. Poor Carol must have been lonely at this (and every other) check as few people went ahead, figuring it must be a back check across the wide open lunar landscape area. Our guess was right – 2nd check was soon found by Lee and others (didn’t see who) after crossing the open.

3rd check was only a short distance away, and it was another back check up and down the hill and to a road. So far it had been a dry run (except for the unlucky ones checking ahead at the first swamp!), but just when we thought we had made it through unscathed, a bit of sludge had to be crossed. Oh well, what’s a hash without mud??

Back at the tent, while waiting for everyone to arrive and the shout up to begin, some hens were engaged in bottom-checking. Comparing insect bites, I heard. Perhaps a competition to see who had the most? Not sure…

At the shout up we welcomed first time guest Claire, who hails from Glasgow. Apparently she’s already been warned that there are usually a few more hills than this at the average hash, so don’t get your hopes up that it will be this “nice and easy” every week. (Having said that, next week is Rimba and there aren’t too many hills there either!) Claire was brought by Maria, who’s a fairly new member herself – well done Maria!

Thanks to the hares for lovely vegetarian food, which was enjoyed by all as the sun set on another balmy Brunei evening.

RUN NO. 2074

DATE: 19 May 2008
SITE: Kapok Kanan
HARES: Smurf/Madam Sin/Maria T
HENS: 35 CHICKS: 6
FRONT HORN: Pee Wee BACK HORN: Alice In Wonderland

When I arrived at the site there were very few hens but more arrived later. Soon it was time to set off, and as I called “listen up!” suddenly Pee Wee (Who? I think must have been in a hurry to dash off as usual) took over before I could say anything more. “The Bomba men had been in the jungle looking for lost Korean tourists but did not find the poor tourists but, instead, they left lots of white paper in the jungle. In order to avoid confusion the Hares used small strips of green paper instead of the normal white." Eventually, I managed to get in and called “On On” and off we went; I then saw Running Bare who was just signing in. So I quickly went back to my car to collect bells to give to her as that was her last run. I finally set off behind all the runners not intending to go very far but soon Diana caught up with me. As we were strolling up the hill, and much to our surprise, Magi Morris called from behind us asking us to wait for her. All three of us agreed that we weren’t going all the way. The jungle however was very tempting so we went on further than we had intended and met Glamour and Veronica who confirmed that it was indeed a lovely run and the jungle was very beautiful.

You see, the main ingredients of a good run in Bruneian jungle are:-
One or two hills,
A few thorn bushes,
Slippery trails and steep edges,
A good patch of razor grass.
Mix them and spice with rain and streams.

Then you have a perfect run. So it was not surprising that this run was no exception. It was Serasa Hill after all. After first check and a few thorns, slippery bits and steep edges I managed to persuade Diana that I wasn’t prepared to continue. Besides I had to be back early to prepare for the shout out as my partner in crime Sarah was away.

According to Ready Mix the hills, thorns, and slippery trails continued, then she and Jane Woolley found the second check. Jane stayed on paper and Ready Mix continued to call, “Back on Ahead! Back on Ahead!” which apparently caused some confusion hence the sketch by Carol and Pee Wee at the shout out. Well done girls.
Three Hens, Glamour, Tango and Smurf celebrated their birthdays. And thanks to Pee Wee for the cake.

When I called for Hashit, Alison the current hashit holder came forward and pointed out that as she did not usually get the hashit, she was very anxious to see what had been written about her. However, she was disappointed as nothing was written in the words. In addition, NEXT WEEK’S RUN read:- HARES: DST; SITE: Not Yet and Mama San. Well, Struth is away at the moment.
Thanks Maria for the good Nosh.

It was very sad to have to say goodbye to yet another front runner who has added some excitement to the ladies hash with her hash attire. This was none other than Running Bare. So we said goodbye to Vania and wished her all the best in Manila.

RUN NO. 2073

DATE: 13 MAY 2008
SITE: SPG 672 KOTA BATU
HARES: Madmarg/Norma/Dizzy/Nicole
HENS: 42 CHICKS:1
FRONT HORN: Lee
BACK HORN: Naj

Here we were again back to Kota Batu. As Sarah C said “Another bloody hill!” Indeed! Lee valiantly took the horn, and at 5.15 sharp she blew and off we went. Of course the only way was up! Carol and Pee Wee, impatient little blighters that they are, turned into SCBs from the word go, and took a slightly shorter way up to the ridge. Once up there, we ran along beautiful trails which I am told are usually accessed from 702.

We had a decent run before we got to first check. It took us a while to realise where the check was being called from, Lee was calling like a good’un, not so everyone else………apart from Boel! Here we have found ourselves a damn good hasher – good calling girl! Carol found the on-paper, and although we could hear her call it, could we work out where she was? NO! It took a good 5 minutes of calling, yelling, straining our ears, to work out that it was in fact on ahead, a sneaky ridge or two foxing us! Off we ran again through bracken - glad I wasn’t wearing shorts.

The whippet-like front runners found and called 2nd check through very quickly. The run took us down to the beautiful big trees and past a stone wall – could this be the origins of the name Kota Batu (Stone Fortress)? It was a lovely trail down, past a small waterfall and we started climbing up…….and up……and up……and……..I could go on and on, but the only word would be up! Ropes were there to guide us up one of the steepest trails we have done for a long time, stunningly picturesque, but damn hard work. This then led us across the ridge and back down (or shall I say slid down) to where we had come from; my kind of run – good length, and intense!

We had a lovely on-site here, a stunning view over the Brunei river and plenty of fruit bats flying above. Dizzy had very thoughtfully got us all a very fetching hat for her 123rd run! Well done and thank-you Dizzy! Well done also to Linda who celebrated 50 runs.

The JMs gave all those involved for the Nash Hash a pat on the back – well done ladies! Lovely makan was served – thank you again hares! From there we spent the evening, under darkening skies, gentle camaraderie and light banter to wile away the hours. Until the rain of course, which obviously delayed our departure…….. On on!

RUN NO. 2072

RUN NO. 2072
HARES: Sarong/Jenni/Tracey
FRONT HORN: Anna
BACK HORN: Jane
HENS: 38

We descended upon Diplo once again. The usual rabble, searching out hashing boots, insect repellent, water carriers etc. At 5.15 the horn was very ably sounded by Anna, a recent trainee who is going great guns! Off we shot, for about 20 seconds before we realised we had gone off paper, duh! We were craftily lead in through the middle, not left and up onto to the ridge as we so often do. Drier conditions made a pair of trainers a good thing, unfortunately changing mid-hash is not an option.

We finally stumbled on first check. Not so many checkers tonight, and if I remember correctly, I think the on paper was found and called through by Carol (who was supposed to be taking it easy tonight……). Forgive me if I have made a mistake with that shaky recollection. On we went, front horn bounding through at a cracking pace. More of those lovely Diplo inclines to test our mettle, and to second check. After a bit of intellectual checking debate, the on paper was found by Angela, back up to the left.

Then lo and behold but a mere 5 minutes later we were checking again; the paper had led us up and over a ridge and down the other side and there we met the check. This proved to be back up and down to the right and was, I think, found by Trish. The trails were much clearer from here on, and provided us with a chance to stretch our legs and have a bit of a run. The hens were pretty much together on this run, checks having bunched us up on more than one occasion.

A sneaky fourth check was added, and speedily found by Sarah C (so speedily in fact that she couldn’t speak when she got out). A grinding hill brought us out, in pretty good time (especially for a Sarong run).
The shout-up commenced, and the JMs informed us that it was World Chicken Day (or something like that) and they had thoughtfully done a little lucky draw for us, with lots of…..erm…..chicken themed prizes! Thank-you JMs!

Sarong and Jenny celebrated special runs – Sarong runs and Jenni runs. Well done you two! And thank you for the makan. Under darkening skies, the gentle merriment and bonding we are so fond of continued, punctuated by final rehearsals for our nash hash extravaganza! And finally another hash successfully faded into the night. On on! Scribe: Pee Wee

RUN NO. 2071

DATE: 29 APRIL 2008
SITE: Bukit Serdang, Kota Batu—Yacht Club end
HENS: 37
HARES:Dizzy
FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Tina I

Hash night and the real race is on, trying to get out the door with dogs or kids escapaing and making sure I have enough cash for coupons, oh guess, I should take some water. Destination Kota Batu, not sure which end but try to keep one eye out for the dazzling signage whilst negotiating Kijangs and Lexus’s and hundreds of school children with the other eye. (Don’t’ they know its Tuesday?)
The road seemed to go on long enough for me to think, have I missed it, but then there was the welcoming group of cars and fellow hashers collecting on the side of the road. Adrenalin of course is already pumping by now as the front runners head off, over a stick bridge and up. I headed the back side. Ha ha and did my best to walk and talk. There was a lot of up and a lot of steps.

Stairway to heaven was a song which comes to mind, with a few down bits to break it up, oh and a very large beetle. We had to stop and admire whilst catching our breath, which was then taken away by the view WOW so stunning.
Not only did we have fabulous views to admire but also an abundance of pitcher plants, to ooohh and aaarh over, what a treat.

As we continued on our merry way, sweating and puffing, plantings of passion fruit in the jungle gave us more to wonder and talk about. A few hens had turned back somewhere about here as we still had a long way to go, but there was so much more to see. On on

First check came and went, apparently with slight confusion, back on paper and more fantastic views over the Brunei River and Kampong with butterflies and swallows to complete the scene. Apparently we were on a lollypop with some going one way and some doing the other, but all met up on the stick but, I guess.
Heading down now and just amazed at all the pitcher plants and even say baby ones, so cute!! Mosque call now fills the twilight air, as well as the smell of wild vanilla orchids and the promise of a good shout up at Dizzies, hurried the last hens out of the jungle and over the stick bridge.

Thank you hares for laying such an interesting run, the Kota Batu views and pitcher plants were really amazing and the hills are a good challenge for the old bods.
Sorry, I missed the shout up, but I am sure it all went down a treat. On on Tracey.

P.S. Thank you for the great chow from Ricky’s restaurant and the singing practice went on ……….

RUN NO. 2070

DATE: 22 April 2008
SITE: Diplo (ANZAC run)
HARES: Madmarg/Heather S/Linda G/Cath C
HENS: 41 CHICKS: 2

Well, last weeks run turned out to be a bit of a surprise for some people. In hindsight the first indication was when i passed Glamour and Veronica returning back to base having not been able to find first check. I should have realised that something was up then but at that point i was still trying to catch up with the front runners and my focus was on the first of far too many hills looming up infront of me. And there were many of them, slippery and steep; and streams too wide to jump with no bridge available. Three checks, both back and forward, but the back wasn't back enough for me to even hear the callers, even though i was passed at one stage by panting streaks of lightening. And... what a surprise to end up at Subok.

It should be noted that being last on such occasions has the huge advantage of not having to wait for all the walkie talkies who delay the return of the bus, (and that i was being a very conciencious back horn and not just slow!)

The onon looked like a fair without the rides. Scantilly clad women in various states of undress, shouting and laughter and music, ice cream vans selling fish and chips and girls shouting 'free t shits, come get one'.

At the shout up we had more fair ground antics, starting with two visitors and then an outstanding jewellery exhibition hosted by Veronica to celebrate 1000 runs, a truly glitzy occasion. More jewellery ensued with a gift from the Aussie Hi Com of entwined flags, Brunei and Australia, a symbol of the close International Hashing Bondage developed by some of us on our recent trip to Perth. The merriment continued to increase with the arrival of the latest Hash Group, soon to appear infront of Simon Cowal, our very own Tripple Severn Girls - "yes let's hear it for the 777" - with antics galore to relate from their recent trip to Mens Hash on the island of Moon, including singing and dancing a la Can Can. And after that there was no stopping some. Ghetto blaster at the ready Carol managed to be both conductor and sometime lead singer in yet another soon to be famous Hash Group, as yet unnamed, with a corageously wobbly rendition of a very well known Queen song, but i am damed if i recognised it. So keep practicing girls.

A big thanks to Hares for an excellent A - B run. Good fish and chips with coleslaw and Anzac biscuits from the ANZAC girls.

DATE: 14 April 2008

HARES: Jane W/Sarah H
FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Mad Marg

Shortly after arriving at the site and parking my car, the tent arrived. It was decided that it was impossible to drive the truck up the steep hill as cars were parked on the side of the hill so the tent was set up at the usual area.

Once the hens had recovered after walking up the steep slope to the starting point, the hens set off at 5.15pm lead by front horn Carol. It was the usual trail in, but then within a short distance we turned left and were heading down the side of the steep hill. First check was two thirds of the way down the hill and it didn't take to long before the check was found by Sarah C who called the on on paper. We continued to the bottom of the valley, crossed a small stream and headed along a nice trail that I hadn't been on, before heading down into the valley again, with the support of a rope from the top of the hill. We continued along the unfamiliar trail until we got onto a well defined path. At this stage it took me a few minutes to realize where we were, actually on the Subok Ridge, we had a few steps to climb first then we were on to a nice easy trail with great views!

In the distance I could see Nancy walking further along the ridge and I was hoping that our trail would soon turn right and down the hill otherwise we were in for a very long run. It did say in the words to bring a touch! As it turned out, Nancy had missed the turn off and was called back and was soon back on paper. At the bottom of the hill we headed to the right, crossed a steam and continued along a winding trail though the jungle, climbing over a few trees that had come down in a storm and as well as the occasional muddy patch. We climbed the hill joining the main trail again and followed this until we reached the ridge, turned right and re-joined the in trail and then it was a short trot down the hill and back to the hash site. We were out just before it got dark and I have no idea who found second or third checks.

It was still very warm by the time the shout up started. The shout up was orderly but Kathy Knell was named for the hashit for forgetting to sign out. Lucky for her she had left early to go home—but watch out Kathy for next week.

The main event for the evening was the official naming of Nellie. Apparently in Perth they kept asking her if she had a hash handle—to which she kept replying “not yet” - so hence she is to be known from this day forward as NOT YET TINA TURNER.

Thank you hares for a great run and for the nectar juice and samoosas.

RUN No. 2068

DATE: 8 April 2008
SITE: Lucky Gardens
HARES: Trailblazer/Cheryl/Alison T
Hens:41 Chicks: 3
Front Horn: Lee
Back Horn: Alison

The hens gathered at an old favorite site of Lucky Gardens –don’t think we’ve been here since the New Year. Thanks goes to the Hares for laying an ‘emergency run’. The hare line is still a bit thin, so if you can lay a run please sign up! As we were waiting for the horn to sound the tent arrived and promptly got stuck on the muddy verge to the site. A few strong hashers gave the truck a good shove to get it moving again.

As the horn sounded we were off - some a little faster than others. We skirted left around the edge of a small ‘lake’ and then 1st check was called. Hens wandered this way and that ‘checking’, ‘checking’ to no avail. Just as we thought we need to check further a field the ‘on back’ was called by Sue Johnson - an advantage to arriving late to the hash! With the pack turned around we set off again - up, up we went to the top of the ridge. Back horn informed me that if I could make it up this hill I’d be fine to go right round. I had planned to do a short hash as I was recovering from a chest infection but these words spurred me on to go right around. I am very glad I did as the run was superb, a bit of something for everyone. Stunning views greeted us as we reached the top of the hill and a small plantation of sago (so Heather informed me). The only distraction being the squeaky windmills - next time we’re up here maybe we should bring some WD40! No-one was sure what the windmills were for maybe for irrigation or to scare off the birds.

Along the ridge we all trooped until 2nd check was called again the hens were running around checking back and forth not sure which way to go. Eventually the on paper was called by Magic. Back down into the valley we went and crossed a small muddy stream. Tina I commented that it wouldn’t be a hash without going though water. Fortunately this was only a quick paddle and we were up again. The paths became easier and were on good terrain for the FRB’s. Just as hens were looking for the homeward straight 3rd check was found by Trisha and it was plain sailing on the out trail to the road and the hash site.

An entertaining on on with JM’s Sarah and Nellie. New guests were to be welcomed but they had already left to go to the Nature Society meeting. We welcomed 2 new members into the fold Boel and Julie. Birthday wishes were sung in true hash style to Never Wrong and Madam Sin. The Ladies hash representatives gave us a quick run down on the Interhash in Perth and encouraged all to register for the 2010 Interhash to be held in Kuching. Brunei was well represented in Perth and it was interesting to note that the average age on the interhash was 52, makes me a young whippersnapper then.

RUN NO. 2067

DATE: 1 APRIL 2008
SITE: Menteri Dam, Salambigar - Menteri Link
HARES: Sarong/Never Wrong
FRONT HORN: Anna S
BACK HORN: Trailblazer
HENS: 38 CHICKS: 1

We arrived at the site with hens parking along the highway having been warned that the boom gate would be down although no one knew at what time. As good hashers, all who had park beyond the boom gate moved their car in case they got shut in - hence no tent had been ordered as the truck may not have been able to go through.

As it was a new site, the horn sounded at 5.15 and we tracked along some barren land and was soon into the jungle. Once in pretty wide trails followed and we could see it would be great running for the FRBs. Not far in we met Pee Wee who was already heading back as she had tripped and hurt her hand. We went up and up and 1st check was found by Magic Roundabout, keen as mustard after World Interhash in Perth that had no jungle like Brunei.

Tango found 2nd check but turned back as she had seen trees with 2 balls hanging and was not sure if it was an apparition (was Greg in town?) She reckoned she had seen this twice and called it a day. However, Cannibal and Magic have since confirmed that they were no more than ant nests!

We were rewarded with a fantastic view at the top of the ridge and certainly worth a "Kodak moment". We saw the Menteri Golf Club and right across to Brunei Bay....... a sight not seen on the Ladies Hash.....

The sojourn to Perth had certainly sharpened Running Bare's skills in checking and she was rewarded by finding third check. The trails were well maintained (by the villagers, so we learned) and even had ropes along the sides of most inclines. Periodically there were signs with names and mobile numbers in case anyone needed assistance. And as we reached the top of the last hill a sign in malay gave encouragement and expressed that should you be tired, take a breather, have a rest before carrying on.

Shout up by JM Sarah B assisted by GM Ellin started orderly and Legally Blonde had a birthday card that sang given to her. Hashshit changed hands as Heather S's mobile rang during the shout up. Delicious curry puffs and a variety of dips were served up by the hares on a makeshift table and so the night went on. Thank you hares.

HARES:Trailblazer/Tina L FRONT HORN: Legolass (visiting from Hong Kong)
BACK HORN: Ah Struth

A small group of hens who were not lucky enough to be away on holidays gathered at the site on a clear night with no storm clouds brewing. As the hares had not given us any hints on the run we did not know what to expect.

We headed off across the road and into the jungle. We proceeded along through bracken fern and came to some muddy water to wade through to ensure that nobody ended up with clean shoes. We scrambled along through low hanging branches, one time when it is an advantage to be short or to be politically correct (vertically challenged.)  plenty of trips and some thorns.

First check was reached and found quickly but I cannot tell you who by then we turned left through more jungle. We head along for about 15 mins towards the road and just when I thought we heading back in again we were back at the site.

The hares gathered back and shared tales of their adventures in Perth.
The shout up was commenced and two first time guests were introduced Nicky who lived in Brunei for 3 years and never did a hash then Colleen a visitor from Canada.
Legolass who is visiting from Hong Kong and kindly volunteered to be front horn was given a down down. We look forward to seeing her again in May when she returns for the Nash Hash with other Hong Kong hashers. Hashing must be a very civilised there because she tells me if you get lost you simply catch a taxi back.
The Hares provided chicken salad and Easter eggs. Thank you hares.

Date: 18 Mar 2008
HARES: Tango/Amanda S & guest hare Peter Packer
SITE: Morley Movers
HENS: 30+ CHICKS: 4
FRONT HORN: Carol (with apprentice Lauren) BACK HORN: Madmarg (with a mission)

A pleasant evening was promised and the hens were all rearing to go with a motley array of green attire as we set off up the usual climb up towards the water tower to start the “St Patrick’s Day” run. The climb continued on and on and on (yes, the words did say “some climbing”) but the run had been worded as 45 minutes for FRBs and 1hr 15 for the walkie-talkies. We were told to look out for Shamrocks on the way.

Soon the familiar stream, and we had to get our feet wet. First check (back, was called) as we ducked down the valley aided by a rope. Back horn was worried about Pee Wee who had not been seen after running off checking. Back horn waited, called and honked for a while but Pee Wee was nowhere to be seen. A quick call to Smurf by Trailblazer soon confirmed Pee Wee was safe back by the site. Apparently while Pee Wee was checking, had cut the paper and found her way out with Smurf.

Lots of thorns around, thru pretty trails and the constant sound of waterfalls and flowing streams could be heard as we wound our way through. Second check was quickly found (by whom I do not know, and due to lack of time (as I am rushing to get this off to Words before taking off to Perth World Interhash) have not checked with the hens to see who found the checks. If I had left writing this till I got back on Monday evening, I am sure Ah Struth would have texted me a few times by then! Not taking the risk of trying to find an internet café while in Perth, I thought I had better do this early morning report.

Screeches could be heard ahead by a stream as Peter Packer(PP) was sighted. Few hens posed for photos, and as we had to make sure PP got home Sid relieved Madmarg for a while and slung PP over her shoulders. Discussions followed as to whether we could actually take a real person out thus, but concluded that it would be difficult. Alison and Cheryl were having a little rest as we came across them, but alas PP was no help looking under the weather and deflated probably still hung over from St Patricks Day celebrations.

We were soon out on the clearing after another climb up to the ridge. A good run – thank you hares and PP, and we were all out in the light and trotted off to Tango’s house for the on on.

Shout up was orderly, with Pee Wee and Amanda S awarded with pewter goblets for their 50 run achievements. Those finding Shamrocks were given gifts by the hares. JM Nellie was keen to give the hashit out and Hashit was given to Alice in wonderland and Trish for failing to sign out. Alice in Wonderland tried to plead her innocence as she was busy paying out money. (Advice – for any one, sign out first before anything else once you come out of the jungle: actually, was Alice in the jungle?) Trish, had signed off on Alison on the line below (maybe glasses are in order….. or would that be admitting age is catching up…. Ha ha. Blame in on your new job – too much computer work and looking at the screen day in and day out)

Delicious Vegetarian Irish Stew prepared by the hares was served with bread – thank you ladies., another enjoyable evening as the food was washed down with G & Ts. On on Trailblazer

FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Jane
HENS: 39 CHICKS: 4

It was a lovely evening for a hash – not too wet - not too hot – to coin the words of Goldilocks - it was just right!

With the horn blowing we all set off for a run on one of our more favourite sites. We were not to be disappointed as we headed up and down and up and down………and up and down ! To say the terrain was undulating would be an understatement. However we were to be rewarded with beautiful meandering trails and a lot of pretty streams to cross.
First check was found by Heather L who is an inspiration to us all as she managed to get to first check first and is with child [congratulations by the way! Look forward to seeing baby L on a run soon!]

Despite the heavy evenings rains we have been having it wasn’t too muddy on the trail although there were a few slippery bits and Dizzy did a good attempt at arse ski-ing at one point which I believe was worthy of at least a 9.8.

The run was going very smoothly and 2nd check was found by readymix. There were a few steep ledges in the bracken to negotiate and I shouted to Tina to warn her as she has a propensity for Hash Stunts. Thankfully she has improved on her Hashing Technique and a crisis was averted!

3rd check was found by our own Back Horn Jane – well done you – a Walkie Talkie finding a check – you go girl! Then some FRB’s overtook us and shouted that we needed to go faster as we were only half way through the run. We were nearly 50mins into the run - silence prevailed as someone reminded us that there had been no timings on the words! It was of course a Hash Rumour! We were out in 1hr 15 – just right!

The shout up was Hash Orderly and 3 first time guests were introduced. Jenny and Kerry from Downunder [to be noted - Kerry downed her liquid in one go – we have high expectations for you Kerry!] and Julie from France. A big Hash welcome to you all!
Tango nearly got Hash Shit for not informing her guest of Hash Protocol – but it turned out to be a dud ads can! Lucky! However Hash Shit was given to Dizzy and Nellie. Bini Hutan claimed her Hash Shit offence given by Nellie wasn’t valid as her new shoes had broken this week. Dizzy apparently got it for no other reason than being Dizzy and for foolishly admiring the Hash Shit bag! Having no extra clothes did not deter them as they bravely stripped off and took the Hash Shit! Well done girls!

Readymix celebrated her birthday – although she wasn’t sharing the exact age – but she looks well for being a year older whatever the age. She was presented with a lovely cake which we all enjoyed later.

As it was Diplo we all brought Dips and Dippers. What a great idea! What a feast – such lovely dips – could we have Hash Domestic Goddess section to the words to print the recipes we have enjoyed?
A lovely run – thank you ladies!!

DATE: 4 March 2008
HARES: Trish/Pee Wee/Carol
SITE: SUBOK 67
HENS: 33 CHICKS: 1
FRONT HORN: Tango
BACK HORN: Sarong

The sky threatened to open up although it had already bucketed down the previous evening and earlier in the day; however it stayed away for the rest of the evening.
I was running late, and after signing in and proceeded down towards a very wet in-trail. We were met by Bettina and Bini Hutan heading back “exclaiming that it was too wet and slippery.” Besides, I believe Bini Hutan had new shoes! (And got the hashit for it. Bettina also got it for telling so no one was spared. Trish was very quick to get rid of the hashit and gave both Bettina and Bini Hutan warm foot washes.)

We went thru some muddy tracks and watery holes, including smelly ones and once in the jungle were heading down some very slippery slip sliding slopes. First check caught everyone together and indeed was a side-way back check found by Sarong.
Pitcher plants dotted most of the way as we found ourselves thru more wet crossings and pretty waterfalls. 2nd check was found by Alison, although my detective work did not disclose the finder of 3rd check. The view of the skyline was fantastic and bits of Bandar Seri Begawan could be seen as we went along a ridge.

Running Bare was practicing some skills in making sure snakes and such like scattered as she approached with loud claps for the forthcoming World Interhash at Perth. Some thought they should be turning around as the promise of a short run was indicated but the run seemed to continue on, and on we soon suspected that it could be an A to B – this proved true as we got to the top of the ridge and a sign that said “way out or you could do the Tasek loop should you need a longer run”.
As we headed to the bottom of Bukit Salilah adjacent to The Sheraton Hotel, a debate was going on as to how the run was described as short. It was soon clear that it was a misinterpretation of “not a long run”. The run had indeed not been described as “short”. Although it was a small group, the hares that met us were pleased that most had gone round, and the bus that was to transfer the hens back to Subok 67 made two trips.

The shout up was very orderly and soon we were tucking into Soto (a local soup) with a topping choice of beef, chix or veggies. A pleasant change and many thanks to the hares for providing the chow. Trish celebrated her birthday with a cake and as usual the hard core hens carried on till late in the evening.

RUN NO. 2062

DATE: 26 FEB 2008
SITE: Diplo
HARES: Anna S/Diana S FRONT HORN: Pee Wee
BACK HORN: Trailblazer
HENS: 40 CHICKS: 1

Here we were again, at one of our very favourite hashing sites. JM Sarah was searching for horny volunteers. An extra incentive this week – NEW HORNS! Procured from a bike shop in the Philippines by Trailblazer, how exciting! Pee Wee had really done lasting damage the week previously so this was somehow inevitable. Magic took the front horn – and with her a protĂ©gĂ©e, and Trailblazer the back horn. So at 5.15, and a toot of the new horn, off we went.

Into the middle and down, despite the rain at the weekend, it wasn’t actually too slippery. We followed the trail along, crossing the stream, all very familiar, when the familiarity hit me like a wet fish. We were heading towards Indonesia Hill – the steepest and meanest hill at Diplo (not counting Markucing if you go up the back way). Up and up and up…………..and up and up and up…………..and up! As we should have known, a check was looming, just down the other side of the hill to the right. I rather stupidly checked ahead, knowing full well it would be on back, and found myself back at the bottom of the valley. Magic lost her protĂ©gĂ©e, who decided she would rather ‘just have a run’. Well it would be lovely if we could all just do that every week, but then there wouldn’t be a Hash would there? And actually, front horn often has a hell of a lot of running to do – especially catching up after making sure paper is laid through on checks. AND you have the right to yell “Horn coming through” and the rest of the hens will scatter in your wake! So come on ladies, if you want a good run, have a go at front horn – there are many willing to instruct you in a bit of basic hash craft!

As I predicted, the check was on back. So up I trudged, thankfully Trailblazer had waited to call me through with the back horn. I don’t think I caught up in time to see second check, so well done to whoever found it! We were getting some good running in here. And I did manage to catch up by third check, which was again on back. However as the on paper was called, everyone followed the call and got to the paper, and left poor Legally Blonde holding the paper back on the check, unable to hear what was going on. I went back and called her through, or it would have been a long night for her! The rest of the hash was lovely, some good little inclines and great running trails, good for stretching the legs! One last killer of a rise up on out, and a quick trot across the sand and back to sign out.

The shout up commenced, (virgin) hares were down downed for a great run. No new members this week, and no real call for the Hashit. Everyone was behaving. Makan followed, provided by the hares. Best makan we have had for ages. A delectable selection of pates and dips and salad, alongside fresh baguettes. So good that several of us have felt inspired to try making them ourselves this week, just ask Madam Delia Sin. The night then continued into the usual camaraderie and conviviality, under the darkening skies…….On on!

RUN NO. 2061

DATE: 19 February 2008
SITE: Spg 102, Jalan Dadap
HARES: Readymix/Trailblazer
HENS: 40
FRONT HORN: Pee Wee
BACK HORN: Ah Struth
CELEBRATION: Readymix 300 runs

Arriving just in time, I headed off behind Carol, Running Bare in bright orange and Pee Wee who was today’s front horn.

After so many days of rain it was surprisingly dry as we started our run.
Initially I was a bit worried about the local dogs barking and running after us.
This we soon forgot after taking in the spectacular views!

I was excited as I had never ran in this area before!
10 minutes in to the run Carol says; “probably a check coming up”, and there it was!
Early I thought, but Pee Wee found it quickly and we moved in, through the scratchy bracken.

Running Bare was dressed in her VERY orange shorts and wished she had worn something LONGER!

The scenery was fantastic and we felt like explorers.

Magic and Tia Maria were on the ball and found 2nd check!

After a lot of up & down, up & down and more up up & down I realised that this was a proper hash, this is what it’s all about!

At this point we WERE mountaineers.

Pee Wee was on top form and found 3rd check but then her horn broke, knob fell off…………………

Pee Wee was very upset!

The last bit was just beautiful, great running and then a water fall to top it off!

We came out after 45 minutes and headed to Ready Mix for the shout up.

We were all wearing red and gold with a few variations, all for the special celebration of Chinese New Year!

The hares were celebrated for their Very challenging run and we heard fireworks in the back ground.

Hash shit was wanted to be given to Trish for driving the wrong way but as Tango had all the necessities it was not handed out this evening.

Ready Mix’s food came from the Chinese hashers and it was delicious.

Cocktails were served by the very charming Wilhelmina from Down under and Tiffany from Thailand.

The drama of the evening was grief given by drivers complaining over our parking!! How dare they?

Thank you hares for my best run yet and for a delicious spread!! Anna

RUN NO. 2060

DATE: 12 FEBRUARY 2008
SITE: Spg 791 Jln Muara, Tanah Jambu (Morley Movers)
HARES: Gordon/Smurf/Madam Sin
FRONT HORN: Carol
BACK HORN: Naj
HENS: 44 CHICKS: 1
NEW MEMBERS: TANIA C/MARIA T

It was a cool evening after several days and the whole morning’s rain, a wet run was possible but as the afternoon fined up, a great run set by our most experienced hares with an accumulated total of 1100 runs, became a reality.

I was running late due to some traffic jam on Jalan Muara and after signing in headed up the hill towards the water tower on the usual in at 5.30pm.
Bettina and I noticed some stray paper at the fork of a trail and concluded that must have been first check laid back – apparently found by Alison and Cheryl. We then headed down towards the stream and thru lots of trips and the usual thorny trails we wound our way around. We were pleased to soon catch up with the rest of the runners.

2nd check, back again was called, and found by Alison and Naj (self confessed “Nag”). The waterfalls and gentle cascades were both soothing to the ears and our heels as the day was indeed becoming increasingly hot and balmy.
Magic Roundabout did not miss a trick this time and found 3rd check. Apparently there was a 4th but whether it was found or by whom I did not manage to find out. However, we were soon out – yours truly in half an hour and I guess for the rest of the pack within 45 minutes from the start. We were all out before it got dark.
We quickly changed and a photo shoot with our Founders Day gear ensued as we milled around and socialized while Smurf raced into the distance to the beach to collect our fish and chips tea.

The shout up progressed with the usual order and two new members welcomed. The hares were congratulated for their run achievements. As we were in the middle of Chinese New Year celebrations, crackers and fireworks could be heard in the distance and some even sounded really close. Alas, when hashit was thrown at Naj for parking her car in a way blocking public access, our own fireworks went on display! After an exchange of choice speeches, screeches from tyres and the driver with honking of the horn saw a car leaving the site and disappearing into the distance….. never to return? The hens thought they were attending a children’s matinee!

With the drama over for the evening, and the announcement of more Chinese New Year celebrations for the following week with the run at Jalan Dadap and the on on at GM Readymix. The theme was to be gold and red in line with the celebrations. May be we will see more fireworks then!

Thank you hares for a great run and good chow! On on. Trailblazer

FRONT HORN: Pee Wee
BACK HORN: Alice in Wonderland

In the hours before sunset the adventure began. Tango, while attempting a particularly tricky short cutting manoeuvre managed to lodge her 4WD over a deep drain. Nothing shifts a jeep with one wheel hanging over a chasm, but not to worry, from a neighbouring simpang Cannibal ‘flew’ in to the rescue with a strong jack and a piece of wood. It’s amazing how many new skills he has perfected while waiting for his plane to arrive! In a flash of highly tuned skill, order was restored. Thank you.

The hens clucked in happiness and soon Pee Wee led us down from Bini Hutan’s garden into the jungle. Already we, (Madam Sin, Jan M and I) were at the back and contemplating THAT big hill. But no, the trail turned right and down following the old riverbed. We took a quick detour to see the moonscape below and were shocked to see the destruction and demolition of so many pretty runs! And to what purpose, I ask? Back to the trail, over a lovely old bridge and out onto a new construction road. We could see the paper going right into the jungle, and we could hear hens everywhere. Soon we could see them milling about everywhere too. A few headed off checking afar, especially up a particularly nasty hill. Jane, as it turned out, was oh so close, but…… the on was called and down they all came. Alas! Magic had got it wrong and picked up the very trail she had come in on!! She headed home! The rest, clucked and fussed until Captainess Sparrow, looking up to the ridge said, “Ahoy my hearties!! I know that there tree!!” so off they all puffed, back from where Jane so cruelly came. The run was ‘on’ again.

I must confess that the rest is conjecture as we headed back for the beer! Rumour had it that the trail wound up and down past trees and stuff, out and across another road, down into the ‘hutan’ again, down a precipice – how did they do that? Abseiling of course!! And then confusion as paper had been moved. However, help was at hand. This time Juergen came to the rescue and all was well. Everyone soon followed Tango out as she arrived out with third check in her arms!! What some people do to assure themselves of hashit!

Nellie led an instructive shout up – leaving people clear about the whys and wherefores of the hash. Hares were thanked for delicious makan. Pee Wee and Tis Alice for the horns, and Jessica, on becoming a new member, showed us how to down down. Hashit was awarded to Tango as a reward for all her hard work, and Madam Sin for allowing her SMS to buzz!! From there on the night grew fuzzy, not with warm feely things, but due to ice cold wet ones!

1. Tango would pass her driving test. TRUE/FALSE
2. Magic would pass her navigation test at the Brownies. TRUE/FALSE
3. Jane was ‘robbed’ of first check glory. TRUE/FALSE
4. There were ‘men’ on the hash. TRUE/FALSE

RUN NO. 2058

DATE: 29 JANUARY 2008
SITE: Rimba
HARES: Miss Espania, Naj and A’Struth
FRONT HORN: Heather S
BACK HORN: Trailblazer

It was a clear day, no sign of rain, unlike 3 weeks ago, when the whole Rimba area got flooded and we were confined to Naj’s car park.

Getting to the hash was already a story on its own. I tried to leave early from work, just to get stuck at one of the traffic lights in Gadong for over 5 minutes. Finally getting onto the highway, I got stuck in a traffic jam. Wondering what it was all about, only saw some glass on the street and 4 cars parked nearby, but of course everyone had to stop and looook!!!!!!

When I finally arrived at the site, I saw everyone heading off into the jungle.

After rushing to sign in, I started off following yellow paper. Along the road it went, nearly missing the turn into the jungle. As it was fairly good running trails, I was able to join the other hens at first check. Lucky for me it was a back - check found by trailblazer - actually I think it was Alison and Cheryl. (At least I saw her heading off in that direction). So, from being one of the last ones to arrive, I saw myself in the front, but of course not for long.

Further we went through different vegetation, some areas with ferns, some with shrubs, some looking almost like European woods, a few ups and down, but not too strenuous. Second check was a back - check again, not sure, who found it!? Thereafter I lost track of any other checks. I still remember plenty of trips on the trail, some thorns (not too many), some logs and trees blocking the path. We came out after appr. 50 minutes, having had a good workout.

It took a while until everybody was ready for the shout-up; also it was getting quite dark. The hares would get the usual down-down. We had one new guest, Charlotte, who had to leave early. Hopefully she will return next week.

As it was Carol’s Birthday, there was a lot of singing and chanting and finally the “Birthday Song”.

Next we had sad news, Miss Espania, is leaving us. She will stay on in Brunei, but has decided to stop hashing for a while.

No hashit was awarded tonite. Thanks to the hares for the delicious samosas and Mandarin Oranges.

RUN 2057

DATE: 22 Jan 2008
SITE: Upper Diplo HENS: 40 Guests: 2
HARES: Alison/Sue/Cheryl
FRONT HORN: Ready Mix
BACK HORN: Sarah C

Well after playing 18 holes of golf that morning I was pooped so decided I would only walk and take it easy today. Arriving at the site I noticed that the numbers were down and was wondered if it was because of the earlier downpour—not that we had it at Rimba. Personally I love hashing after rain as the jungle is always fresh and smells sweet and the streams are flowing and as well, Diplo is my favourite hash spot.

We set off up the hill this time (which is usually the way we come out) and the trail followed a scenic ridge with glimpses of a distant view. The first check was called right down in the valley. Hmmm! I was sure the “on paper” would continue down the hill as continuing along the same path would take us too far from Diplo itself (that is if we were to come out at the usual place). I committed myself and took the plunge (and unfortunately gave others the benefit of my limited experience and encouraged them to follow). We slid down the hill swinging off trees only to find Carol with a clump of wet check paper in her hand going back up the hill to compare pieces of the check paper with some possible “on paper” she had found. Sure enough Carol started calling ‘ON ON paper” and back up the hill I staggered—feeling embarrassed about the wrong advice I had so willingly given.

We kept going on and on along the ridge and I thought this is a little strange. When are we going to turn back again towards Diplo? I was walking with Madmarg and Debbie and Madmarg soon confessed that she had heard a whisper that it was an A to B. What a treat!. We plodded on but got further behind so I have no idea who found the next checks but was mesmerized by the beautiful jungle and the glimpses of the view. Madmarg said we would join up with her run from the previous week and I started recognizing parts of that run. The mist kept rolling in and out and whilst I likened it to going to heaven Mad Marg suggested it was like the movie “Gorillas in the Mist” and suggested we may find a gorilla around the next corner. Eventually we came out at the Subok water tower (spg 378) and as we were the last 3 out of the jungle the bus had left but we were greeted by the welcome sight of a 4 wheel drive vehicle driven by Alison with Sue beside her. On arriving back at the shout up site I noted that this was the first time I had hashed at Diplo and kept my feet dry.

Back at the sight there were murmurings that no one could read the words as the print was too small. I agreed and made a mental note to fix in future.
The main event of the night was that Alison was celebrating her 800 runs. WOW!!! CONGRATULATIONS ALISON, WELL DONE! You were obviously a “whipper snapper’ when you first came to Brunei.

The shout up went off well this week and in what seemed a little rehearsed the hashit was given to 3 willing members. It was finally settled on Sarah Hill for licking food off her copy of the hash words—I think!.
We were then treated to some delicious soup and some tiny chocolate muffins—great stuff thank you ladies.

RUN 2056

Date: 15 Jan 2008
Hares : Madmarg/Linda
Site: Subok 378
Front Horn : Pee Wee
Back Horn: Naj

Well, this week’s run certainly started on a better note than the last! Not a rain cloud in sight and already 4.30pm Tuesday afternoon and it found me hot footing it out of RIPAS Hospital car park only to draw to a snail’s pace by the general mayhem of zillions of workers all trying to get home at exactly the same time down one very narrow exit road… oh the joys of driving in Brunei.

Not to worry its Tuesday, it’s hash nite, it’s gossip catch up nite and once it’s over the week seems to miraculously go quicker!! Don’t ask me to explain it; it’s just a miracle of life!!

The hens collected on this fine Tuesday afternoon at the bottom of the hated water tower hill so it was going to be up, up and in at the start for definite but what else did the run hold for us, leave it to luck, read the words or ask about. I decided to check out the words which sounded pretty positive until Ah Struth decided to fill us in with what she’d heard from the hare. We should be thankful for these little snippets of info but sometimes its better not knowing and today was one of those times. Madmarg says “Short but horrendous!!” Ah Struth tells us Oh dear and to think today I have no choice but to go round… I have to write the words unfortunately. Could I pass this responsibility to a co-hare? Which promptly reminded me where the hell are my 2 friends when I need them? One severe headache was keeping one away but what about the other, thank the whatever as with a few minutes to spare I spotted Sue’s jeep pull into the site.

5.15 and the hens at different rates of progress attacked the up of the water tower hill could this be the hill mentioned on the words and the rest of the run is downhill?? Could I be being very optimistic, several hens decided I was being far too optimistic and probably a bit unbalanced it was probable the altitude getting to me. Front Horn and the front runners lead us all the way up to the start of the grassy bank and on into the jungle apparently having been proceeded by back horn, is this the correct way of the hash? Was someone going to get the hashit? We all had to wait and see!!

The run led on along the familiar ridge trail bearing left down a slight incline and then sharply banking down to the right of the ridge at a fern bank. We believe now that this is where front horn Pee Wee Claire and Tango Mandy S went wrong with the call of CHECKING being heard, instead they sprinted for out… no not on Subok but at Diplo well done ladies for running your own version of the run. The rest of us although I believe we lost back horn as well at some stage of the run so the rest of the hens minus horns carried on in true tradition to find the on paper which was neatly found by Sarah as the call went up ON BACK we traversed the ridge to drop down very steeply to the left.

It was down, down and more down for several minutes as we all negotiated the tangle of roots, trips and slippery surfaces on our way down to the tranquility of a valley not often seen. We then slipped and struggled our way along the banks of the rivers/streams to a point of crossing and the call for 2nd check. Most of the hens were over the stream searching forward so off I went on back up calling checking in a hope I could be right especially considering the hare’s message from the words of one hill up and one hill down maybe this was going to be the uphill and out. Low and behold I was right. After calling the hens back to paper the hill, and what a hill it was, was vanquished by all as we reappeared on the ridge just leaving a gentle stroll out to the water tower again and the eskies.

A lovely, enjoyable, short but still challenging run well done to the hares, one of whom we found out later was a virgin hare well done Linda.

The two lost souls were picked up from diplo, by a kind chariot I think driven by Carol, I did think having rides from chariots was hashitable but someone smiled on the two poor souls as the hashit was widely spread around the hens during the shout up but never came to lie upon them. The shout up proceeded and had a few high and low points if you want details you just should have been there. 3 guests were introduced sorry I can't remember all their names although I do remember 2 were JIS teachers (1 of whom is called Jill I know that because she's my son's teacher) and one a parent of kids at JIS married to a loan service guy, see I was paying some attention to the shout up and not just dobbing people in it for the hashit, Tina was introduced as a new member, great to see new faces, lets hope they all come back.
The hashit having been with several people was finally awarded or was it accepted by Sarah (JM) and Smurf well taken ladies in the true spirit of the hash.

The shout up was followed by the delicious food kindly supplied by the hares thanks again ladies while the food was chewed over so were many discussions on the pros and cons of the new ideas introduced by the new mismanagement, comments are always listened to keep them coming, at least they stirred the hash up!!
